First off, if you are planning to drive, go on the left side XD. And if you go into an urban area, the houses have like no yards because of the limited space there...and people travel by bicycles a lot....just flinging random stuff at you XP

You need to take your shoes off when entering a house. Where you take your shoes off is named the Genkan. You then put on interior shoes.

You sit in seiza position. It's a bit of an uncomfortable position for european people but fairly normal for japanese people. the seiza position is simple. You kneel.
here's a seiza pose pic----------

don't confuse her gray. Grr! well, besides that, you have to be polite to everyone (which is why we consider american barbarians, everyone thinks you guys are ill-mannered. Not me personally, but eh, I think my friend might) never stick your chopsticks directly straight down into your rice, since that's only at funerals. uh oh, gotta go, more later.

I wish I could go to Japan too! If the driver is at the left then it's not a problem. Here in Canada it's the same! Razz

I would seriously reccomend going, I went last summer with my friend and I had maybe the best time in my life. The language barrier really isn't a huge problem, as long as you know a little bit, oh and the food is just to die for! If you end up going, look for Curry Udon!

you should at least take a quick Japanese lesson. While it's true English is spoken over here (Duh, I speak it and I'm Japanese) only people with extecsive learning can speak it fluently...hey, that fits my description! heh, sorry, anyways, it would help if you had friends over there who speak Japanese (like Mimi, who taught me all the stuff I needed to know to get around in Japan)

yes that's very nice. One more thing about Japan. You don't have to worry about fights or anything. Everyone there is very well mannered. You can leave a suvoneir bag with 10000 yen in it and everything'll still be there, that's how behaved everyone has to be. It's just something you grow up learning so, it's kind of implanted in your brain to be polite.

very har. (don't know WHAT documentary you were reading btw. Where I live, everyone is very well behaved. Maybe you were reading about other place than here) The number of jobs is limited, because there's limited space. You have to work hard to make enough money. Many people live together. I live over in the USA sometimes, which is where my parents work, and it's much easier to find jobs in the US apparently.
