Probably the new manhunt2 that they had to censor to release.

Silent Hill is supposed to be pretty frightening too.

How about the most genuinely frightening moments, from games that don't set out to [i]be[/i] frightening?

In that case I think of two, three moments from Super Metroid on the SNES. The first boss you fight in Norfair, the one where you have to keep shooting and back him into the acid-lava pit... it dissolves him right down to a skeleton with you watching. But the scary part was when you finally start exploring the room, and then the SAME monster just busts right through the spiked wall on the other side...

.
...And then his pile of empty bones completely collapses into dust right in front of you, and NOW the battle is over. Given, it's only a two or three second shock, but it's one hell of a shock the first time.

There's also the fight against that Chozo statue, the first time you see that thing catch one of your super missiles and throw it [i]back[/i] at you....

There's also the final battle against Ridley deep down in Norfair. Great battle for the Metroid annals, you defeat him, open the door to claim your prize, and all you find is a broken containment jar which used to house that cute little baby Metroid ... you don't have to be told what this means, you automatically [b]know[/b] what.

Which leads up to that moment in Tourian where after fighting your way past gigantic Hoppers (which require five [i]super missiles[/i] apiece to take down!), you run into this quiet room where all the monsters have been sucked dry and their empty husks crumble at the slightest touch, including one or two of those giant Hoppers... the coup de grace being when that "baby" Metroid barges in and sucks another one of those Hoppers dry right in front of you, right before it attacks you (and you simply can't shake it off).

Of course, everyone knows that you survive the encounter, but it's still one heck of a shock.

Silent Hill 4 is pretty scary, it gets pretty intense also.

But the scariest game of all time (with more scary MOMENTS than any other game, aswell) is Resident Evil 3. The 8 foot monster with the bazooka that jumps out and chases you at random times throughout the entire game = most frightening game ever.

That game was in no way frightening. I played through it and felt bored, I played through silent hill 2 and I spent the rest of the night jumping at small sounds my house makes and slashing the air with my sword.

I avoid scary games- like horror games, as well... they scare me. I don't like horror type things like games and films, either, so... Well, if you must. I did play a demo of Silent Hill 4 and that was creepy. The effects alone were enough to scare me a bit.

I would say it would be good ol' Resident Evil 1. Silent Hill 3 is pretty close behind.

Especially my sims had a baby girl who had a face of an old woman, upside-down.
