Just bored and curieous, does anyone else believe in aliens? I believe because space is eternal and life would be too dull with only us to occupy it.
What do you believe? _________________ Loves sentient robots and machines. *hugs Soundwave*. PM me if you got a story/art with them! |

Space is "eternal?" "Vast" and "unknown," maybe, but "eternal" is a weird word to use.
I believe in aliens. I'm somewhat undecided on whether or not any have visited Earth, though I'm leaning strongly towards no.
Why does the poll talk about ghosts? _________________ Go Yankees! |

Poll-Just a side prize of curieosity.
And yes, I use "eternal" and "space" in the same sentence because I've never heard of an edge to it, so I assume it to be eternal, unending, or the edge of it is a looooooooooooong way out of sight.
Alien visitations... Eh, I can see why that can be doubted; supposedly hundreds or even thousands of people are visited by aliens every year, but if that is true, then how do the aliens avoid detection so easily? And what would they want with us? Yes, easily doubted. But still, there are at least a small hand full of videos and pictures out there that just can not be explained... _________________ Loves sentient robots and machines. *hugs Soundwave*. If something is eternal it means it has always existed and will continue to exist forever, not that it's infinitely large.
The universe is expanding. If something can get bigger, that means it's not already infinitely large, so the universe does have an edge. It's just.. so far away that you can never get there or see it.
Show me a picture/video that can't be explained. Scully's magical cancer alien baby doesn't count. _________________ Go Yankees! |

ok that was a wonder ful response to that. as far as ailens go i might give you any number of different answers concerning that depending on when you ask me. ive seen a couple things that terrified me to hell and only one was real life. it just scared the living daylights outta me. and the fact that i was near a graveyard had nuthing to do with it either. damn thing just sat there jet black and hovering. didnt look like a helicopter neither. however it was the type of thing our govt could have definitatly developed. i just got this really evil wave emenating off it though.
as far as ghosts go, yah there around alot, specially pets of old. i still hear tonails clicking across the tiles when my dog is sleeping next to the bed. or ill catsh a glimpse of snowbear in the corner of my eye and he's been dead some 16-17 years now. _________________ with this frame of mind you better pray i never get a point of view gun, too late i just did. just pray i dont aim at you then! |

It all depends on what you mean by aliens.
1. You mean any life on other planets. In that case, yes, I believe that there is a large number of planets out there with archaea on them. Archaea are single-celled organisms that include extremofiles. That is, they live in extreme climates. For example there is so much archaea living underground in temperatures up to 200 degrees C (the pressure is high enough that there is still liquid water, which is essential for life) that if we took it all out above ground it would cover the surface of the earth 3 meters high.
Anyhow, scientists think that these organisms form fairly easily out of organic molecules. So, it is very very likely that these exist on other planets. In fact, it is though that on Europa, the icy moon of Jupiter, has extremophiles in it. Scientists think that the huge tide effects of the massive Jupiter affect the moon so much that the kinetik energy is enough for liquid water to exist under a layer of ice. There may be extermophiles living here.
2. Now, if you define "aliens" as intellegent beings, there are so many things that have to come together (I can elaborate if needed. ;p), that it is very very unlikely (I can dig up an equation if asked) that there is intelligent life. In fact, only up to 12 planets in the whole universe probably have eukaryotic cells on them. (That is, cells that contain member-bound organelles.)
;p There you go, isn't science fun? _________________ Hint: everything moves.

Depends on what you mean by life. Could be something not carbon based.
"Fairly easily." Ahhah, I kinda mostly agree with you, though you make it sound a little too easily. There's a long way between a liposome and a cell.
Where'd you come up with the number 12?
I dunno if other places in the universe would have something that we'd define as eukaryotic. It's not like evolution aims for bound organelles, it just happened to happen on our planet. I could see far away places having living things more complex than a little bundle of genetic material, but it probably wouldn't resemble any of the more complicated life forms on Earth. _________________ Go Yankees! |

That's true, life could even be totally different from what we think of as life, although I'd say it might be fairly close to what we have. It seems that there are certain things essential for life (water, for example) and Carbon-based life is most likely to occur due to the way Carbon bonds. No other molecule holds 4 bonds as well as carbon. (Si, 1 row lower on the periodic table has a whole another energy orbital, d, that comes into play.) But there is a probability that somewhere in the universe something totally whacky is going on. ;p
I kind of remember the number 12 from class, ;p but here is a more convincing argument:
Drake equation: N = R* x f_p x n_e x f_l x f_i x f_c x L
N = numer of civilizations in our galaxy with which it's possible to communicate
R* = average star formation in our galaxy
f_p = fraction of the start that have planets (scientists now think that's alot higher than it used to be)
n_e = average number of planets that can potentially support life (habitable zone, etc)
f_l = fraction of the planets that can develop life at some point (you're right, it's not that "fairly easy")
f_i = fraction of the above that can develop intelligent life (teeny tiny - like 10 factors come into play here, I can elaborate)
f_c = fraction of civilizations that develop the sufficient technology to communicate with us
L = length of time the civilizations release detectable signals into space
So, the 12 I was talking about was everything but the last two terms. The current estimate of N (according to wikipedia) is around 2.31. So I suppose it isn't entirely unlikely that we'd see an alien, but that 2.31 does not include the desire those alien civilizations have to communicate with us.
Also, considering how far away they are, we'd likely get their signals millions of years after they've sent them. _________________ Hint: everything moves.

I've always thought of the Drake Equation as more of a... demonstration of how small the chances of contact with other life is, instead of something that produced a real number with any significant meaning.
I'd like to think that any civilization advanced enough to purposely send messages into space would be interested in contact. Can't really think of a reason not to. _________________ Go Yankees! |

They'd probably think we'll come to their planet, and blow the shit up. Also, countries don't exist on earth, we all look the same and have the same culture. _________________ "Sarah's future makes me sad." - Benk |

I personally think the life on other planets will be very similar to the ones on earth, I might not be very creative, but I can't imagine life being based on anything other than carbon, saying that, I can't think of any self-replicating molecules other than DNA and RNA. Because they code for proteins, much the protein would be the same. etc. etc. The only thing that might vary would be the little differences, like using copper instead of iron and arsenic instead of phosphorus. But we already have examples of extremophiles doing that already so... _________________ "Sarah's future makes me sad." - Benk |

Agreed. The parameters are all completely hypothetical, and the infinite-monkeys theorem that people use to justify life "out there" is lost on some people.

Wow, you lost me with all that proteine and exo-howeveryourpernounceits, but I suppose that's one reason why I'm such a hopeless romantic and look at the stars, actully beilieving in intellegente life beyond out solar system. The other reason why I'm a dopey romantic is that no one's ever told me that aliens aren't/may not be real. No one's ever told me about any of the more important things in life, like the truth about Santa Clause or the Birds and the Bees, so no one's ever told me that ghosts and aliens can't be real. So yeah, I've grown up with an open, unhindered mind.
Except about Big Foot-now that is just a total load of crap. _________________ Loves sentient robots and machines. *hugs Soundwave*. PM me if you got a story/art with them! |
