No reason for this other than curiosity. Now before anyone answers, you MUST set aside your love or hate of a group, how hot the person is, how funny they are, etc. All I want to know is who your favorite SINGERS are, on voice merit alone. No looks, personality, or lyrical reasons allowed. Got it? So if you hate a group, you can still dig the person's voice.

Mine:

Axl Rose (Guns n' Roses): It'll either annoy you or fascinate you. Great range, unique sound, both the high notes and low, soft melodies are well done.

Boy George (Culture Club): I'm listening to Culture Club right now. <_< Rag on the Boy n' I'll take you down. No idea why, but I love his voice. The only reason I ever listen to Culture Club.

Billy Idol: Listen to Sweet Sixteen and you'll know exactly why he makes the list.

David Lee Roth (Van Halen): Classic rock n' roll voice. Really versatile in the styles he can pull off. (and a couple tunes off his most recent solo record are sexy as hell)

Steven Tyler (Aerosmith): One of the most distinct voices out there.

Brian Johnson (AC/DC...Bon, too, actually): Same reason as Steven, though Tom Keifer from Cinderella sounds a little similar.

David Bowie: No reason I can be bothered to explain.

Ozzy Osbourne: Same reasons as Axl.

Vince Neil (Motley Crue): Way back when. He used to hit some awesome notes. Like in Save Our Souls, the line "for a life so good it sure feels bad" is just...yeah.

Alice Cooper: Both his "School's Out" style and "How You Gonna See Me Now"

Stevie Rachelle (Tuff): The guy's got a nice set of pipes that are still pretty damn good.

Cyndi Lauper: If you haven't noticed, I like a lot of "odd" voices. *shrug*

Sebastian Bach (Skid Row): Used to be absolutely amazing. Still decent enough but back in Skid Row...wow.

Jani Lane (Warrant): Great range and sound. Still has it from everything I've heard, though substance issues have pretty much destroyed any chance of finding out for myself. Sad

Bah, list is getting too long. (and for anyone who knows me and is wondering why I didn't include Bret, I dig him and all of course, but he's just not that much of an awesome singer. Sorry Bret. Not to say he's bad, just nothing incredibly special talent-wise *shrug*)

ooo great topic! you have some cool choices- i like axl's and steven tyler's voices a lot, too. hmm some of my favourites are:

dave grohl (foo fighters)- wow his voice is just so cool. he can sing softly and beautifully, but its the screaming that gets me every time (anyone here the little nikki cover? ah i get chills hearing him sing it)

brandon boyd (incubus)- amazing, beautiful voice. sometimes can be a bit whiny, but i like that. he has great range, too

chris conley (saves the day)- well, before their newest album, he had this great, cracking, whiny voice that was just filled with emotion. one of the main reasons i love them so much is his voice. unfortunately, i think he got singing lessons or something b/c on the new record his voice is so... normal. ick

tom petty- granted, i only really know a few of their songs, but i love his voice!! it's kinda like chris conley's b/c it's also full of emotion. it has this great tone to it, too

monique powell (save ferris)- wow one of my goals is to be able to sing half as well as her. she has this wonderful, strong, trilly voice with amazing range. it's so full of energy

kurt cobain (nirvana)- well, what can be said about kurt's voice? it's deep and throaty and he can scream with the best of them. and it's just... amazing. i can't describe it really.

o dam i gotta go to bed (chem test tomorrow wooooo) but i have a few more that i'll add later.

BoA*- In most of her songs her voice is OK. But with the Love & Honesty album her voice got ALOT better. *listens to Over~Across the Time~...I love her versitality.

Namie Amuro - As much as I like her style I don't like her voice that much. It is average at best and scratchy. And she tries WAY to hard to hit the high notes.

Hikaru Utada: Most of her voice gets a A because sometimes she can't hit the hgih notes but with her more recent songs whre she does hit them she gets a S+.lol

Crystal Kay: She has a nice voice and brings something new to the table in j-pop because she has a nice, powerful, soulful voice. But compared to other black singers her voice is too similar. But she is like the opposite of Jhene.

Jhene: Her asian roots take care of her voice and she can hit the high notes very well and a soft but beautful voice. But since her voice is typical j/kpop star America usually doesn't hear this type of voice.

So if Jhene and Crystal Kay switched from Japan and the US they would be considered to have an average voice ^__^;;;

Kumi Koda: I love her voice is unique and very powerfula nds sultry. I used to think shew was only one sided cause her voice was only deep and powerful but now her new singles have alot more higher notes which he hits very well.

Aaliyah: I love her voice it can be so high yet so low. It can be powerful but it is mostly soft, she has the most versitile voice to me. And I love it the most out of any of my favorite singers.

Gah, I forgot Tom Petty! George Michael would get my vote, too, and it takes a lot for me to set aside Wham... And thinking today, I'm going to add Mick Jagger. Not a huge Stones fan, but I dig him. What's the Matchbox 20 dude's name? Rob Thomas? Not crazy about their music, but his voice is cool (and the writing with Jagger on Disease was catchy as hell).

There's a difference between being a good singer/musician and a skilled one, you know. Kurt Cobain lacked guitar abilities, but that doesn't mean Nirvana's not good (and you people can argue all you want about the poor guitar playing being on purpose, but it doesn't change the fact).

Today's addition for me shall be Prince. Not really a Prince fan, but his voice is cool.

I like the lead singer's voice from the band Steel Train. His voice in the song "Story In A Dream" is like <333333333

yea freddie mercury's voice is pretty cool

hehe i still love the guitars for nirvana's songs. tho they sound messy, i think they're great- it gives them a unique sound. you have to admit krist novaselic is a pretty awesome bass player, tho (especially on bleach). aaaaand i still love kurt's voice, despite his mediocre guitar playing abilities.

o also i forgot to add Michael Stipe from R.E.M. his voice is so distinct and expressive

ha billy joe armstrong's voice (from green day) is also very cool- he enunicates words so differently and it's got a great tone

Jim Morrison, lead singer of The Doors. Lovely voice. Haunting in "Riders on the Storm" to screaming in "Break on Through" to wonderfully melodic on "Crystal Ship". That man had talent. Too bad he's dead.

Who from nowadays? Does a choir count? Then everyone in the "Carmina Burana" Opera. Because Opera is lovely. 'Course, everyone has to be a good singer in opera, so I guess it can't count, now can it?

Hmmm... tricky.
Ah! I know! Britney Spears! right!
I'm kidding of course. I do that sometimes. And ramble.

I'm quiet now.

ahhh jim morrison! that's who i forgot! whew thanks- i had this nagging feeling i'd forgotten someone. but yea his voice rocks- he had great range and could change his voice to fit many styles and moods. (screaming, melodic, haunting- like you said, ed.de)

err yes... *waves flag* yay britney... *takes flag and shoves it down britney's throat* spear britney.

yes opera is lovely, but only to a point, i think. i don't really like listening to the high-pitched singing for too long (i'm more of a broadway musical person). then again, i've only seen 2 operas (carmen and the mikado- hilarious!) so lol my opinion isn't worth much on this subject.

Yes yes, Jim. I even made a project in ceramics dedicated to him. Screw me for forgetting.

And yep, Kurt was a good guitar player. I was just pointing out "good" doesn't mean "skilled" (directed at Pow). Smile I listen to a lot of people I'm not adding just because they may be good singers, but they're not particularly "skilled" as much as some others.
