Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
I had to read that book for my English class and upon completion, all I could say was, "Fuck you, Steinbeck."
I've had to read his The Pearl before, as well. There's only so much nihilism I can take. DX
Hmmm. I don't really have a favourite book, although I'm a great fan of [s]vampire homoerotica[/s] fantasy, sci-fi, and suspense. ^_^ _________________

If you like sci-fi, i advise checking out Mortal engines, Predators gold, Infernal devices, and soon, The black plain
Its a future in which the worlds cities and towns have gotten up, and built big traction engines so they can run around and eat eachother.
Its actually really serious, and its about a war between tractionists (People who support traction cities, which move on tracks nad eat eachother) and anti-tractionists (The green storm, anti-tractionists league). Instant sci-fi heaven! _________________ I came

No kidding. I can't stand Steinbeck. The only thing worse than him is The Lord of the Flies.
Sorry, this isn't a worst book thread...
If you like fantasy, Clive Barker's Abarat trilogy is good. And by good, I also mean weird. Like really really REALLY weird. The amount of imagination in his books is staggering. Passing through a city, his main character sees more weird things in a few paragraphs than I can imagine to fill out half a book. It's fantastic.
Kelley Armstrong and Tanya Huff are mostly less fantasy than realistic fantasy (oxymoron much?) but I love realistic fantasy, so it's right up my alley.
Garth Nix's Sabriel is good too. _________________ Disgaea's Overlords Dance in Worlds Beyond Infinity while Mifuyus Magical Multiplying Mole reads the epic Chronicles of Yord, and you learn that your Craving for Finding a Heart of Snow is Taboo in VG unless you dare undertake The Combine of Sin... |

I like the earthsea quartet, by ursula le guinn. Its good fantasy, But she doesn't put in much speech, and i can go through reading four or five paragraphs and only understand one of them, then read them all over again and understand it. _________________ I came

Ah. See, I love dialogue. That might be one of the reasons why, when I tried to read her books, I couldn't really get into them. But that was a while ago...maybe I should try again. |
I had to read that book for my English class and upon completion, all I could say was, "f**k you, Steinbeck."
Oh yeah, I know that feeling. Quite frankly, I thought the ending was inadaquete. I mean, poor Lennie, moron that he is, acting stupid and just completely getting murdered for it. But damn, he does have a rather unhealthy obsession with rabbits and dogs...A fetish? Maybe. Hmmm....
The Bar Code Tattoo by Suzanne Weyne
That was a really, really good book. Like 1984, yet at the same time, not. I thought it was the most original sci-fi/futuristic things I had read in a long time. I need to buy that sometime...
My favorite author is Kelley Armstrong (Bitten, Stolen, Dime Store Magic, Industrial Magic, Haunted, and soon, Broken). She's an awesome author. She takes supernatural events and creatures, puts them in a present-day city, and makes them look perfectly normal. You know she's good if she can get you to believe that werewolves could be running around your city even as you breathe. And Cassandra, the vampire? She's just awesome. Not because she's a vampire--because she's so bloody hysterical. Pun intended.
I read Bitten, and found it rather interesting. I was impressed, because usually I just HATE the vampire/werewolf genre. It just gets so stale after a while that I wanna puke. But it was funny because she definetley recharged the genre for me. Doesn't mean I'm going to rush out and buy some vampire crap, but she is a very good writer, and definetely got my respect.
Barry Eisler is very good. I'm much into the intrigue genre, and I read his books about a Japanese/American hit man, and they are just amazing. They totally break the mold about that killer genre, and I just found them facinating. There's so much humor, and voice, yet at the same time, this incredible accuracy, and it just is really, really nice. Rain Fall, Rain Storm, Hard Rain, etc..
Robert Ludlum used to be my favorite author (in 6th grade or something) but after I realized that his plots almost always trail each other and NEVER change the mold, I grew out of them and moved on to better spy books...Though The Bourne Identity is still one of my favorites, all stereotypical spy crap aside, it was one of his most original. _________________ What does it all MEAN? |

Whoo-hoo! Somebody actually took my advice! My favorites of Kelley Armstrong's are Dime-Store Magic and Industrial Magic--I think she gets better as she goes. |

I take no one's advice!
Nah, I'm just kidding... I had read Bitten before you mentioned it, but thought I should add in a bit about it because it is a really interesting book. I haven't read her other ones, though.
Now if only someone out there would read the books I like.
*tear*.

I wasn't fond of Eragon. It didn't hold my interest...Dime-Store Magic and Summon the Keeper were better, in my opinion. And Abarat.
Wow.....Uhh, I'm an outcast. I didn't realize that so many people hated John Steinbeck's books, oh well what can you do?
Don't worry, I won't hate you personally for liking Steinbeck. It's just that as readers/teens we have a tendency to instantly hate a book if it is force fed to us. Let us find it on our own, fine, but having to read a book just ruins the experience.
Here are a few more books that are interesting...
The Last Vampire By Christopher Pike
Interview with a Vampire By Anne Rice (The book is WAY better than the movie)
Acceleration by Graham McNamee
A Child Called It, Lost Boy, & A Man Named Dave By Dave Pelzer
Left Behind series (both adult and kids)
I have not read IWAV by Rice, though I've heard from sooo many people that it is good. I'm not a real vamp fan, but it does look interesting. Acceleration...I dunno, for some reason, I just didn't click with that book.
A Child Called It was sad, but I've been reading up and it appears that he made most of the stuff up. His family and others around him are suing, and I don't blame them. There's been a lot of cases cropping up with falseties sprinkled in so called "true stories" and now people are coming out about it.
Left Behind...eh. I don't like the idea of the apocolypse. As an atheist, I find it a little bit....preachy. But the idea itself it interesting.
Jeez... Sorry Naomi. I am completely cramping your style. I'll shut up now and move to a different critism.
I wasn't fond of Eragon.
I thought that, for a nineteen year old, Eragon was fairly well written. That doesn't mean I'm going to become a fanatic or anything, but I did think it had a nice concept. Oh, and Ian...How's it going finding Eisler? _________________ What does it all MEAN? |

Looking...my stupid Borders is out...
I'm going to try the library next. Public, not school, because my school library has no good books. The last good author I found in a school library was Garth Nix's Sabriel in seventh grade...--.-- Although I did like Sabriel a lot...
Eragon was all right. It just didn't hold my interest. I got to about page 100...then I found Clive Barker and stopped reading Eragon. (shrug) Ah vell. |
