Whenever I go to the local shop and look through games, 99% of the time I walk away empty-handed either because I'm not looking for a game at the time, or they don't have what I'm looking for. I have begun using nicknames to refer to their prices:
$50 - Premiere
$40 - Standard
$30 - Reduced
$20 - Classic
$10 - Bargain Bin
But anyway, we all know there are good games out there. But what are the best? What games delivered the most bang for the proverbial buck? For this thread, list the best games that you purchased for $20 or less. (This includes any game in the "Greatest Hits" [GH] categories, but only if you bought the GH version of it -- no listing any games that you bought before they became GH's)
I'll post my own list of favorite bargain games, that is, once I get my list assembled. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Hmm...let's see here...I bought a Xena game from Target for $3. It's actually a pretty good game exept for the sound turning off whenever it feels like it. <_< _________________ a jelly calypso castle in the sky |

Okay. Time for some of my selections:
Final Fantasy 7 / 9 (PSX, Greatest Hits, $15) -- Let's be honest, RPG's usually have the highest time/buck ratio. FF7 is considered the best but FF9 is pretty great too, music and graphicswise. My favorite tune from FF9 has to be the airship tune for when you're flying Hilda Garde 3.
Sly Cooper (PS2, Greatest Hits, $20) -- I had hardly even heard of this game when it came out. In fact, the only reason I started looking for it was because of a good reference from Ratchet & Clank 2 (the title screen of R&C2 shows Ratchet playing various video games, including Sly Cooper). For buying a game without a real sense on what it was, Sly didn't disappoint. At least as appearances go, he's one of my new favorites. Too bad the game's short though.
Spyro 2: Season of Flame (GBA, $13) -- I'm a Spyro fan. But Enter the Dragonfly for PS2 was a disaster. Hellatiously long loading sequences (50+ seconds) plus some annoying bugs, so when I saw and got the GBA Spyro games, my expectations were pretty low. The music is excellent, and the gameplay is very faithful to Spyro's higher-console origins. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Any of the Delta Force games. Even though they are kind of old, they are really fun and display modern army warfare very realistically, from bullets wizzing over your head and pounding the earth around you, to one hit kills for you and the enemy soldiers. _________________

I must agree with VR(Will) The Delta Force games are really good. I really like the game Caesar 3 ($10.00) at best buy. It was a really good city building game, but I still think Rise of Nations is better.
P.S. I also think that the Delta Force Games are realistic because I mean, some of the civilians run and some of them throw rocks at you. It's actually kinda funny. |

Ah, the "how low have you dug into that bin?" question.
Red Baron (Sierra '90, $10) Best flight sim. Ever. You could fly a startling array of aircraft, go on Zeppelin hunts, and fight aces like Ball and Richtoffen. And the flight dynamics were pretty good for such an old game.
Wolf (Sanctuary Woods '95, $20) A role playing game where you are a wolf. Sounds kind of boring, but once you've gone on a hunt, found a mate, had pups, it's all good. The wolves were based off real wolves at the wolf preserve. Hambone, Quiettrot, Luna, Eclipse... There were over 20 wolves to choose from, male and female, three enviorments and a randomly generated world that could span days of walking. A very good game.
All I can think of for now.

Let's see, good cheap games i've gotten.......
American McGee's Alice, $10 at wal*mart with Clive Barker's Undying bundled with it. This is an AMAZINGLY fun game. Its a platformer based on the quake3 engine, and it has a very nice feel to it, and good gameplay. The BEST cheap gave i ever bought.
Shogo: Mobile Armor Division/Septerra Core, also $10 at some mall in jersey. I bought this to play on my dad's laptop while we were visiting my cousin. I haven't played Septerra Core yet, but Shogo was really fun. It has two modes of play, in your mech, and on foot. I like how when youre on foot you die fairly easily. A few shots (or one good one) and you're dead.
Sanitarium, $7 at target. An old win 9x point and click adventure game where you play as some guy who has lost his memory and wakes up in this creepy old building that's been turned into a sanitarium. For the most part its fairly easy, and most people seem to hate point and click adventure games, but I grew up on king's quest games borrowed from the library, so I like it.
that's all the non used games i can think of right now....... there are probably more though. |
