Well this topic has been in my head from July last year when I moved from Good Olde England to 'Sunny' Scotland (I use the term lightly I don't really mean it but soz if you happen to be Scottish)
And I started going to the Harris Academy (sound posh eh? It isn't that posh!!) everyone who met me were all like are you from Australia or all these other countires and hardly anyone got it right in the end I got annoyed turned round and said 'look I'm not from any of those countries I'm from England' they looked stunned.
And even now after a year I still get some people saying 'where are you from?' and now I'm getting totally pissed off and all I want ot know is can anyone really place people to the right country by their accent!!!!!!!!
Please tell me or I may got mad and do something I may regret later on (I will tell my mate that the guy who she fancies told me he fancies me then every time she goes away he keeps kissing me, if I told her she'd kill me she waaaaaaaay to over protective of him!!!) |

Accents are I guess how people from a certain area pronounce things. Like I'm sure you can tell the difference between someone from New York and someone from Texas _________________

Well it all depends on what those people have been exposed to. If someone from a South American country walked up to me, I couldn't tell where they were from by their accent because I haven't heard many (at least not heard them and known where they were from). If someone hasn't been exposed to the difference between English, Australian, etc., it's unlikely they could tell. Can't really expect people to know something they're not familiar with.
Just like if you brought me three people from somewhere back East, I could probably pick out the major ones (Boston, New York, etc.), but I doubt I could tell the difference between the three people from close areas with similar, yet slightly different accents because I'm not from there and haven't heard them often. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. I can tell the difference between Southern(Y'all) and New York/Jersey(bawl=ball). I can tell the difference between French and British.....
You use the accent you've grown up around the most. For instance, I have a friend from Berlin, but he speaks with an American accent because he's lived here longer.

I love Scotish accents. ^_^ ...and bagpipes. I like them too.
When I first moved from AZ to NC I felt stupid because I kept having to ask everyone to repeat themselves. After a while it became easier to understand, but the altered grammer still bugs me. However, I do find myself talking a little quicker with less pronounciation once in a while. That bugs me even more when it comes out of my own mouth. Since I moved to FL I kinda have my own accent back. Yay! _________________ |

Ah, but then there's that special accent people get when the family has it's own. Like me. :D
I live in SoCal, but about three generations back, the family was from North Dakota. I know that seems like a long time, but quite a bit of that has stayed. A lot of my friends think I'm an immigrant because I don't speak in the California Standard. Granted, most are Asian immigrants themselves, so they can't actually tell where the accent's from, but they still say I have one. The popular theory is that I'm Middle Eastern. (HA!) So I have a bit of fun with that.
Look, if people can't tell where you're from, just have fun with it. Next time one of them idiots asks, say you're from Brazil. :D

One of my teachers has a mother-in-law from Ireland. She's lived in Texas for five years. Irish-Texan accent... now that is weird. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |
she can't say the word 'seashells' or 'chimney'.
I can't pronounce the word seashells. I always wind up saying "sheeshells"
This reminds me of this one time (then this one time, at band camp). I was pretending that I had a Scottish accent all day, and some people really thought I was Scottish....
