The formula is (1/2)^x*y, meaning, you can be 1/4, 1/8, 3/8, 11/16 of something, but never 1/6. for you to have 1/6 of something, you must have a parent with 1/3 of blood, right? 1/3 never happens either, unless you're into really scary threesome of something.

Then what about the variable of a child getting more from one parent than the other?

Twit. You get half your genetic material from one parent and half from another. It's called fertilization.

If it didn't happen that way then you're either dead, retarded, sterile, or in some other way, defective. Maybe you are.

Sounds like someone didn't take their pills today. It's not like you'll get an exactly equal half dad, half mom DNA strand with dominant and recessive genes and all. Fertilization is when a sperm enters the egg.

You get half your chromosomes from your father, half from your mother, mitochondrial DNA from your mother.

Dominance is totally irrelevant to this conversation. If somehow every single one of your father's genes were dominant to your mother's, would you say that you got [i]nothing[/i] from your mom? You have it, it just doesn't show.

Well you were a little vague when you said genetic material. You could've meant chromosomes or genotypes for they deal with genetic material.

Chromosomes are genetic material. Genotypes are not made of genetic "material;" you cannot [i]look[/i] at a genotype under a microscope or build one from nucleotides. It's not "material."

I still don't understand why [i]you[/i] didn't understand. Even if I [i]was[/i] talking about genotypes and not actual DNA, how does that make you any less wrong?

For the record, I said they deal with genetic material. I never said genotypes were genetic material.

Anyways, I got my fraction of 1/6 from converting it from a percentage. Unless you have a better way of compiling two parents' ancestral origins and putting them together. I've always gone by percentage compared to the 1/2 deal after having converted the percentage into a fraction.

Also, which part are you misunderstanding? Being more specific of where you aren't understanding something would help on where to explain. Do you mean all together or a certain point in this conversation?
