Orgy - meaning the band Orgy - what do you think of them?

I just picked up their new CD 'Punk Statik Paranoia' and I have to say, I don't like it nearly as much as the others. There old stuff had more of it's own vibe to it. Now, it's just all trying to fit in with this new rebel punk vibe it seems.

From the hits from Candy Ass (Blue Monday, and Stitches being them) and the hits from Vapor Transmission (Fiction and Opticon) I dare you to listen to Pure, Vague or The Obvious to see just how much they've changed.

They aren't the pretty boy make up people anymore. I watched Vague, and they look nothing like they did before. Jay Gordon (vocals) looks nothing like he did when he wore make up!:

To this:

Not only that, but compare Amir (next to Jay in that picture) to the old him:

- Them from Candy Ass

- Them now

I'm so saddened by this, they used to be a good group, I don't their new stuff very much.

So, what do you think of them? Do you like their new vibe of music? Do you question why they would suddenly change?

And if you don't know them, then look at some stuff of them and see if you want.

I was never a fan of their old stuff, but I really don't like the new at all. It's very generic.

Which seems to be happening to a lot of groups from around that time. In some ways it can be attributed to growing up. Bands in their mid thirties n' forties will look silly in bright makeup and big hair, just as that style may not apply to them anymore. They mature and grow out of that "loud youthful expression".

Other bands from the mid to late nineties have done the same, evolving from the pseudo-glam image to a more "normal" appearance. That's fine if the spirit and attitude are the same, but in Orgy's case, I don't think it is. 6-7 years isn't that long, and in their case it just sounds like...boredom. It's very pop and a watered down version of what they used to do. I didn't really like it, but at least it was somewhat unique. The new stuff is just a regular pop rock song.

I'm sure they may get some success by appealing to new little sheep fans (and the obligatory blind love fans), but... bleh. Horrible.

I think they changed because not a lot of people knew them well, so I think they thought by changing their music style into pop/rock songs, they'd get more people to listen to them.

Not many of them are really all that old. I know Jay is 39 and turning 40 January 13th of 2006, but still. Now they sound like every other band trying to fit in. Green Day too, they're old stuff was good, but now it's all.. about trying to fit in with the 'punks' and rebels.

You're right, 6-7 years isn't that long, and the attitude and spirit isn't the same. I'd understand if they grew out of the glam style and into just looking normal, and still made the same unique sort of styled music, but to just changed everything around like they did in the 4 years they hadn't released a CD was horrible. I thought after they had left the company to make their own, they had all broken up.

I'm angry with them now. To blow off the true fans who liked their style and taste from the first two CD's just to fit it, sicken's me.

Yep. The reason I said 6-7 years isn't that long is there's similar bands from '94-'95 who started off with the big image and have since toned it down, but that's understandable when they're 11 years older. Orgy haven't come that far, but man have they changed.

Definitely a popularity stunt. And they may very well get that popularity. The very definition of sell outs, too bad the term has been cheapened by teenyboppers throwing it at their favorite pop punk bands when they realize what they are.

I think that's probably why they did it. Popularity stunt. People probably forgot about them in the last 4 years, and thinking that changing it will get them popular is probably true. They'll probably get fans who hadn't even heard their old stuff before and only loves them because they're hot.

I hope they crash and burn, then maybe they'll go back to the old style.

Yes, fiery doom to Orgy. May Orgy's new "style" fail miserably and may no other bands from that era go the way of painful conformity for popularity with 13-year-old mallrats. Sad

Yeah, thus why I threw in the mallrats part. To separate decent 13-year-olds from the masses of screaming TRL sign-holders.

Yeah.

What ever happened tro MTV being rock? That's what I want to know, when they actually played bands like Motley Crue, Aerosmith, Nine Inch Nails, Orgy, etc.

When did they change? I haven't watched MTV in a long ass time, so that's why I'm wondering.

Now, MTV is all about girls wearing pratically nothing, and shaking their asses, like we need to see that.

In the mid to early nineties. I'll give you the short story version. Basically the people who originally created MTV in the very early 80s had a great idea and real passion for what they were doing. They wanted to take all the acts that had a great visual show and give them an outlet to show that with the songs. That's why the glam bands did so well, they didn't create the image for the videos, the videos were just very well suited for featuring their image and performance.

Then by the early-mid nineties, the original staff were getting old and no longer "hip" and "cool", so they were replaced with a new staff that was more "in tune with what the youth wanted to see". Unfortunately, these people didn't care at all about music or new ways to feature it, they just wanted to make money. They did know what kids would watch and that's why you have Real World, Road Rules, Cribs, and all these other horrible shows that do nothing for music. They just make money.

So that's why MTV doesn't play music anymore. Let alone good music. Their current staff wants to make as much money as they can in the shortest amount of time, and that means crappy throw away pop acts. Sad

Really? Early 90's?

I remember watching an Orgy video (Stitches) in 98-99ish, I think, and that was the last time I watched MTV, so I'm surprised to hear that they stopped in early 90's.

Then again, what Orgy was doing was the theme going on at the time.

Yeah, it sucks that they changed it. :(

Don't they have, like, BET to play all that s**t (Not saying it doesn't take talent, it doesn't appeal to my taste in music, hence, why I call it s**t) to show girls shaking their asses and guys talking about getting laid?

VH1, another channel I haven't watched, I know it shows some of the older stuff, but not like, video's or anything.

What the hell is MTV2 for then!? We need our rock music back on MTV damn it! Grr! Sad

Orgy was played 'cause they were within the boundaries of what was popular at the time. Placebo was minorly well received in the states. Jane's Addiction and those sorts of image-heavy bands had already done well earlier. Orgy came out before all that died off.

MTV used to play videos all the time. By '99, they played them only in select blocks, and now they only play them with irritating commentary or at 3am.

VH1 has slowly gone the same way. I posted an article a year or two ago that had quotes from the people in charge saying their studies showed people wanted more programming like "I Love The 80s". Nostalgia. So now they have I Love The ____, When ____ Ruled The World, Surreal Life, washed up Celebrity Weight Loss, all those kinds of shows with no videos till 1am.

FUSE is the best option right now. VH1 Classic is ok, and all the various MTV channels are just garbage. FUSE will soon be just as bad, but then another channel you have to pay for will turn up, I'm sure.
