Aerosmith V.s Kiss

I just watch VH1's Top 100 Greatest Rock Bands of All Time and for the most part, I thought it was a pretty accurate countdown except for one thing.

11. Aerosmith
10. KISS

See I don't agree with that. Aerosmith has more talent and skill than KISS ever had. Its like saying that you can be sucessful as long as you have a pretty good gig going despite how talented you are. Plus Aerosmith is still rocking hard after like thirty some-odd years. KISS is doing shows but they're like not nearly as large or as entertaining as an Aerosmith concert. Steve Tyler does not need makeup or flames or lame gimmicks to make his concerts fascinating and hard core. He is a rock god and not only does he know it but he frequently flaunts it on stage. Him and Joe Perry are always all over the stage giving audiences a show they won't ever forget. So Gene Simmons can open a blood packet with his teeth, big deal. Steve Tyler can do handstands on stage while holding the ending to note to Love in an Elevator.

My point is that I believe that Aerosmith wasn't really given the credit they deserved. I understand that GnR beat them and that Nirvana beat then and even that Metallica beat them but for them to lose a spot in the Top Ten by KISS is just shameful. Its not right. Sad

KISS has the legend factor going for them. It's why they beat Aerosmith. The four characters, the theatrics, the extreme use of showmanship combined with rock n' roll. Aerosmith has that, but nowhere near the level KISS does. If you took around a picture of Steve, a lot of people would have no idea who he is, but most people recognize the KISS makeup. They'd never recognize Gene himself, but the makeup is an icon.

Aerosmith is by far a better band and has lasted better than KISS (who had horrible concert attendance if you take giveaway and reduced price tickets out of it), but as far as "greatest artists of hard rock", KISS has the legend factor over them. I don't agree with a lot of the ratings, but that's their reasoning.

Also, you have to remember that particular list is created by the artists themselves. They submitted their list of 100 greatest bands, then the votes were counted to make the lists. KISS have been around so long that they're the reason a lot of those bands started in rock. If you look at interviews with bands from the past 20 years, KISS was the first concert of a lot of them. So they rate them highly.

Buy some stage blood and grease paint and make 'em join a tribute band. Make money with it.
