Another interestingly simple subject to talk about. We know how art supplies like pencils, crayons, and paints come in various pack sizes, like 8, 12, 24, 36 (etc.) colors to a set. Dedicated art supply stores also sell them individually by color, and there can be literally hundreds of colors to choose from.

So the quesion is thus: How many colors do you have at your disposal? Do you use juts single 'sets' of colors at a time or do you mix it up with a few extra individual colors as well?

Furthermore, what size of pallete do you think is the best for the average artist to have? A large size palette its freedom of choice, or a smaller size palette to mandate blending and experimentation?

Me and when I use colored pencils, I have a total of about 26-27 hues available -- a standard set of 24 colors, an ebony pencil, plus a colorless blender (which I sometimes use lieu of white), and of course the eraser. Although, I seem to rely on the standard 12 colors a lot more often than the intermediate shades that come in the 24-set....

Paintwise, 6 colours plus black and white. So eight tubes of paint altogether.

Because people know I like painting I sometimes get given sets with more colours in, and I'll use them when I'm feeling lazy, but when it comes to pieces I care about I go back to the eight.

I'd recommend artists start with smaller palettes. It's easier to understand how colours work when you have experience mixing them yourself, and you're more likely to get happy accidents Smile

I only use the five basic colors for painting: white, black, red, yellow, and blue. The sad thing is, a lot of my paintings turn out really dark. Maybe I need a different brand.

I mostly use prismacolors and for that have a set of 48 which I got for christmas two years ago. Besides that I also have a plastic box where I can have at any time between 15-30 other colors that I buy loose in the stores because the look interesting.

Thogh it's not really that neccisarry to have so many colors. Like I said I've had that 48 box for a while now and I haven't even used many of the colors yet, while ohers I've used up and replace 5 or 6 times. 0.o

An ebony pencil is darker than a normal pencil, although not quite as dark as "Black".

...

Gouache, 13 tubes.
Prismacolor pencils, 75
Pastel pencils, 40
Watercolor pencils, 45
Prismacolor markers, 107
Holbein watercolor, 13
Artisan oil, 6 tubes, +6 paintsticks

It might seem as if I have too much for my skill level... but I collect them like some people collet stamps.

I use a 72 (!) ArtistColorPencil Set.. yep, a lot colors... but these are special ones with less wax, which means they are harder to mix but easy to blend with the special blender in its set. I rarely use all these on one pic but I need a lot specially making pics of cars and other technical stuff with reflections. Besides that I use 3 colortypes of Graphite which is far enough... ^_^

I've occasionally considered getting the 48-color set of Crayolas (50, if you include the bonus metallic gold/silver), but I have issues... I don't know if I can seriously handle that many hues. Laughing I mean, as much as I could use some darker shades like Forest Green or Navy Blue, I already have enough to mix most of the shades I use....

in my early life i had 6 heliographic inks for painting, red, green, blue, yellow, black and white, and made the rest of the colors by convining and adding water... then i got photoshop and i buy my scanner and dumped all of them... xD

You monster! Surprised

I'm a traditional medium-nut, I don't think I'll ever use CG to color my pics. although sometimes I used photoshop more than the actual medium to "make it better" after a scan.

I gave up on all pencil-mediums, I have a HUGE sets of artist pencils (pastel, watercolor, wax...) that I spent something like 200 dollars on for the sheer collection that I never use, I'm thinking of giving them out or selling them...

... actually, that would make a good contest prize...

well... thanks... xD

my brothers didn't care about my inks... that cost me a bunch by the way... and i didn't know anyone that wanted theme, and added the fact that i wasn't very good at small brush painting(is brush the correct word by the way?) and those inks really messed some of my drawings... i just had to dump them... nothing personal.

i alwais liked CG images and that's what i am aiming for, also i like 3D cellshaded images but my pc dies after the first frame... xD

traditional media is good, but "for me" computer generated is better, thats just my opinion, :D

ah, and about the contest, do it!, that would be great for the winner Very Happy

I'd love to try out drawing inks from Winsor&Newton... but I don't see how it will be very different from watercolor... a medium shunned by me.

and it's not even lightfast Sad not so much deal if you scan, but it's not framing-friendly...

I need more colors in my gouache line (have only 13 tubes)... but those papers look so nice... X_X
