Are they better/easier to use than Crayola colored pencils/markers?

There's no craft store in my town. Do they sell 'em at Wal-Mart?

The pencils are far more blendable than Crayola, and you can find the scholar versions of them at Wal-Mart.

Prisma markers take some getting used to because they are SCADS different from water-based ones, and are only really seen in specialty stores. They're expensive, but I personally really like the effect of alcohol-based markers and think it's worth it.

Thanks, but I can't seem to find them at my Wal-Mart, AND it's a Super-Center. Sad

I checked in the art supply section, and I can only find watercolor pencils and fabric markers. Confused

Strange, they have them in the Wal Mart here...

Staples usually has them too, if you have one of those near by.

Dude, use the internet, it's much cheaper, Try Dick Blick.

Get your parents to use the credit card for you and you can pay them directly, they really won't mind if it's for art. I've tried it many times.

buy 24 marker set plus Light Peach, Eggshell, Light Tan, Brick Beige, Light Olive Green, Cool Grey 20%, and 40%

PROFIT!

Hmmm....I suppose that's a fairly good idea. But are they expensive? Man, 'cause my dad ain't gonna buy me a 24 pack of colored pencils for about $30 or something! That's a rip-off! How cheap do they get? I don't use eBay for personal reasons, so I buy stuff from Amazon. Plus, I kind of press down hard when I color/draw. I go through colored pencils fairly quick.

Listen to Brian. He is wise in these ways.

Markers usually run up to a couple bucks each, but they're nothing compared to copics, which can run you up to eight dollars/marker depending on where you get them from. I got a pack of the pencil crayons on sale at Staples for $15, for a pack of 60, but expect to pay closer to $20.

Trust me. If I could get my hands on Prismacolors when I was living in a tiny isolated Northern Manitoba town of about 1000 people, you can get some wherever you're living.

Where's NC? not too familiar with America geography... North Carolina?

as long as you aren't living in Alaska or some American military facilities in Bahrain or something, you can get your hands on prismas, period.

and yes, expect to spend about a dollar American for each pencil and 2.50 on each markers.

Okay....found some on a site someone suggested earlier. If I DO buy, what pack should I get? 12, 24, or 36? What would be good for me?

By the way, I DO live in North Carolina. That's on the east coast of America. =)

the trick is to buy a mediocre selection in numbers, and increase as you need more.

ya see, I didn't do that and I ended up with gazillion of greens and purples.

I'd take one different shade of browns over 3 greens any day, I use warm colors + pale blues and ultramarines so much more often.

oh yeah, buy greys, more than you would assume that you'd need them, cuz... well, you'll find that they are useful.

Cool greys have bluish tint

Warm greys have reddish tint

French Greys have brown/yellowish tint

you can mix and match.

I've given you the list of colors I recommended, that's pretty much how I started.

oh, and you might want to buy some paper for markers, marker layout is good, thin bond paper is even better imo.

That's cool. I want to draw people, and I need some help on that. I'm tired of using just the color peach. Sad

um... i think the craft store Michaels has them... oh and a difference between prismacolors and crayola is, the prismacolors (the big sets) those are usually softer and you have to sharpen them more often to keep detail good. i bought a twelve pack of prismacolor hard pencils for details like eyes and scales. crayola pencils i think are more waxy then prismacolors too...
