Jake, don't worry, it'd be optional. Just like DA has optional paid subscriptions.
EDIT: On the swag note, Denis, watcha lookin' for exactly? I assume you can make your own logo suitable for print with a simple enough font. But maybe you should come up with a standard layout idea? That could just have a few different things on them? That way we know what exactly you're looking to put on them. And just a note like I put in the info, be careful about what you put on them in the way of fanart. Most companies don't care, I know, just try to make sure it's not one of the rare ones that do. Sounds like you're planning to mass produce a few designs and send 'em out yourself, so it'd probably be easier to submit/suggest images if we knew what it was going to look like. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Paid accounts sound cool. Once I get a job I could probably pay for one, or at least make donations. Merch would be cool, too. Hmm, I think I might attempt a sketch or two of the fac logo or something, should be fun. _________________ "I've got a sticky Darodo!"

I'd do them through a third party company insted of doing it myself.
As for "watcha lookin' for exactly", I dont know. This is your idea. I'm open to suggestions. _________________ You will obey or molten silver will be poured into your ears. |

You mentioned it first. I ran with it. Provided you use something similar to 99dogs, I'll start brainstorming ideas (as Chris is) and we'll all have a little "meeting" of some sort to look 'em over? Then if we decide on one or more standard layouts (at least to start), it'd be quite simple to whip up a sample showing what's needed in the way of submissions. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Merchandise sounds like an awesome idea!
For now, just shirts would be cool n.n but I'd get mugs and stuff.
I think it'd be really cool if we could come up with an FAC mascot or something. I think it would be easier to come up with T-shirt logos and stuff with on. And then possibly in the future, depending on how things go, we might actually be able to get a plushie or figurine.
I know I'd get some! n.n
I'd like to help think of logos or something, but it'd be easier if I had some sort of idea of what we're thinking about here.
I'm guessing something anime since that's what most of the site consists of (nothing official though)
I'll start thinking  (careful..this may take a while lol) |

I tried to design an origional mascot character for the site but it never worked out as well as I hopped due to my lack of artistic skill. Guess it wasn't horrable, but it took months just to get that far and isn't good enough for logos or anything.
I'm open to others that can design somthing of that sort. _________________ You will obey or molten silver will be poured into your ears. |

Ooh I like that idea.
I think that's going to be the best way to at least get ideas. The final drawing could be designed by the winner but (if you don't think they're up to par) you could get someone else to draw it for the best quality n.n
but yeah, good idea, Pow. |

Under no circumstances will the site use Cafepress. Their image copyright policies are horrid, product quality is worse, and their clothing, while a good selection of types, is quite limited in colors (not to mention the designs flake off after about two washings). They also have very bad policies about payment. Just a bad site all around. I know it's popular, but it's something no one should be involved in. Yeah, the extra products are neat, but the red tape and "rules" they have are a major pain in the arse, especially if you ever sell anything (friends of mine were charged because they didn't sell enough).
Here's what we have so far, for those who are curious.
The store will be done through one of two sites, which are both similar (one does the neopets store). I don't know if Denis has made a decision yet, but that really doesn't matter.
Products that may be offered: Definitely a variety of shirts (styles, colors, etc. No specifics, since I don't know if Denis will choose the site I suggested or the other one, but both have several options). Possible other products are mouse pads, bags, and teddy bears wearing shirts with the design on them. Others also a possibility. I know cafepress has a ton of nifty things, but like I said, the policies are just bad, and the glitzy items don't outweigh the hassle.
When it comes to using images, a few things should be mentioned:
~ Images which are to be printed must be HUGE. That is to say, 99% of the digital art on this site cannot be used, because it was done too small. At maximum, 100 pixels will equal one inch. The bigger the better, and 150-200 dpi would be best. So if you wish to submit something you drew by hand (any part of it, lineart or the whole thing) scan it at minimum 300 pixels per inch to ensure it will be big enough. It may be troublesome to work that large if you aren't used to it (ie you don't do the crazy detailed stuff that is done at that size), but in order to be printed, it has to be. If you're doing a purely digital piece, get a ruler and estimate how big a shirt front is (because we don't know just exactly where the image will be). I'd say at least 6x12 to be safe and make it good quality even if it's shrunk. Multiply both of those numbers (or your own numbers) by 300 and make the canvas that big.
~ Fanart, by law, should not be sold, but I think all the conventions show that isn't really enforced. Simple "Fanart Central" swag with no (fan)art on them are fine, and having fanart on anything would most likely cause no problems. Very few companies/people care because it's giving them more exposure and really isn't taking any money away from them. But in the few rare cases, there will be no Pern shirts. I don't know if any fanart will eventually be put on them, but that doesn't really matter at this point.
~ I think it goes without saying that not everyone will have their ideas/images put on products. That's not to say anyone's isn't good enough, but a lot of times it just comes down to technical reasons. Another thing is a lot of printing methods (at least those that can print on dark colors) require transparent gif/png files or else there will be a background square. So on dark shirts, if there are any (probably), some images may not be of use only because there'd be a big white block around them (depends on the image and way it's being used of course)
That should cover anything that's been said elsewhere for now. The site that will be used has been decided. It's between two very similar ones, and you'll see when it's finished. Gotta have some surprises, right?
As for a mascot, I kinda like the contest idea. I assume it would be a concept contest? Whoever wins would have to realize they're making a commitment to produce various high quality pieces for print (though there's also no reason other people couldn't draw it as well...it'd be fanart ). I'd volunteer "Toby", Chris, but...and no offense to the site...he's currently in my gallery/store and I'd prefer it stay that way.
There's no reason there couldn't be several logos. Just as in the banners, almost every one uses a different font. Unless y'all are talking about a Van Halen/Aerosmith/Twisted Sister type logo that isn't exactly the name but more of a symbol/letters. Every item could have a different style representation of the site name to go along with the style/design of the shirt. I just think it's too difficult to pick one that could easily clash with some of the designs.
Phew, I'm writing novels lately. More detailed info as it's created, since Denis is the king of brief, sweeping statements. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Quiznos already took that for their new commercial. And theirs makes more sense.
I'm making diagrams showing where you can design things as I type this (ie, where you can put the designs, etc.). Should give people at least a small foundation to work from, besides just coming up with logos and mascots. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. I suppose. As soon as Denis tells me his final decision, I'll add to these all the possible items, but for now just go with this, since basic shirts are the priority.
Here's what you can go on for now, in the way of designs:
~ Designs can be printed on the front and/or back (or even offer one with the back, which costs slightly more, and one that just has the front).
~ Designs can be put full front (well, to a point, and that point is about where I marked in the diagram, give or take) or on the chest area. Anywhere in those regions. There's others, but I hesitate to put them until I know which it will be. And those are the basics, anyway.
~ Text can be added separate from the image, so don't worry about including text in the image file, unless it's a hand done font/logo type thing. Most of the standard, readable fonts are there, and it's much easier to add text separate than try to get it to work as part of the image. If you do create a design that's to be used, a good sketch along with the files should suffice.
More such as this soon. Logo/mascot, I believe, are top priority. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

IDEA!:
I have a few friends that are extremely talented in drawing, painting, what not. I was talking to them about this when the idea first came up, and depending on what info i come back to them with, i know for sure one of them (probably the best and most original) will be up to hand out some of his ideas.
He has a s**t load of art equipment and spends all his freakin time producing his own little band's music and playing with his art work. When i see him on aim i'll ask him if he's interested in coming to the boards and checking it out and maybe come up with some ideas.
Also, i can probably come up some FC logos if needed. I took a few years of mechanical and drawing and design and all i use to do was do logo's and signs for awhile. As for a mascot, eh, don't know. I've been trying to create my own original stuff lately, i've been up for days straights (i've been asked 1 to many times this week if i was on drugs <_< ) and the only tv i noticed was AS and CNN news so i didnlt fall behind in whats going on with the world. And during my exams i was drawing characters that could fight in Home movies and crap (don't ask again)
If Denis or any of the girls (or guys) would like to talk to me on aim about it further on what kind of thing i might be able to draw, just give me a buzz. Even if i'm nto around to talk, leave a message.
P.S. If we're doing merch soon, get some damn mugs of some kind, i'm always buying mugs like crazy and i know a lot of people who do. It's all in three or four products Denis, Hats, T-shirts, Mugs and Posters. Those are good start offs.
Another thing, if needed or worried about, i can always ask my boss about some stuff to make sure no one gets in any legal trouble with merch being sold (some @$$ saying FC isn't denis's or something else real stupid) yeah. |

Shirts and posters are definitely possible. Well, posters most likely not as much because it involves a different site (the one in my sig), but if there was ever confirmed demand for posters and cards, it could be done (not likely). Mugs and hats...
Here's a tentative list of what COULD be an option. All are subject to change.
PRINT
Short Sleeve Shirts
Long Sleeve Shirts
Sweat Shirts
Baby Dolls (capped and otherwise)
Hoodies
Attache Bags
Teddy Bears
EMBROIDERED (meaning probably just "Fanart Central" or "FC" or something on them)
Hooded pullovers
Quarter Zip pullovers
Denim Jackets
Fleece Lined Jackets
Caps
Teddy Bears
Mugs are currently not offered through that system, but they could be looked into at a later time, I suppose. It'd be cool. Anyway, like I said, NONE of those items up there are certain. Just ones I know COULD happen.
UPDATE after speaking to Denis:
MASCOT: There will be a contest. Look for details in an upcoming news post. Deadline will be one month with the possibility of an extension.
LOGOS: You may begin submitting logos as soon as you've finished them. Remember, they must be LARGE in order to be printed. Same 300 dpi rule applies. In order to be easily viewed, please submit a smaller "preview" to the site and have a large version saved on your computer and ready when/if it's needed. A thread will be made soon to submit them to. There will be multiple logos.
For now, things to go on the products are more important than the products themselves. So get creating, submitting, and good luck. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Awesome! n.n
They took my mascot idea and Pow's contest idea!
T_T I feel so special...
Is it "FC" or "FAC" o.o?? I've seen both used (I've gotten use to saying FAC lately) T.T I think we should designate now before we start submitting stuff cuz we might want the abbreviated word.
n.n oooh! all this business talk and stuff gives me goosebumps! I love working with this sort of thing (same with law stuff) |

I prefer FAC just because it looks better, but since "fanart" is one word, it should technically be FC. Most merchandise/logos should be the entire name (if for no other reason than advertisement purposes ). Logos/designs made out of the abbreviation, provided they still have the URL, will still be considered, of course.
It's Denis's call on FAC or FC... _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

But I agree that the full name should be used on merchandise. _________________ You will obey or molten silver will be poured into your ears. |
