It makes them feel different and unique. Just like all the kids that find the smallest, usually shittiest little bands they can and put patches all over their backpack n' write the names in sharpie. "Oh, I don't like ___, I only like underground bands like ____" Good for you, cupcake.

Some bands do turn to crap when they get popular because they do things just to stay popular. They put out "safe" albums that are based on the current trends in order to sell. But I'm not familiar with Dir En Grey, so I dunno if that's the case. If it's just because they aren't "the underground band" anymore, that's lame, but if they're not what they used to be, then it's understandable.

i think its mostly about everyone turning it into a trend. You know what i mean? A lot of the "fans" turned it to crap because they are all fangirlish about. Wich makes ones favorite good band turn to crap. They don't want anything to do with it since everyone killed it. Thats why i like bands that hardly anypeaople know. And don't fangirl about. Like kidneythieves. They are good and i like them. And within temptation. She has an amazing voice and sings about very spiritual stuff. I don't know about this band thouhg. Haven't really heard the music. but i have seen many people fangirl over it.
