Replying to original topic and not the insane assylum that this has become...
Mainstream media has made being gothic "cool". It's pushed so much into kid's heads that they have to be unique, but they see different as unique, and so latch on to the first different thing they see - ie, goth.
Now, at my high school, you have two subdivisions of this: The Punks and the Goths. Punks are usually the violent side of it. They're more apt to self mutilate (though usually out of pure stupidity), have a higher ratio of switchblades-to-people, and go off and get high in the corners. Goths are the quiet, sensitive side. A lot of goths are anti-war, tree-huggers, and free-lovers. The general school population has a far better opinion of the Goths than the Punks. But that doesn't mean the Punks are all bad. I know a few Punks who are the sweetest people in the world, would give you their right arm if you asked it. And, too, I know a few Goths who wouldn't be caught dead with a norm.
We hardly have any posers. Maybe because the Goths and Punks are limited to the White population at our school, and the school itself is 75% Asian. Most of the Asians are first or second generation, and their parents simply would not tolerate so quick and radical an Americanization. Out of 3,500 students, there are maybe 40 Goths/Punks at the most, and I probably know every single one.
Well, there's my two cents.

hmmm, that's strange, at my school it was the exact opposite. the punks were the relatively nice ones and the goths were kind of scary (though i made friends with many on both sides ^_^ ). _________________

I have a rather dim view on goths. From what I've observed, they're pretty depressing people who are afraid of death. Its pretty funny because despite that, they smoke, drink, and have unprotected sex. |

According to my friend, the defenition of 'punk' used to be something like 'not trying to fit in any stereotype'
What happened to that?
And according to the same friend I am a goth-punk hybrid-thingie. O.o |

Please, forgive me if I am wrong kids, but goth is based on:
-Music (Not you sh*tty Manson, Slipnot, Korn crap...no.)
-Fashion (Not Hot Topic...HT is not goth kiddos.)
-Art/Books
That's about it. It's NOT about cutting yourself, or being depressed and unhappy. It's the kind of things you prefer to others.
NOW! The freak kids that are running around today at our school's and malls are call "Sp00ky Children". They don't know what they are doing, they just are asking mommy for $120 to buy a new outfit at Hot Topic so they can look core at school or some s**t. These are the kids a mock.
We don't cut, act sad, gloomy, not smile, or anyother spooky kid crap like that, Goth is a subculture. Get over it.
Take that byichhess. yea. |

As far as I know, there's no universal definition of "gothic." Just a dumb ambiguous label they give themselves.
Oh, this guy has it nailed right on the head:
What is this Gothic you speak of? |

I think HerFrozenVeins said it best. The goth friends I have arn't depressed psycos, don't cut themselves, ect...
It is a lifestyle choice, thats about it.
As for Hot Topic, I will be the first to admit that I like a lot of their T-shirts (the humorous ones, to be specific), but that store was an attempt to cash in on the rising goth "fad" by supplying clothing and whatnot that seemed to fit into the stereotype. It can get on my nerves. Too many people trying too hard. <_<

If you have to say you're goth (to yourself or to others), you're not. No, there's no definite criteria because it's impossible to come up with one. It has nothing to do with how you look, what music you like, or what movies you go see. Yes there are common trends, so you could say "a lot of goths like ____", but you could be "goth" wearing baby pink, pigtails, and listening to Britney Spears. It doesn't matter. There are certain things that tied the subculture together in the 80s, but it wasn't based on the fashion and music so to speak. It just so happened that people shared common interests.
It's really sad people define what was a great little subculture by the current trend. It wasn't about having a cool label or making yourself feel better by being "different". It was people with similar beliefs and interests getting together and enjoying themselves. Hate on the trendwhores in their Hot Topic fishnets and angsty poetry all you want, I don't like them either, but the subculture the style is based on was really great.
Gothic is a style of architecture and a trendwhore label. Anyone from the original subculture could care less about it. God this thread is tedious. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

FallenAngel, Please, go speak to an elder goff, and get their actually thoughts on what you just wrote. You didn't grow up in the 80's so quit acting like you did. Do that, and rewrite what you wrote. (Though I agree with some of the statements you worte...this thread is the pants. ) <3 |

Thank you for pretending to know me and know who I associate with, but you obviously missed my point. My point was that you don't see people from the gothic subculture running around going "I'm so goth! Isn't it cool?!". Do you disagree that the gothic subculture was people with similar interests and beliefs coming together? Or did you disagree with what I said about it not being about how you look, what you listen to, etc? Because I was simplifying that point, but it is quite true that if someone shares the beliefs and interests, walking around in a pink dress would not make them any less gothic.
So please, before you act all high and mighty, be sure you know what I'm saying and don't act like an utter prick. Assumptions aren't very nice, honey.
oh, and go fuck yourself. I almost liked you.
EDIT: And I'm not pretending anything, pookie. I was born in 1987. I'm 17 years old. Never claimed to be anything else. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Ok, ya know what? Everyone's said their piece, and this thread should have ended 10 pages ago. Trendwhores suck, goth isn't hot topic, and some people here have an enormous stick up their ass. That's it. End of subject.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm leaving to go see Poison and don't want to see anymore shit like this when I get back. (LIKE OMFG!!!!111 THAT IS TEH 80s!!!! STOP PRITENDING 2 LYKE THEM!!!!!1111one) Grow up, dumbfucks. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |
