I tried to find the old concert review thread, but I don't remember what it was called. So screw it, it was old anyway. Feel free to tack on your show reviews to this thread, provided they're current.

Motley Crue
Reno, Nevada
March 25th

Flew in for the day and just got back from the airport. I'm sore, deaf, and have no voice. The Crue will rock your ass off. Highlights, general comments, and amusing sidenotes following...

Pre-Show
Flew in, checked into Circus Circus (fuck you, I love that place, old and cheap or not), and walked the strip for a little while. Went back and won some stuffed animals for an hour or so. I am the dart queen, by the way. Didn't miss a single shot. Cool Anyway, there was a booth doing airbrushed tattoos, so I had them put "Crue" on my lower back in black and red Old English text. Yes, I know the location is horribly cliche. But it was the only place appropriate to get it in public. But it kicks ass, and I'm still wishing it was real ink. I'll try to get a picture before it fades in the next week or so.

Went over the to the venue around 6:30pm to avoid standing in line. The town was crawling with people in Motley merch. Emptied my pockets, was frisked, and finally made it inside. Security's a pain in the ass, but it beats anything happening to four of my favorite boys. Found my seat, sat down, and waited. Lucky for me a ridiculously chatty woman had the seat next to us, and apparently the fact I flew from Oregon to Reno is going to be her "story she can tell when talking about the concert!". Er...ok.

The Show
Roughly an hour and fifteen minutes later, they hit the lights n' got started. The first is a claymation video of the four talking about an asteroid that's gonna destroy the earth. It's pretty fuckin' funny. Especially Tommy. The movie ends with them going to do "the last rock concert before the end of the world".

Ho-ly Fuck. The Crue are back. From the first song to the last, they're on top of their game.

Vince was hitting the high notes above and beyond, and his pitch was pretty spot on all night. He's back to not singing all the words and leaving the audience to sing sections of the chorus quite a bit, but it didn't hurt the show any. It's better than he's been doing the last decade. His hair is back to blonde (phew), and he's lookin' in pretty good shape. Didn't run out of breath too badly at all, and he was lookin' damn good.

Nikki...is Nikki. Put a couple greasepaint stripes on his cheeks and you'd swear it was the same Nik from the mid 80s. He was totally into it all night, spent most of the first few songs flipping off the audience, and doing some full body headbanging. Covered all the stage, back n' forth and back n' forth... And his playing was great.

Mick is looking a lot better. A lot. He moved around a surprising amount. Not fast, mind you, but then he never has. But he made it to both sides of the stage and worked the audience much more than he was at the start of the tour. And good god can that man play. Surprised It's insane.

Tommy is as energetic as ever. He puts his full body into his drumming, and it's amazing he's held up as good as he has. His drum solo was...different. I'm not a big drum solo fan, but his flying one wasn't bad. They hooked him up to a harness and flew him back and forth between two drumsets suspended at each side of the stage. When I first heard about it, it sounded kinda cool, and it is. Better than a regular drum solo, anyway. I still love his full back tattoo.

Overall, they were just incredible, and I'm hard to really impress. Their stage show was all carnival themed, obviously, with scantily clad girls doing acrobatics, fire breathing, lesbian activities... Their use of the screens was really good. They had a big screen in the middle above the stage, and a smaller one to each side. I'm not a big fan of bands using the screens the whole time to display what the band is doing, 'cause I always end up torn between looking at the screen or at the stage. But they had a nice balance of not using them at all, doing video of the show, or little video clips/designs that went with the song. During Girls, Girls, Girls they had a ton of softcore porn clips running. So many boobs. Razz

It was absolutely packed, not an empty seat in the place. If there was, it was because the person moved into the aisle or was trying to get closer.

Side Notes

Halfway through the show they have a ten minute intermission where they play a rather...odd movie. It's a montage of old horror movie gore moments (exploding heads, monsters, etc.), funny accidents (kids crashing on bikes, etc.), funny porn (puppet money shot facial), and completely random clips (a woman holding her cat's paws, making it play piano). It made the time pass quick, it was just...utterly weird.

Their stage banter was top notch. I hate it when bands either don't talk at all, and just run through their set like there's no audience there, or when they yap on and on and are boring. There was a lot of "I can't hear you, motherfuckers!" stuff and comments about the audience/show. Making the audience guess the song when they played Red Hot and On With The Show and such.

The titty cam broke. Sad At each show, they bring up the lights, and Tommy takes a video camera and tells girls to whip out their boobs. It didn't work last night, so he just walked around the stage and admired the goods on his own. It was so damn funny.

Tommy: *pointing at each girl* Yes! Yes! Uh huh! Damn! Whoa, I need to see those again....wow! Anyone have some fuckin' hardware! Oh, yeah! Haha! *goes back to his drum riser n' Vince comes back to start the next song* Sixx, I think we're gonna have to buy a new titty cam, dude.
Nikki: That sucks, man.
Vince: *getting ready to start the next song* Sixx, man, look at these crazy fuckers! They're still getting their titties out.
Nikki: The buses are out back, ladies, so help yourself.

Great fun. I now have four months to ponder, with my much improved seats in July, whether I will give in to the temptation of the titty cam. Uneasy

Hmm...what else. Their merch really couldn't be better (well, unless it was cheaper, I suppose). I held off until July when I can get together more money...I hope.

Really it's just a crazy show, and if there's any way to can make it to one of the dates, GO. Crap seats or front row, it's still awesome, and they'll blow you away.

Here's a setlist, although not in order:

Shout At The Devil
Too Fast For Love
On with the show
Too Young to Fall In Love
Looks That Kill
Red Hot
Live Wire
10 Seconds To Love
Louder Than Hell
Medley of Glitter/Without You/Home Sweet Home (the whole song)
Dr Feelgood
Kickstart My Heart
Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)
Primal Scream
Same Ol Situation
If I Die Tomorrow
Sick Love Song
Girls Girls Girls
Wild Side
Helter Skelter
Anarchy In The UK

Alright, I don't care if my birthday is three months after they came to Hartford, I want to go. Surprised It sounds amazing. Who would've thought that the Crue was back in their game? Don't know how my dad would react to the cam. Funny as hell though. Laughing

Definitely go see them if there's any way possible.

I didn't see any kids there, even though there was no age restriction on the show. If there were any, I'm sure some parents were surprised! All the boobs and stuff...meh, it's the Crue. Tommy said in an online chat in response to a question about obscenity "we're the Crue. We're the same as we've always been."

And after the titty cam, Vince went on to say "Ya know, every night we do that bit, just because sometime somewhere someone told us not to. And that's what the Crue's about! Can I get a 'fuck yeah'?!" Laughing

Anyway, Nikki details. His hair is roughly shoulder length, and as far as I could tell it's all black again. Has that slight "pineapple" cut with shorter layers on top. The first half of the show, he was wearing a red sleeveless shirt and black pants. Second half, he changed to a black sleeveless shirt. Sadly most of his tattoos stayed covered. Sad Except the ones on his arms, obviously. I'm not sure if he was spitting water or throwing water at the audience, but there was some definite moisture coming from his direction at the crowd. Razz

Someone threw what looked like a plastic bag at him, and it landed just about right on top of his head and drifted down the back of his neck. Someone else threw a cup or card or something like that and hit him again. I only mention it because he ignored it, as he hasn't always done in the past. Thrown bass incident, anyone?

Nikki *right before the titty cam*: Have y'all made some movies? I know I have. But you have right here the video king. *as Tommy is walking up*
Tommy: Let's get some light in here. I wanna see you guys. Yeah! Now, who's got some titties?

Nikki: You guys think you're oldschool? You think you're oldschool? Well then here's a test. The whole night's gonna be a big fuckin' test to see just how big a Crue fan you are. Ready? When I say 'Red' you say (hot) ! Red! .... Red! .... RED! .... RED HOT!

It'd be interesting to hear him sing something live, besides background chorus. His voice sounds quite nice.

EDIT: oh! And he smashed a bass. Very Happy Before the encore, he kept teasing the audience, acting like he was about to smash it then stopping at the last minute. He waited until everyone was loud enough, then smashed it to hell.
But he's a married man so how can he invite all those women back to the van?
.... ....

Actually, I've barely heard anything about Nikki misbehaving. Their security is tighter than I've seen in a long time. All their buses and trucks were surrounded by security and police. No one was gettin' near any of 'em without proper identification and a pass. Although that didn't stop several chicks from standing around waiting, I've never cared for the "Nikki! Nikki! *jump jump wave* Nikki! *titty flash* Nikki, can I come on the bus?!" look.

I could see all their trucks from the hotel room, and the crew got everything down and on the road in lightning speed. Surprised For how much equipment they had, the trucks pulled out in about an hour.

Either you people don't go see live music ( Sad ), or you're all too lazy to write anything down. But since I enjoy reading about other people's experiences, good or bad, I shall keep writing down mine with the assumption there's someone else out there like me.

Velvet Revolver
April 21st
Portland, OR

Pre-Show

I love and hate general admission shows. On one hand, an awesome spot for $40 isn't half bad (a third of what I normally pay), but it also means showing up freakishly early and fighting for a spot once you're inside. Anyway, my friend and I got there three hours early, and there were only about 15 people ahead of us in line (some of which had been there since 9am Surprised ). Wait wait wait...

Go inside, frisked, bathroom stop, buy a t-shirt, and rush inside to claim my territory. I ended up just slightly to the right of center, in what we termed "row one and a half". I was like half between two guys. Close to show time, two young girls slipped up front next to me and stood behind the guy, who eventually turned around and offered them his spot (no idea where he went). A big group of girls and a couple guys shoved their way up behind them and were not-so-quietly talking about how they'd push up front once the show started (I fuckin' hate that!), so the one girl asked me to move forward and fill in the little bit of extra space, so they wouldn't have room. Smile

More standing, more waiting, squished against the barricade. But front row is front row, who needs comfort.

Openers

Hoobastank suck ass. Suck suck suck suck suck. I had more fun watching security deal with people smoking than I did watching their painful set. Every song sounded identical with slightly different words, and the singer was irritating to watch. What's with the drunken stumble? Someone answer that, 'cause it looked like he was going to pass out half the time. And his faces were not "cool rock star expressions". More like "I'm off my meds, weeeee!" or "Dammit, I knew I should've used the bathroom before going on...."

Aside from the singer's ridiculous performance, the bass player was beyond dull. No emotion, barely any movement. Didn't see much of the drummer (cymbal in the way). The guitarist was rather hot and had a good stage presence, but he kept doing this gay move of lifting up the body of his guitar and holding it near his shoulder. But that was the only time I even faked interest, when he was in front of me.

Pure crap. As much as I understand these kinds of bands (Crue, etc.) taking out contemporary openers, they should be able to do better than that. . . . .

The Show (most important part of course)

Velvet. Revolver. Kicks. Ass. These guys can do no wrong. Well, they can, but their wrongs are still kinda good. All of them were great, Duff and Slash especially. Scott's vocals were a bit off at times, but that's just pretty much how he performs live. He had it together for the slow songs, it was just the really upbeat ones that ended up more of a scream than the studio versions.

If anyone needed proof of Duff's bass playing skills, be four feet in front of him during Set Me Free. WTF? Slash's solos were as brilliant as ever, and a lot of them were right in front of where I was standing. Here's a tip to anyone who wants to get a great show. Stand with chicks. The prettier the better. If you are a relatively pretty chick, great, but there's strength in numbers. I happened to be right with about 10 decently attractive young girls, and guess what side got the most attention. Laughing

Anyway, highlights, let's see... Scott did a lovely little run through the space between the barricade and the stage, over around to the right side of the floor audience. My fingers touched his arm, so there's my brush with greatness. Razz They did two encores, of two songs each. The last song was an extended version of Slither with a long intro.

They played several Guns and STP songs. Two STP tunes (don't know the names) and three Gn'R songs if I'm remembering correctly. Their versions of Mr. Brownstone and It's So Easy were pretty good. I dunno, they have every right to do them with 3/5 of Guns in the band, but it's just not the same with Scott on vocals. If I'd never heard the originals they would have been fine, but Scott's style is so different from Axl's that it's hard to forget. They also did a really pumped up version of Used to Love Her. That was great for what it was. It lost something the original had, with the ridiculously cheerful music, but I wasn't complainin' to get to hear that song live. Smile

With only one album out, it's understandable for them to play other songs as well. And I like that they don't go for the huge hits. Seeing Duff and Slash play them isn't a bad alternative, just a downer that Axl isn't there.

That aside, here's the required visual review. If you're a straight male or a female that doesn't give a shit what they look like, skip the next paragraph. Fan service for those who don't get to go.

Duff...is sex on two legs. As soon as he took his jacket and shirt off, my coherent thought stopped for the remainder of the night. Perfect, tan, toned but not gym bunny body...all hot n' sweaty... with those low (low) pants ... That memory will keep me happy for a very long time. As painful as it was to keep my spot (see below), having Duff stare right at you with that smirk four feet away makes it all worth it. Same goes for Slash. I was technically on his side in front of his mic, but they ran back and forth the whole time. Funny thing is, even so close, most of the time you couldn't see his face 'cause it was shielded by his hair. Laughing For those concerned with fashion, he was wearing brown leather pants. Scott is skinny, what else do you need to know? He's either gained weight or just photographs really thin, though. Anyone really care what Dave looked like? No? Ok then. Matt was Matt. Look at a photo and he looks the same. Duff's hair is lovely when it gets all messed up.

The Downsides (as there always is...)

I've been to too many hair metal shows in the last year. Bowie, Poison/KISS, Crue, etc. are all mostly attended by 35-50 year old people who want to relive their childhood. Sure, they get drunk and excited, but they're still remotely polite. VR attracts a whole different crowd of heavy metal/grunge-loving psychos who want nothing more than to trample you and leave you for dead. Hoobastank was relatively comfortable, but as soon as VR took the stage, I was clinging to my 8 inches of railing for dear life. I'll have a ton of bruises tomorrow, but a few people will have lovely elbow shaped ones from me for getting overly aggressive. Grr! I have never seen the enjoyment in pushing against people as hard as you can, so the people in the front can barely breathe. There's no more room, leave your ass where it is, and stop shoving. <_< The poor girl next to me was a good 8 inches shorter than me and was smothered. But as I said, singing along to Big Machine with Duff a few feet away makes it well worth the pain.

...When did the trend of throwing bottles of water/other beverages start? Throwing drumsticks and picks is one thing, but both Hoobastank and VR had way more bottles than they needed and threw them all to the audience (including the ones they were drinking from, I could have had a Duff spit museum, add it to a swab of my arm where he kept flipping his hair and sending little sweat droplets onto the front row... I know, it's disgusting, I'm showering after typing this Laughing But I could still have a McKagan bodily fluids exhibit). I'm sure a lot of people are glad for free drinks, but a heavy bottle of water is not what I want flying towards my head. Surprised Nothing hit me, it was just a bit irritating to have people scrambling all over, stepping on you, to catch a generic bottle of water with Scott's fingerprints on it. "Omg he touched that!"

Other than that, though, it was great, and those are minor issues. Slash had his little boy there. He was carrying him around about 45 minutes before showtime and peaked through a side door. Then his son and some woman were getting ready to watch the show from the side of the stage, and his kid kept wandering around the stage waving at everyone. They gave him a megaphone n' he just yelled nonsense. Very cute, looks just like Slash.

I think that's all. I'd give a setlist, but it's pretty straightforward with only a debut album. Pretty much all of Contraband, except a few songs, and those Gn'R/STP ones. If you get a chance, GO. You don't need to be trampled right up front, my friend moved off to the side in the bowl area and enjoyed it plenty.

Now, I'm going to go shower and try to sleep. So much adrenaline and happy Duff memories.

I wish I were you. Sad And that's not just to tittie flash Sixx. B)

Loved reading the concert reviews; at least it's something different. Sounds like you had a lot of fun. Too bad Pleymo and Luixtis aren't touring in Europe anymore, I'd totally fly out to see them. Sad

Nikki Sixx or our Sixx? Or Both? Razz I'm leaning more and more towards the side of flashing the titty cam in July. Screw the fact my folks will be there as well, nothin' they haven't walked in on before ( <_< ).

I hate it when groups don't even play in your country. Probably a slightly smaller issue for European countries, where it takes the same amount of time to drive across the border as it does to cross one state here. Laughing But it still annoys me that both Placebo and Hanoi Rocks don't have US dates. Hanoi might later, but they always end up cancelled. Closest I could get to Placebo would be Mexico City a few days ago. Sad

Local bands, big groups, washed up groups, don't care. Someone write down your concert reviews for those of us who don't get to go. :(

EDIT: I was informed by a friend who stayed further back last night that I got a lot of screen time. Laughing They had two guys running around with cameras, streaming the show onto a screen at each side of the stage (which I couldn't see from where I was). I dunno why I find that funny. If I wasn't so smashed, I could've flashed Duff/the camera. Sad

Sounds like an amazing concert fallen. Damn, I'm happy for you and jealous at the same time. Razz You must've been in pure ectasy there.

I'm a concert virgin still. Whether or not I'll get to review a Crue concert depends on where they tour in the fall. And so far it doesn't look like they'll be near me. Sad

Ecstasy indeed. Duff gets me all hot n' tingly. The friend I went with had never been to a rock concert before (just Joan Osborne, N'Sync with her cousin, and The Wiggles with her younger cousins Laughing ). She watched the first few songs from near the front with me, then moved off to the side to escape the crushing. I didn't see them, but apparently most if not all the wives were there. Perla and little London were, and several blondes were watching from the side.

A pity.

I want to see them again so badly now, though. Sad No chance. Not on this tour. At least if they stay together, I'll get another chance next year. And if they break up, I'll catch whatever solo project Duff starts up again.

I knew London was going to look just like his old man. Very Happy That is really cute especially for a rock concert. Laughing

Is this tour almost over?

I wanna see Duff's little girl (Grace) these days. All the pictures I've ever seen are years old.

How old would she be now? I bet she's really pretty. I mean, there is no logical reason for her to be ugly with the parents she has. Very Happy So I guess the familes tour with the band sometimes. Thats cute. Razz

Big groups can afford to tour comfortably with family. Aerosmith does it a lot.

Grace will be turning 8 in August. May Marie will be turning five in July.

RED WHITE & FUCKIN' CRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUEEEE YEEAAAAAAAHH!H!!11

Okay.. So.. I've seen a few big bands so far..
~My ranking of best SHOW goes;

1) Mtley Cre
2) Slipknot
3) Queen (with Paul Rodgers)
4) maybe Foo Fighters or Chilis.
5) Papa Roach (Don't ask.. the comedy was good though)

Okay.. so.. The first band; The Black Velvets were pretty gosh-darned good. Scousers too Wink Nice little warm up for the Crue but low and behold, there was another band to support which we forgot about. WOW what a let-down. Big time. They hit a nicely riffed-tune for thier first song and every other song sounded just the same. Unless.. it was one song they played.. I duno.

THEN.. wahaha.. The motherfuckin' CRUE enter.. With a bang and a scream and a What-the-f**k-is-goin'-on they came roaring onto the stage with Too Fast For Love..
The blistering performance led them to a half-time esque sit-off for 10minutes while they showed a trailer of a new claymation movie. The Crue, devoting thier last hours on Earth to a last blow-out of a gig before the Earth is wiped out by a planetoid collision... Yeah.. I don't know either but it looks fuckin' great. We also got that movie thing that Fallen saw.. that.. strangely hilarious reel of film showing various grotesqueries probably collected from random websites. So they came rip-roaring back onto the stage with some song I honestly can't get for the life of me which was followed by Girls, Girls, Girls (which I do remember) The huge screen at the back and the side ones featuring some lovely scantily-clad women for our viewing pleasure if watching 4 old men singing a song about young ladies wasn't much to our taste (but how could it not be?). The strippers dancing around and spanking thier midgets-on-a-ropes and flying around the stage doing thier act. It was all hella-amusing.. then BAM Vince whips out the titty-cam when Girls Girls Girls finishes.. The same talk about "Fuckin' hardware!!" and suchforth as what can be expected. The cam over here, didn't break Wink Some old saggy woman wouldn't get hers out which everyone booed at but people were light-hearted about it, thankfully.

About 3 quarters through the gig Nikki Sixx was promptly getting shot at by a set of spark streamers.. with a multitude of bangs and crashes as he rocked out on his little keyboard solo-thing. There wasn't even enough time to scream "I'm Nikki's love child" between the time the hard-rocking amigos came back from thier wait before they started up again with Too Young To Fall In Love of which was also, no doubt, a rocking success.

As Fallen says, there was much band-banter going on which is very much appreciated amongst fans. Much laughing and applauding came when Vince would reply to most things with just a "f**k Yeah!" but it's all that was nessacery and it made it what it was.

All in all, it was an outstanding gig and I know if I see the red and yellow striped colours anywhere again I'll think of that beautifully dirty circus-tent.

I was really suprised of how many young fans the gig attracted... There was, I'm sure, a 7 year old in the seats at one point.. Among the rest of the fat dudes in tight leather with the rocker wives.. there was also a large sum of young men dressed pretty much exactly like Nikki down to the scuffed, dyed hair and face-paint.

Nontheless I rate this concert a 9/10 'cause I rate highly anyway, the tickets sold out fast so we could only get seats ( Sad ) but when they come back, I'll be there.. spazzin' out on the sweat-laminate floors.

I suggest anyone to go if they love Motley Crue, Hairy bikers, Girls, leather, a great show, midgets.

Edit: Time to f**k the margins Wink
Edit2: Decided not to f**k the margins. Pain in the arse. > http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y86/GrayR...motleystuff.jpg
Edit3: Forgot to take out the attached stub/flyer.

Exactly as it was in Reno. So much eye candy for the hour I waited beforehand. And sadly, like KISS, 99% of those boys wear polo shirts and work a 9 to 5 office monkey job the other 364 days a year. Sad

Glad they're still holding up so well. No openers on the first American leg, sucks they're bringing along Sum 41 and some other shitty nu punk group for the second one. Sucks even more that the friend I'm going with is going to want to go early enough to see them. Damn.

Aaaaaanyway, tittie cam. Nikki.

Ah, the titty cam. Rolling eyes It brings out the best in everyone methinks. Wink

Its nice when the guys that dress up like Nikki actually look pretty hot. I don't know about you guys, but the last thing I really want to see at a Crue concert is like a forty-something balding round-around-the-middle man trying to fit himself into leather pants and torn up fishnet and scarves. I'll take the real deal anyday of the year though. You can keep all the wannabes fallen. Wink

Sure, long as they're good wannabes. Smile So they're Sixx-Pretty without the temper, baggage, ego, and Donna. And herd of kiddies.

Yes but there's the talent and just the overall sex appeal that Nikki has. Plus I like kiddies and being a dad is very sexy. If the wannabes can play the bass and have a kid then I might consider taking one. Wink

Saving up for the Crue concert in August has started. Cool

Total funds so far: $3.00

The fact that I will likely never be in Nik's personal presence for more than 10 minutes makes his family herd a non issue. In fact, I encourage his breeding.

But a sterile, yet talented, copycat works for me.

Woo, $3! Get back on the corner n' make some more. Razz
