I was watching "Akira" recently, and every time someone yelled out Kaenada's(sp?) name, I would be like "what? what about Canada?!?" . In the English dub, they changed the vowel sounds slightly, so it wasn't as confusing...
Laughing That's hilarious.

I hate name changes, but I really don't think there's a reason to change the spelling of a name. I'm saying this because I once saw Kougaiji's name spelled Kogaiji, and Kouga spelled Koga. That looks so stupid.

And this may sound stupid, but why do some characters have names that are the names of cars? Honda? Ferio? Jeep? Subaru? What?

I like to obsess over stuff. Here are all the things I'm obsessing over:

Anime: D.Gray Man
Anime character(s): Kanda
Video Game: Super Smash Brothers Brawl
Video Game character: Wolf O-Donnell from Star Fox Assault
OC: Ray Eclrida, copyright of me (duh!)

In Beyblade they screw up alot of stuff.

Takao became Tyson, have you ever met a Japanese person named Tyson?
Kai stayed the same, which is good.
Ray went from Rei, to Ray, not to bad.
But Max....my gawd, his name got so screwed up...

In certain animes though, like Fruits Basket and DNAngel, the names stayed the same which is good. It really does probably have to do with the little kiddies though. But, little kids are getting ecposed to more stuff lately, so I doubt that they'd need to change the names.
Take Dora the Explorer for an example, is supposed to be Spanish, but what if a little 5 year old can't pronounce Dora or Diego,"Oh no, we can't change it, its SUPPOSED to be Spanish!" but what about Japanese names? "Oh, we've gotta change those, who cares if it's supposed to be Japanese!?"

I really dislikes it when they change the names.

Of course there's Yu-Gi-Oh!, but I also dislikes how they changed the names in Digimon >_> They changed pretty much every name in every series, except maybe 4 or 5. And they left out the 'u' in Kouji and Kouichi >< It's annoying when you talk to somebody about the anime when the names are changed, too, because sometimes the other person doesn't know about the name changes.

The u doesn't add a sound in Japanese. Taking it out just makes it easier for English people to write.

The only way it is acceptable is if
it is like Spain or something. They can't pronounce japanese names.

I think most name changes are probably the fault of 4kids, they have such low standards for American kids. Like in One Piece, Zoro was changed to Zolo. It may have been pop culture issues, I'm no sure. (As far as I know, the rest of the names weren't as tampered with)

Tokyo Mew Mew. I know it's meant to be for younger viewers, but they seriously butchered the names! Ichigo becomes Zoey, above all things! Dude, they should just leave the names as they are and get the voice actors, or whatever to just practise in pronouncing them clearly, that's all... I steer clear of TMM dub, as I saw it briefly a couple of times on Pop Girl- brr... never again. Me like the original version- as can be seen on www.veoh.com

They will often drop the u after an o in a name because the pronunciation difference is fairly subtle to a western audience and it makes it less confusing to spell/pronounce. Same thing with Chii becoming Chi.

They did the same thing with Touya => Toya in the licensed sub of CCS.

Even Tokyo is technically spelled toukyou if you translate the characters directly.
