MTV used to be great. It was great for about ten years. Started on a great concept, and yeah you could argue "video killed the radio star" or "it's everything wrong with music". That's not really true. Yes, it made music a visual thing, but most of those bands already looked like that. Their acts were already as video-friendly, MTV just showcased that to people not in the LA scene.
For ten years there it worked. Music videos were fun, a cool new way to present your singles instead of just on the radio, and their programming was more along the lines of Headbanger's Ball. The problem with MTV sucking started when they replaced the staff because they were too "old" and "not in touch with the youth" and brought in fresh new faces that didn't have the same perspective as the originals did. They were more interested in ratings, money, and a successful channel, not music videos. Music videos by that time were old news. Real World being one of the first, now they're more "trendy TV" instead of "MUSIC television".
It's pretty sad when they have to make a whole new channel to even play anything related to the NAME of their channel. VH1 was better for a long time up until recently. They still play a much better variety of videos, but recent articles (one of which I posted here) say they're leaning more towards nostalgia programming because "it's what the people want". FUSE is good for now, but I wouldn't be surprised if they go down the same road eventually.
Current MTV is a bunch of greedy fucks that are chasing after popularity and ratings. They lost all sense of the original purpose of the channel a decade ago and have been sinking further and further into crap. Respectable artists can't even get a video played anymore if they're not "flavor of the moment". You could look back at the 80s programming and see all the glitz and glam and think "What the hell, that sucks!", but it was happening anyway. MTV didn't cause that.
I'm rambling. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

MTV killed grunge.....
There's a movement in Olympia to revive it, but they're all posing Nirvana.
I hope my band won't turn out like that.
But, back to the topic:
MTV has issues with their choice of programming. Do you really want to see Jessica Simpson ask if Chicken of the Sea is really Chicken? I hope not. Do you want to see shows starring her little sister? I hope not. Why not sell the whole station to the Simpson Family?
Only show I liked was Punk'd, and that was because Frankie Muniz got his Porche snatched away and he freaked out. Any teen with a car like that deserves to be humiliated on T.V.
They adopted reality shows. BIG MISTAKE. Every reality show is a mistake. If it was reality, "Survivor" would have 6 people shipped off the island for malaria and have 10 people shipped off in body bags. Then, there would be no one left. That would be reality.
You want honest coverage of music, don't go to MTV. VH1 or any other station would be good.
Me, I just buy the DVDs and CDs now. Or use Windows Media.
Well, I never had cable to begin with, anyways.....
If MTV makes one more series involving the Simpsons............. _________________ Not all who wander are lost.

Oh god, someone left the TV on in the other room yesterday or the day before, and her little sister's show came on. And she was singing. Good lord, someone take the mic away from that girl! Please!
MTV kills everything. But everything has to die at some point. It becomes bloated and overplayed and boring with or without mtv. Too many clones that overshadow the ones who started it. It's just that recently the latest trends on MTV have sucked. And part of that is that originally the artists on MTV were visual artists, but they weren't popular because of that. Well, not all. There were some teen pop ones, but I try to forget they existed. The visual thing, like I said in my first post, was the scene at the time. They looked like that before they ever got a record deal or on television. People were looking like that, you put 'em on tv, and it just works. Despite what people think, there were a lot of dog ugly 80s glam bands. But the flashy look and kickass tunes made 'em popular, not being a pinup boy.
These days artists become big because they're pretty. All it takes is a nice face, decent pro songwriter to give you some material, minimal vocal talent, and a few name connections never hurt (such as Jessica's sister). <_< _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. She built the image that she was dumb, and now she's trying to get rid of it. I wonder if she knows the meaning of the word "Bullshit"......

Disney ran the video for "Guerrilla Radio" by RATM once. Bad idea.....
I hate it when music channels censor the goddamn stuff. I don't want to hear:
"Don't let any of those ....... in my headspace"
I wanna hear:
"Don't let any of those fuckers in my headspace"

They don't even play music videos on their countdowns anymore. They play half the video, and most of the rest is covered up by kids screaming or people talking over it. (which VH1 started doing during their countdown...bastards!) As for the new Headbanger's Ball...lame. Really really lame. They should've let everyone remember it fondly instead of bringing back that half-assed incarnation of it. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Going off topic a little, just hang with me for a sec.
On the Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 soundtrack, they have "Guerrilla Radio" in the playlist("Guerrilla Radio" won the 1999 Grammy for Best Metal Performance) and when I first heard it, I was shocked. In a game, rated "Teen" for strong lyrics and blood, I heard this:
"Lights out
GUERRILLA RADIO
Turn that *edit* platinum */edit* up!"
I was shocked NOT to hear the true chorus, which will be edited here, but you'll get it:
"Lights out
GUERRILLA RADIO
Turn that s**t up"
MTV provided the track. I wrote them a nasty letter. I got a "Thanks for your support" letter back and a free cap.
Back to the subject.
GODDAMN TO HELL THE FCC FOR CENSORSHIP. If I had some control in this country, I'd shoot whoever is in charge and yell out to everyone, "THEY WANTED TO BAN FREE SPEECH. MY ANCESTORS DIDN'T DIE FOR THIS BULLSHIT. YOU WANT CENSORSHIP, GO TO FUCKIN' IRAQ."
Also:
MTV needs to be torched and sent to Hell. Then again, we don't wanna torture Satan too much. Might come up and kill us all....... _________________ Not all who wander are lost.

The VJ's make me scared for humanity. Not that the old ones were brilliant, there were some real tools, but come on. "Yo, I'm La La..." What the fuck? Riki Rachtman still rules. All downhill after Riki.
And yeah, their censoring sucks. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

The only way to get your work uncensored is to keep it "clean for the kiddies".
MTV wants the kiddies to watch, so they say that they'll keep it clean for them.

Lol! VH1 made a comment about her having everything and I mean everything, but a brain. I'd rather be poor and smart, than dumb and rich. At least by being smart I can work my way up with dignity.
And BTW, MTV sucks. I wonder why they cramp up their station with all those reality shows. Do they really expect to attract an audience with those stupid shows? Who the heck cares about Jessica Simpson's sister and her life? <_< |

The problem is those shows do attract an audience. They can guarantee ratings with a show. People will tune in at 10pm Wednesday night to watch The Real World (I don't know when it's on, just go with it). But far fewer people will tune in just to watch random music videos. That's where programs like Headbanger's Ball and such helped, people tuned in to watch three solid hours of balls out rock n' roll. That's why you only see music videos late at night. If they played them during the day, most of the ratings they'd get would be people flipping channels and thinking "hey, maybe I'll watch this for awhile..."
Like I said, the new staff (and for all I know, there's a third generation staff by now) is more concerned with ratings and making money than the originals were about creating a new media for music. Reality shows and stupid specials get them ratings and money. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Like I said, if "reality" television was truly "reality":
-On "Survivor", 10 people would be dead from malaria, 4 would have been mauled by animals, and 1 would have tried to escape only to be killed by a shark.
-On "The Bachelor", the bachelor would be stabbed with an ice pick halfway through because some crazy bitch got pissed off.
-On "The Bachelorette", same scenario, only with a crazy bastard, instead.
-On "The Real World", they'd discover that they don't live in one, and kill themselves.
Oh, if only those things would happen......... _________________ Not all who wander are lost.

Unfortunately, we must not be the majority. There's apparently a huge population of brain dead idiots sitting in front of MTV right now making it worth their time to produce such shows. God help us all. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |
