Grate Master John Norman from Gor. _________________ "Do not risk your life for me," she said.
"Why not?" he said.
"Because I am really only a slave girl, " she said.
"It is for such that men most cheerfully risk their lives," he said.
"Oh?" she said.
"Certainly," he said, "you would not expect them to go to all that trouble for a mere free female, would you?"

"You sure don't need an amplifier." Soda said, and stuck his tongue out at the back of Darry's head. I stifled a giggle. If you want to see something funny, It's a tough hood sticking his tongue out at his big brother.

C.S. Lewis
J.R.R. Tolkien
Madeleine L'Engle
Frances Hodgeson Burnett (for A Little Princess and The Secret Garden)
Isaac Asimov
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (specifically for Holmes)
George MacDonald (especially his fantasies)
Robin McKinley (She's a good storyteller, even if I'm not keen on her apparent no-meta policy.)
Calvin Miller (sort of. His Christian allegories had lovely semi-poetic writing, his attempts at fantasy worldbuilding were incompetent)
Cynthia Voight (for the Dicey books and Building Blocks)
Louis L'Amour (sometimes. I consider his books the literary equivalent of a popcorn flick.)
Gayle Carson Levine (attack of the fantasy chick-lit)
Hm... I sense a pattern. |

Lately I've been increasingly getting into Cathrynne Valente and Neil Gaiman - can get quite dark at times but there's a power to his stories, and she has a descriptive skill which feels like poetry and a frequent flash of whimsy. And I like Naomi Novik's His Majesty's Dragon series alright. |
