It makes them feel different and unique. Just like all the kids that find the smallest, usually shittiest little bands they can and put patches all over their backpack n' write the names in sharpie. "Oh, I don't like ___, I only like underground bands like ____" Good for you, cupcake.
Some bands do turn to crap when they get popular because they do things just to stay popular. They put out "safe" albums that are based on the current trends in order to sell. But I'm not familiar with Dir En Grey, so I dunno if that's the case.
