So at Otakon they showed an amazing movie called Yojimbo. It was made in I believe 1961, but it was still very well done. It's about a traveling samurai who strolls into a town that has fallen into darkness. A feud between the two richest of the town has been going on for some time. He offers his services as a bodyguard to the one house and I wont continue with the story from there. CHECK IT OUT!
And of course, to make this a valid topic:
What old movies have any of you seen that were surprisingly good? How did the plot go? How cheesy were the effects. Describe them well and I'll give you a cookie!...well...no I wont!

A lot of black and white films were great. Back in the days when film-makers were innovators and the audience wasn't stupid.
The best old films were
Sanjuro
The Seven Samurai
The Hidden Fortress
+ Yojimbo
All of those are classic Samurai films by Akira Kurosawa
Dr Strangelove: Or I learned to stop Worrying and love the bomb.
A satire on nuclear war during the Cold War. Funny as Hell
The Longest Day
The D-day invasion in its entire scope, WAY better than Saving Private Ryan
Psycho
Scary as hell, no real special effects.
The Seventh Seal
Terrific Morality Play by Ingmar Bergman (no Special Effects)
Lolita
Dark Comedy by Stanley Kubrick about a 40 yr old man's obsession w/ 14 yr
old girl
Paths of Glory
Stanely Kubrick's World War I movie about three soldiers accused of
cowardice and sentenced to die
The Killing
Stanely Kubrick's tale of a Race Track robbery. Inspiration for Reservior
Dogs in its non-linear editing

Monkey Business was so funny. I expected it to be stupid, but it was hilarious. Ginger Rogers in particular gave an excellent performance. _________________ |

Old horror movies are great for special effects. Things like King Kong and Dracula come to mind. Dracula was great because he'd turn into a bat, and it was totally this stuffed bat on a string.
You should try watching the original 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. It's so bad that it's fantastic. It's also so old that it's a silent film. The story is merged with some other random story about India, and Captain Nemo ends up being the long-lost king of some Indian nation. It's a real mind trip, although I guess it was groundbreaking because I think it was the first movie to use extensive underwater photography. The movie also involves a huge fake-looking octopus with suckers made out of cut-up tennis balls.
Ha ha, old movies. <3 |

The Oldest movie I've watched was I think, Snow White.
I don't watch a lot of movies...
I don't read a lot of books...
I don't play a lot of games...
but I'm entertained in the strangest of ways. _________________ "Sarah's future makes me sad." - Benk |

Grah. The only old films I remember watching was either the original Lord of the Flies movie, or one of the movies about Agatha Christie's Poirot. Can't remember which one. I think it was Evil Under the Sun? Yeah... ^^; _________________

The Seven Samurai was a good movie, as is The Magnificant Seven, the western adaptation of the story. Both movies come highly recomended by me.
I love the original Fly. Yeah, the effects were cheesy at times, but it was a vry tense and suspensful movie. Directers nowadays always make the mistake of showing too much of the monster too soon.
Case in point: Darkness Falls. This would have been a more than decent movie, if not for the fact that they show the witch/ghost thingy in the first scene of the movie. After that there is no mystery and the movie is officially ruined. <_< _________________
