...Because they do suck?....
Honestly, if you like them, great. Listen to whatever you want. But you really can't be surprised when other people don't like them. Their music is very cheap and commercial, nothing original about it. And if nothing else you should be able to realize that musically they aren't very good at all. Their skills as musicians are very very small, and while musical ability has never been a requirement, the fact they lack originality to make up for it doesn't help.
You're gonna have to get used to people not liking what you do. Like I said in another thread, I've heard enough hair metal bashing to last four lifetimes, and I don't care. I know most of my favorite bands weren't revolutionary in the way the Beatles or U2 are, but I like them. So when people make true criticisms of them, I can't very well argue. Just like when people say bands like Linkin Park and Sum 41 aren't good musically, it's true. There's a huge number of reasons why those bands aren't liked.
And don't be surprised when none of those bands are around in 3 years. None of them have anything to give them staying power and will be dropped by their respective labels when the interest in them has faded. Such is the fate of bands who rely on teen trends.
Like I said, listen to whatever you like, but you can't get mad at people who don't like the fact those bands bring nothing to music. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

The major problem for me is i have no exposure to different kinds of music.... my parents dont want me to listen to music and none of my friends like anything thats not mainstream.... i have a hard time finding anyuthing like the bands you probably like FallenAngel |

Haha, thing is...people are always going to hate your music no matter what you like. I don't like the Beatles, after all. I don't like a lot of revolutionary musicians. I respect them, but I don't like their music. And I don't expect everyone to like my bands, but I would prefer everyone give them a chance (not reasonable, but it'd be nice).
I love one of the most hated genres of all time...besides disco...and maybe country...those two are probably hated more passionately by a lot of people. Hair metal gets no respect, and it doesn't particularly ask for respect. I know people will hate it, and hey, that's their choice. They have every right to say they were very much about the image, relied on their stage show, and a lot of times had cheesy songs. But at the same time, there were some amazing musicians that never got the recognition they deserved because people hated the way they looked (George Lynch, Jani Lane, etc. etc.).
But I like them, so screw everyone else. Long as I can listen to what I want, who really cares what anyone else thinks?
As for not being able to hear other bands, that's really a shame. Eventually, though, you'll be able to check out different genres, decades, and styles and see what's out there. No one has to like everything, but I think they should definitely give everything a chance. Aerosmith, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, The Rolling Stones, Van Halen, The Beatles, Bob Seger, Bob Dylan, Guns n' Roses, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, The Ramones, Bruce Springsteen... there's tons of classics out there that are worth checking out just to be a well rounded fan of music and know what influenced your particular favorites. Like I said, I don't like The Beatles, but they're responsible for all my favorite bands. So I gotta give 'em respect. :)
EDIT: Should also point out... those that get overly defensive about their music, especially if the criticism is true, make the genre look kinda silly. Now if someone's just saying "Man, they suck ass!", well, deal with them as you will, but if someone can actually give reasons why they dislike the group...especially true reasons, not opinion....really no argument there. No band is perfect, and it all depends on what areas you look for in music, _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

See! You ain't so bad off as I thought... (I love all three of those. Wearing a Gn'R shirt as I type)
Hair metal is all those 80s bands with men in makeup and big hair. Poison, Warrant, Motley Crue for a few years, Bon Jovi (hate 'em), Def Leppard... Those are the big ones. I could name a couple hundred lesser known ones, but that's no help. Guns n' Roses was glammy in appearance for awhile. Think Axl in the beginning (Welcome To the Jungle video era) and that's the look. Except with more leather, bright colors, and makeup. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Yep, hair band. One of the first hair bands. Kinda annoying when I wear a twisted sister shirt and people only know "we're not gonna take it". Yeah, I know it's cool, stop telling me already! _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

See everyone, I can play nice! Really, the problem with a message board is good natured fun between people who are familiar with each other can be taken completely the wrong way by people who haven't been around as long. Like ChrisFox. I bust his balls all the time, and if it wasn't understood that I love the guy, I'd look like a major bitch (more so than usual).
And I do give nu-metal, mtv pop punk, rap, and bubblegum pop a hard time. But I don't have anything against the people who like it, just like I expect people who don't like hair metal or classic rock or glam rock to give me crap because it's what I like.
Oh, and I'm 100% female.

Awww. I feel so wubed. :D
I don't know what to add to this thread, really. The best way (for me as of now) to find non-commercialized/independant bands/artists is deep researching on the net. It's how I found bands like The Levellers (Proves Violins and other such 'folk' instruments can be hardcore!) and Oysterband Two great punkish independant bands.
People not in the big music business want and deserve to be recognized and the net is the easiest way for them to reach hundreds of millions of people world wide. It might take a while to find something you really like, or maybe it won't, who knows? With music clips and everything you can find tons of music you never thought existed. (Yay for technology!)
As of friends liking only mainstream music, I say break away from the norm and become an individual. A drone's life is a horrible life. Now, that's not to say all mainstream music is bad or corrupt and all that, there are some genuinely talented ones out there. Just don't give in to the "You must watch, listen to, and buy 'this' in order to be cool." _________________ "I've got a sticky Darodo!"
