This is my rant on Eye colors, The matter below doesn't apply if your chracters are in fantasy setting.
Multi-Eye colors
I know that people like that mysterious and rare quality of it, and I don't mind them, but hear me out.
When someone has a mutlicolored eyes, one of them must be blue or gray.
it's true, there are no two pairs of genes determining two eye colors, there's only one pair. It happens when the melanin-producing enzymes don't fuction properly for one of the eyes a week after birth.
Spectrum of Eye colors
In humans, there are only few.
In order of most melanin to least.
Black (me) Brown, Hazel, Green, and Blue then Gray (Gray is a very light blue)
there are no colors other than this, only variations.
Genetics
Blue and Gray is Recessive, Brown, Green and Black is Dominant. Everybody carries two genes, two genes sometimes have different "recording" to them, there are "dominant" kinds and "recessive" kinds, dominant always supress the recessive from showing.
Blue eyes - Blue eyes will only result in blue-eyed children (or gray, if that matters)
Brown eyes - Brown eyes will result in blue-eyed children in 0%, 25%, 50% chance. see below.
0% - Both of the parents have two brown genes.
25% - One of the parents have one blue gene that is suppressed by the other pair that is brown.
50% - Both of the parents have one recessive gene.
Albinism
Albinism is a recessive trait (meaning albino parents will always produce albino children) that disables a person from producing melanin, the natural body dye. This "disease" is reported from every race in the world. This disease is quite common in the animal kingdom, especially in mice.
Albino people don't have Red eyes.
Mice do, but that's because their pupil is thin/small enough to show the blood showing through, in humans, the blood is running too deep to show through, Albinos have no melanin for their lens, and that's quite common, those people have BLUE eyes.
EDIT: Red eyes are very rare, even in albino population.
QUOTE (Wikipedia) | albino appear red due to the underlying blood vessels showing through where there is not enough pigment to cover them. In humans this is generally not the case, as a human eye is quite large and thus produces enough pigment to lend opacity to the eye. Despite this, completely red eyes resulting from a lack of melanin to cover the underlying blood vessels are not unknown in humans.
All humans are born with Blue eyes
Their eye color changes due to the enzyme (mentioned above) in a day or two, if not faster. But in the womb, or if you are drawing hypothetical babies not yet born, their eyes should be blue.
I hated my biology class, but it was at least, useful. _________________ "Sarah's future makes me sad." - Benk |

There's an albino at my school who DOES have red eyes. I've seen an entire family with red eyes. So the red eyes might not be common, but it happens. |

yep, sorry, never mind, red eyes are rarity in Albinos, but most have blue. _________________ "Sarah's future makes me sad." - Benk |

OMG! It's bio class all over again! I hated that class, maybe that's why I didn't pay much attention. Some of this is quite new to me. |

O_O
Word.
I loved my Bio class. Out of the basic four, Bio was my strongest. B)
While I don't care about it so much in art (except for the multiple colours thing; I find that slightly on the annoying side since it's overdone), this problem crops up a lot in fanfiction and RPs, and it makes me want to cry. T_T

Funny, I don't normally go out of the blue-black range of color for eyes. Reason: I don't carry around with me multicolored pencils, so i guess that works out too.
I think eye color isn't so much important as it is when it is compaired on a small scale, (like your character's body isn't up close and in focus). _________________

Well, it's relatively important for me, because I generally do portraits (shoulder up).
Although yeah, if the subject is on a smaller scale, eye colour isn't going to matter so much. Other details take precedence then. _________________

Of course, a rather obvious explanation for off-color eyes in normal characters could be: "they're wearing contacts".
But you're right. We seem to have a supersaturation of characters with "fantasy" eye colors. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

I have two stories, one real-life and one fantasy that I'm always thinking of. In the real one, I have a family of only gray-eyes. which is plausible.
in the fantasy one, I've got plenty of reds and even, chartreuse >_<

I can totally handle characters with weird eye colors. Of course, putting characters with 'fantasy' eye colors into a real-life setting is pretty lame, and I don't like that at all. BUT, as long as the character has two eyes of the same color, I can deal. Once people start mixing up eye colors (Yuna from FFX, Yoru from Sukisyo, half the goth characters submitted to FAC, etc.), it just annoys me to no end. I think it's stupid. |

...You're kidding, right? That colour is so bright, it burns my eyes. But I give you points for them being green-yellow instead of something like "violet, flecked with red". =_=; _________________

I didn't mind Yuna having two toned eyes. It is natural, like Brian pointed out.
I think two-toned eyes are fun in fantasy situations. |

That's why I don't like it - even if it is natural, it's still relatively rare. Even in fantasy settings, if everyone were allowed to give their characters two different colours for eyes, well then... You get a lot of OCs which aren't exactly "original" anymore regarding the eyes. It's overused, and that's why I don't like it. _________________

Multicolored eyes. So that's what you call them. I have an oc with that ( blue and pine green). I also have characters with orchid, amber, pink, and lime green eyes. *grins* I like the not-normal-eyes. However, my eyes are a darkish blue (and just that). _________________ It took me about ten minutes to defeat Giga Bowser, Ganondorf, and Mewtwo from Super Smash Brothers Melee using Peach.
How long did it take my brother to defeat those characters using Yoshi? Two minutes.
I like to obsess over stuff. Here are all the things I'm obsessing over:
Song: Seize the Day by Default
Anime: D.Gray Man
Anime character(s): Kanda
Video Game: Super Smash Brothers Brawl
Video Game character: Wolf O-Donnell from Star Fox Assault
OC: Ray Eclrida, copyright of me (duh!)

I had all that speach last year in Biologie class but still, the chances of having an eye coklor your parents don't have is very slim, to not say none but the weird thing is that me and my sis have eyes that change color and even mixt (One day can be brown, next week green then green and brown together) but my mother has dark brown eyes while mine are mostly light brown (But they can go from dark to light, same for the green) and my father has blue or brown eyes (don't really remember since it makes 10 months I haven't see him)
Nor my mother or father have green eyes and still, it's the color mine thends to be more often... And I once had a green and a brown eye, gladly it wasn't too obvious since it was light brown and dark green but still.
...My genes are weird.
My friend even told me once that my eyes (And this really is true) were golden. Not brown, black, blue, green or gray but golden...! Immagine the shock on my face when she told me... >< Gladly it happened only once.
And I did met a person who had a grey eye and the other one was dark brown. _________________ A life with love will have some thorns but a life without love will have no rose |

grey is fine, it's just a variation of blue, but blue's more common and people with grey eyes tend to shift from blue to grey back and forth. _________________ "Sarah's future makes me sad." - Benk |

I know that already. But I have a friend who's eyes are grey and it somehow looks kind of silver. They never get anything that looks like blue or maybe just a little but barelly. Grey is a very light blue but still, her eyes don't look blue unless you look at them very closely and still, you could almost swear they're silvery. Anotehr person i know has about the same thing and maybe even more silver looking. I just don't remember which of the two it is but I see them everyday believe me, these two are the only people I ever saw with eyes like that. _________________ A life with love will have some thorns but a life without love will have no rose |
