I'm feeling awkward right now. I don't know if I should put this in Gen. Art Discussion or Gen. Discussion. Aww, to heck with it. This fits in both forums. Um, was there even a thread like this before???
So anyway I was just wondering if some of you college people have chosen fine arts as their course. Meh...I just started out last week. Actually I shifted from Mechanical Engineering(took it for one year) 'cuz it wasn't my line. And too much math turns my brain into pulp. So I took fine arts. Well, it was my second choice. Engineering was the first one. I gave it up and decided to give art classes a try. I'm loving it right now. Problem is my school's far from my house.
So ehh...anyone else?
............I'm so alone.... |

After the summer ends, my third semester's gonna start. For the first two semesters, I pursured interior design. To make a long story short, I hated it and switched to graphic design instead. I'm currently attending Nova Community College and then I'm gonna transfer to George Mason, which is just 30 min away from my house. I'm now pursuing a Bachelors degree for Graphic Design. I'm pretty sure graphic design is a member of fine art. |

Technically....graphic design is part of communication arts (along with advertising and illustration). Or more broadly, is part of design. With toy design, fashion, product design, digital/concept, and the like. Fine art would be painting, sculpture, any conceptual non-product or commercial based field.
Unless you're talking about degrees, in which case a Bachelor of Fine Arts is about 70/30 studio to lit classes, where a Bachelor of Art is more 50/50.
I'm doing a BFA in painting, so...yeah. Five months ago I'd have laughed at the pretentious fine artists from my happy little com arts illustration tower, but now I am one of them. Alas.
Typical 4 year bachelors degree. Second year starting in August. wee.

Hardly any of my friends are into fine arts, but I met someone during this art class I took this summer. He was getting left behind in his assignments and pleaded for my help. So, I invited him to my house and we just worked on our assignments together. We had to paint abstract designs and present it to the class. After about four hours, he asked for my opinion and showed me his completed design. I kinda glowered; I mean after four hours of working, all I saw on his 18 x 24 inch paper was a line art of two diamonds weakly intersecting each other, and that's it. I couldn't believe it. He proudly said, "I think this is the best thing I've ever made!" He expected me to like it; I could tell by the way he looked at me. I just kinda froze, cocked my head in confusion and was like, "Uhhh... Dude? There's...nothing much I'm seein here." He kinda sighed and said, "You don't like it, do you?" What could I do? I just stood there, simpered, and shrugged my shoulders. I guess he thinks I'm bein ignorant. Maybe I am; I dunno. Ah well!
The last day of that class was today; the day all assignments were to be turned in. He never showed up, though; he's skipped so many classes. It'd be pathetic if he failed the class simply because he hardly ever showed up. |

I'm warning you in advance, I work in admissions.
It depends on what school you go to and what you major in (and how much you make of the opportunities the school will give you). First of all, it is all about the portfolio. Plenty of illustrators and concept artists never went to art school and got their job simply because of their amazing portfolio. What a degree will give you is four years to get experience and build that amazing portfolio, connections (depending on the school), and a small sign of your commitment to art and that you've apparently learned at least the basics.
If you go to a top level school (Art Center, Otis, Pratt, RISD, SAIC, SFAI, Ringling, CalArts, a few others), you'll make industry connections through faculty, alumni, internships, n' all that.
As for what you can do with the actual degree, just about anything. It depends on the program. But even then, if you go to a good school, you'll have the foundation of experience to do lots of other things. Otis fine art grads go on to do illustration, movie special effects, costume design, stuff like that, as well as the standard gallery fine art people. Digital Media grads do animation, special effects, concept art, and so on. You can do toy design (two schools only, Otis and one in NYC), advertising, packaging, illustration for books/magazines/adverts, product design (like...taking technology and designing how it looks. Cell phones, accessories, electronics, appliances, various gadgets).
The successful art programs have a far better career placement rate than most everyday jobs. 90 some percent of Otis grads go to work in their field directly after graduation. We also have a high drop out rate 'cause it's constructed to be intense like med school, weeding out the people who don't have the dedication to do it.
My personal plans are still up in the air. We'll see how it goes. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Wow, thanks Fallen. I'm considering trying to major in some form of art. I'm going to be a senior this year....so I kinda feel like I have to decide right away what I'm going to do. You've helped me out. Made me realize there's all kinds of things out there. ^_^ _________________ I have magical female powers

No i'm a computer science major.
it has so much math that you'll be frightened if i go on.
I'm still thinking of a minor. Maybe film stuides or creative writing. I'd like to get a certificate in computer animation later in the future though ^_^ _________________ I'm a bit silly on the goofy side on nonsense. ^_^ |

I was thinking about a minor as well; I was actually thinking creative writing. Thankfully, for the degree I'm pursuing, I only need to take one math class, which I already completed. I've had bad experiences with math as far as I can remember. I'm simply glad I didn't choose to undertake Trignometry back in high school; a lot of students came dangerously close to failing that time. Heh, math has always been my biggest fear. |

But is it a BA or BFA? Even animation/digital students at Otis come out with a BFA because of the amount of studio they take compared to lit classes. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Bachelor of Applied Arts in Animation.
I just say "BA" when I talk about it because there are far too may 'A's in the name. They're making T-shirts for it that have pictures of sheep on them saying "BAAA". _________________

In my school it's BFA with 3 majors. Painting, Interior Design and Advertising Arts. I took AA. Painting and ID were too generalized. AA is great, though. It's much more flexible than the others.
To be honest, I'm a little worried about the "portfolio" thing. |
