Ok I am not entirely sure if this was asked yet, so be gentle on me people.
Let's sit the admins down and ask them; how did Fanart central come into existance? And no not as in "Through the power of the internets." I mean as in what inspired you guys to make this site?

Serious discussion please and thanks in advance. =P

It's a long story that doesn't get much exposure.

From what I've heard, around late 2003 there was a small group of South Park fans and while there were already sites catering to South Park fan fiction, they wanted one for South Park fan art. They built it, people used it for awhile, but as people lost interest with the group and broke up, the staff decided what they should do with a site that nobody's using much anymore, and it became re-envisioned as Fanart Central.
It's a long story that doesn't get much exposure.

Actually the site dates back to 2001. We started out as strata mentioned as a site for South Park, initially named "SP Fanart" that. Since then we have changed the site's theme to general fanart, and its name changed to "Fanart Central". Fanart Central registered its domain name on January 18, 2004. On May 19 2006, Fanart Central went offline for a short period, At that time version 2.0 of the site's layout was unveiled and again on September 5 of 2007 version 3.0 of the site's layout was released.

Answer the question at to the inspiration for Fanart Central....Almost All the South Park fans where gone and leaving and the staff at that time broadened the scope by a few metric tons ....OK that is just pure speculation and not the answer but it sounded good.

Either way, South Park is one of the oldest categories (ID #8) in our system.

If you are interested in the personnel:

The very first admin and owner of the site is CstDenis. In the beginning, Lasher, Fallen and Kate eventually became the first forum/chat admins. (Lasher might have come later) Not too sure who was involved in the mainsite cause I never really commented/hung around there. Lasher comes by here regularly, Fallen and Kate went to DA.

Layzcarter eventually became one of the admins, I know she contributed a lot to the blue version of FAC that a lot of you remember. During this time, DG-Sama, Powtaz, Gray, Flea, Amy and Raymei all contributed to the early FAC in some capacity (I think mostly AP). I came here at the end of that period. Eventually Strata got involved and later became one of the admins. (The guy up there). He mostly did category work, I think.

Eventually, Fayore and DF became roleplaying moderators back in the days when we had 20+ people doing rp. DG-Sama was anime/manga moderator. James and Kitzy was made a general moderator. I think he was involved with the grey version we have now. Breloom and I did AP around this period. Battou came by around this time and became heavily involved in the sister project Photo Lucidity. He's also one of the current admins (The second guy up there).

Now most of the former sitehelpers and moderators are gone. Layz still posts here sporadically. Gray is pretty much gone permanently. London was made part of the AP and now she's one of the general moderators. Dark Angel of Light (she really needs a shorter name) is one of the newest site helpers.

Sora does something, I think mostly forum and mainsite coding. Which is a basically invisible job.

True true, and invisible also means thankless. Nobody ever thanks the developers for the new features we melt our brains building....

Hey, Frapper is going offline, It's sad to see a lot of free web services bonking. Not really missing geocities though, or netscape.

I blame the increasing use of ad blockers. SOMETHING still has to pay for a free service.

It would be difficult to get this information, but it'd be interesting to know what percentage of active FAC users also have deviantart accounts.

It's obvious why an FAC user would also want a deviantart account or vice versa, but I don't really know why someone who is active on dA would want to abandon dA in favor of FAC. I don't really know why I have an FAC account, as I was active on dA long before I even knew this place existed.

I saw DA, and to be truthful, wasent all that impressed by it, plus it irked me that you have to sign up to look at certian pictures.

However I have the "Simple and clean" fan-made KH forum to thank for stumbling across FAC. I saw an excellent Bankotsu picture by a fellow forum goer and decided to look around the site more, I had to say I liked the look of the site and all the amazing artwork. (This was before it got over run with thousands of Sonic oc fanart. =x) So yeah, signed up and never looked back. xP

I have never, ever run into a picture on dA that required a subscription to view. You need a subscription to search for pictures that were submitted ages ago (years and years and years), but the pictures themselves are accessible to everyone.

If you mean you have to sign up to view adult or potentially offensive pictures, then most websites are like that. I think FAC is like that. Youtube is like that. It's not unusual.

Amazing artwork? Are there any amazing artists on this site that don't also have a dA account?

Actually no we don't, the adult content filters where set to show warning thumbnail for guests. Perhaps maybe we should though.

Ah, okay.

It doesn't really make that much of a difference either way. The time it takes to sign up and log in for FAC, dA, YT, etc, is barely anything.

..on the subject of waiting, is the AP going away any time soon?
