well, the only thing elements lack are the pretty filters (the newbie killer). you can color CG's just fine.
I wouldn't know. The only time I used it, I couldn't find anything (I think it was an older version--it was on a school computer), and it wasn't for coloring, lol. |

I heard that the "Photoshop Elements" used to be the name of a demo program for Photoshop instead of a full-fledged coloring program it is now. that could be why. _________________ "Sarah's future makes me sad." - Benk |

There is a very limited version of photoshop I used to have that was a demo and didn't have some features like multiple undo's, layers, and some others. Photoshop LS or something like that.
But Elements/Elements II has everything you need for coloring. The outstanding people like Linda Bergkvist are those who don't use all the extras like filters. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Never mind, don't worry about it. My b-day was yesterday and Rita got me the CS2 one. It's working just fine so far, so I don't think it's faulty or anything. |

There should be a poll about which filter is the most useless.
I put dib on mosaic @_@ _________________ "Sarah's future makes me sad." - Benk |

Oh brother. I was curious about the filters and used one. My picture got so mutated... I was trying out Arlia's new Photoshop. |

But anyone who's been around digital art for twenty minutes will look at the picture and say "oh that's the cutout filter" and not see your picture at all or think the effect is "cool". That's why filters are bad. All filters. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Exactly
There's even worse out there. Anyone familiar with the stock photos that come with XP? I saw someone use that as a background. >_<
It's so funny to see a filter. ^__^

Not true! You can do wonders with many of them. The lighting effects filter is extreamy useful for text and any other texture effect you want to do. And the Lens flare can be great when used properly.

Here's an example of a filter used at its full potential

The lens flare is evil and should never ever be used period. There is no "proper" way. Go to a pro board and post anything with a computer generated lens flare, and the first crit you'll get is "remove the lens flare".
Any other filters are just minor shortcuts. They're only good when no one can tell they were used they've been so overlapped and modified, and in that case, you'd never know if someone did or didn't. But running a filter over all or part of a drawing is tacky, and that text you posted is also tacky. It looks like you just wrote some text and put a lighting filter on it, as opposed to text that had a purpose for being lit in a poster title or some such thing.
Typography is a whole other issue above and beyond filters, there's extensive courses on it. 90% of text/titles in pictures are horrible. But that's not the filter's fault, it's just the lack of knowledge on the artist's part. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Fallen is right. Lens flares are grossly over used, and filters are just a quick way of doing something that can be done better by hand. |

I don't have CS, but is there a Render category in the filter menu? That's where it is on other versions... _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

It is shabby. Because people who look at it don't see a glowing eye, they see a big ugly lens flare.
Besides the fact real lens flares are caused by sunlight entering the lens, so the only time it would be remotely appropriate (and is still ugly) would be in a painting of outer space involving the sun. It's not a magical glow, ball of fire, or shiny piece of metal. Paint it yourself, people, then it'll look correct and not lazy.
Same goes for all other filters (aside from minor correction ones like sharpen, etc.) _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

I hate it when people use the lens flare effect. It's pretty ugly, if you ask me. Also because it's abused a lot in amateur cg works. :(
I don't use a lot of my Paintshop Pro, but I'd never use the effect tools anyway. No matter what type of picture I'm working with, I'll just use it to adjust the colours/brightness/saturation; just basic things to clean the scan up if it's dirty or too dark. If I'm colouring, I'll just use the paintbrush and that's about it.
I mean, really now. If I wanted my art to look like it was painted on a brick wall, I'd go out and paint on a brick wall, then take a picture of it. It doesn't look fake that way. o_O; _________________

I find "grain" maker helpful when I scrubbed the watercolor paper enough to make them disappear in the first place, but that's where the convinience ends. _________________ "Sarah's future makes me sad." - Benk |

Well, since this thread is still alive and kicking, I might as well ask. In one of the tutorials, it said you can find lost of different shades of the same coloring for shading and light by using the magic wand tool. Well I tried, and all that happened was the color got selected and that was about it. |
