Every now and then I get an e-mail saying that one of my drawings was rejected by the approval panel. Usually it's because of the image being too wide (so now, I double-check the images before uploading, just in case). But the latest one stumped me.
"Reason: Too generic"
Does this refer to the drawing's title or something?
Looks like I'll have to think up a better title for it (many of my drawings were untitled) . . . . _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

It might have been the category. I don't think I've approved/rejected anything of yours personally but for the most part everything posted in the general Anime/Manga section will be rejected. Also if you submit a picture for a specific category and that category has seperate character galleries, you might have been rejected if you didn't properly catergorize it into the right character gallery.
I hope that helped a bit. Sorry if it didn't ^^;; _________________

I'm not complaining about the drawing being rejected. My complaint is more about the reason stated in the e-mail . . . in most of the image-rejected messages I've seen so far, the reason given is a specific one, it tells you exactly what is wrong and more importantly includes a recommendation on how to fix it. Like the "Image too large: please resize to under 600 pixels in width". Or "Wrong category: Should be under _____ / _____".
So to see a message of "Reason: Too generic", this neither told me exactly what was wrong (category? title? drawing?), nor did it give a recommendation on what to do; the message was itself too generic for me to figure out what I should be doing about it.
It was a dragon drawing, the title was "Dragon Pair" (tentative at best, I have a hard time thinking up titles) and I'm pretty sure I categorized it under "Fantasy/Dragons" where it would belong.
Oh well, I'll try that one again tomorrow. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Believe me most of the times the mods don't even know why they do things.
So how could they tell you something they don't even know themselves. |

No offense, Sirius, but I think I'll choose to not believe you right now
To date I've uploaded almost fifty pictures, and have received rejection notices only about five times (IMHO, a good average). Three because of size, one because of category, and now this 'generic' one.
The group nature of the approval panel produces some strange quirks. One day I uploaded three drawings out of a series, two made it past the approval panel, but the third one was rejected because whomever handled it thought it was in the wrong category. I've seen one of my drawings make it through at about 640 pixels wide, and another one get rejected for being 610 pixels wide. Moments like that make me go  and
But that's a different subject, and none of them were/are a major annoyance, except maybe for the 'generic' message. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Its not practical to have a single person sit at a computer 24/7 approving piccies consistantly.
As for the error, I think its a category one, but Fantasy/Dragons should be a reasonable place for it so I dont know....Try again. _________________ You will obey or molten silver will be poured into your ears. |

I was pretty sure I had chosen Fantasy/Dragons for the category, but obviously I can't go back and check on it....
The error message still stumps me because it isn't specific enough. But hey, I tried again last night (about 2am) and had no problems This is it:

To add a new chapter to an existing story, go to your FAC profile page ( fanart-central.net/user.php?aid=________ ) and you'll see an "Edit" button next to your pics and stories. Use them. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Believe it or not I think that is normal. Sure it's annoying (denis?), but open a new window and check your story, the new chapter should appear there. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

T.T ..........
Ah....ha.. I think it's more of there's a lot of pictures and while THEY may know what they mean, the user doesn't necessarily know as well.
"too generic" huh? Hm.... I'm guessing the category wasn't specific enough.
We're trying to do category clean-up at the same time as approving and stuff.
Pretty much the rule of thumb when filing your picture:
if it can go into a sub category, it should.
So, if it's a picture of JUST Miroku from Inu Yasha and you file it as:
Anime/Manga > Inu Yasha
it'll get rejected. Why? Because there's a:
Anime/Manga > Inu Yasha > MIROKU
category.
So yeah, use the sub-categories. that's why they're there.
Let's make both our lives a little easier, shall we? |

Hey raymei this occured weeks ago, it's long been washed over ;)
I usually don't have any trouble with finding the right (i.e. best, most specific) category for my drawings. For all I know I may have forgotten to assign it a category before hitting "Submit" . . . uploading in a frenzy will do that to ya ;)
I still have some lingering nags about that particular reason not being descriptive enough (even, "category too generic" would be much more specific), but in the end of the day, it's no major concern. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Oh you should see some of the rejection reasons Denis brings to attention every now and then. Methinks some people get a little too rushed/impatient/frustrated when the list is long. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Oh, I can imagine what some of them might be . . . .
Which makes me wonder. When an image is rejected, do AP members select from a list of reasons and/or type in their own? _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

So far it's a "type in your own" thing, though some people have various reasons pre-typed that they can just copy and paste. I type my own because in the time it would take to copy and paste, I can type the whole rejection message anyway. And I think a bit more specific directions are more helpful in some cases than general "wrong category" or something (like the very general drop down menu Epilogue has for rejections). Especially now with directions like "submit to a more specific original subcategory" instead of original>original artwork. That sorta thing.
I believe there was talk of a drop down menu at one point, but that would have to wait until the categories are sorted out better I would think. Or have a drop down menu plus an area to add additional comments. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |
