I discover this forum : you know, the one that you can offer your services, but for cash ? what do you think about it ? a good or a bad thing ? I'm not for, but not really against. Anyway, I offer my services for free, I don't care about the cash. It's a choice to pay the artists, but isn't that... a little strange ? drawing for cash now ? ya... The other forum where it's us that propose cash, it's less stanger. but anyway ? are you for or against ? |

Commissions are extremely common. Many people make their living from it. Requests are fine, but some of us need to eat. If you just draw for fun and are happy to offer to do it for free, that's great, but almost all the high quality artists are paid.
Personally, I can't afford to work for free anymore. I took a couple requests when I first joined FAC, but commissions are my full time job right now until the fall. Art is no different than anything else. Would you expect a plumber to fix your sink for free just because they enjoyed their job? Or to do it for the fun of plumbing?
It's a huge misconception that all artists should be happy to work for free just because they enjoy drawing, and it's part of what keeps us at the bottom of the food chain. Other people don't understand how much work it really is and how many long hours go into a piece. Like we should do it for free just for the fun of it. Sure it's fun, but it's work, and if you want the best quality you should be willing to pay for it. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Usually people in that thread who are offering commissions will mail out the original work as opposed to just scanning it for others to view. It's like buying a fine piece of art rather than asking someone to create a sketch of your OC. _________________ |

Yep. Or if it's digital n' the like, send a very large file for that person to print as they like. You're basically purchasing a piece to hang on your wall instead of just asking for a quick sketch of your original character. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. You're all true, art become a job with the time. I always dream to sing or to do some anime series and I think I would like to be paid... but now I think I can stay to the step to give my pic freely ! I'm young (15) and for now, the cash doesn't really interest me. |

I have a related curiosity: The "Commissions Wanted" area -- to my knowledge, there have never (at least not as of yet) been any topics about "I'll pay someone to make this", all commissions threads I've ever seen are "Artist for Hire" / "Taking commissions" type topics. Hmm.... _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

I didn't exactly expect it to pick up right away. It will take awhile. And those who create topics taking commisions.. shouldn't expect any replies right off the bat. I think as the site grows, and possibly attracts a variety of different artists it will be more useful. _________________ |
