Hm..Well, I'm not great with scenery, nor am I good with drawing items (but I draw items way better than scenery). But, my greatest strength is creating characters (and creating unique costumes). So, I kinda want to get into (Japanese) animation, and work in the field of character designer for TV shows.

Soon, someday, you will see my characters on TV!! Soon!! Mwa ha ha ha!!

I want to have my own studio, design the architecture and interior of my own house, have my work printed on merchandise (i.e. calendars, book covers, t-shirts, all that good crap), and I want my name to be recognizable. Those are my long, long, long term goals, though. I just want to start off with some simple graphic design released unto a wide audience.

I won't consider myself 'experienced' until i draw a nude portrait. I won't even call myself an artist until I do.

Art is just a hobby for me. During my life, if I can send the manga magazines (Korean or French, since the native manga industry in North America sucks currently...) some one-shot manuscripts and get it published, I'd be happy.

I'm thinking of setting up my own site at the end of highschool and just keep my artworks there, and provide link to the Deviant Art pages for prints, I need that extra money.

Nudes are actually really fun to draw. I did one for an art class over the summer. The models are really nice and do pretty much anything you want.

I'm going into game design next year in college, so that's what my art goes for. MSU is the only school with a comprehensive Undergrad course...

What's stopping you?
Really I'd just like to get into any field of art that doesn't require realism
Hate to say it, but those fields don't exist. All (and I mean all) successful, working artists have a firm grasp of realism. That includes cartoonists, animators, concept artists, sequential artists, anime, all of them. You can't convincingly stylize anything without knowing how to do it realistically. You get the basics first, then style and simplification.

No company (aside from little no name companies that will never make a profit, let alone compensate the artist) will hire an artist that cannot do realism. Photo realism isn't necessary, but proper proportions and knowledge of form/value/tone is.

EDIT: Oh, and to answer the thread, I'ma be an illustrator. Because it's the only thing I remotely enjoy and could stand doing for prolonged periods of time. All my rock star stuff... meh. I give some of them to the subject matter n' that's good enough. I would like to be able to take my own photos and/or get a couple of them to sit still long enough to draw them, but I try to keep things realistic.

My ultimate goal is to be able to make my own manga. Kinda far-fetched, but at the rate I'm improving, it's a possibility. ^^ I'm finally gaining the ability to draw the same character more than once, so who knows? XD
I'd like to get into video game or anime character design. Just making up the characters.
My biggest dream right now is to see my three main OCs professionally animated. If I can just see them on screen, voice actors and everything I can't tell you how happy I'd be.
Then you and I have the same dream, eh Lindsay? Course, when it comes to voice acting, I hope my characters don't end up getting real sucky voices.
I'm finally gaining the ability to draw the same character more than once, so who knows? XD
You mean you haven't memorized how to draw your characters completely? Shame on you. I have eight characters whom I've memorized.

I currently just draw for a hobby, I use to have dreams of working in the field of art; but then after doing a small bit of research the hard facts came in and it was not all fun and games, its work plain and simple. If you want to get in the art field (like say work for Disney, or doing videogame artwork) First of all you cant just be good you got to be the best. And able to be very flexible in doing what ever the project is. Work long days and even sleep overnight at your job just too make dead lines. Some times your boss will get you to do things that you may not agree with or goes against your personal/moral standards. You also got to be very computer savvy and heavy duty math and speed to keep up to a very demanding atmosphere. But if you still really want to do some sort of artwork there are other areas that you can look into that maybe you never thought of before. Like making new wallpaper designs, the new logo for the next brand of cereal, whatever. Its not just limited to the gaming, and animation field or relating too But even still, the art field is very competitive area to get into and even after years of schooling you can still not find the job you want or even make it in. Or on the other hand you can become a self made artist like Thomas Kinkade painter of light, Robert Bateman (nature artist) etc But in the end you never know, some artists become famous with in their life time and others after theyre long gone.
the new logo for the next brand of cereal
That's graphic design and just as demanding as animation/illustration/concept. A lot is still inhouse companies, or the minority of freelance business, and freelancing is even harder schedules because on top of the standard amount of time actually working, you have to put in the huge hours just finding work.

There are alternatives to the popular art fields, but all of them require the busy schedules and hard work. Those that don't are generally part time hobbies to supplement a day job. Like people who make greeting cards or do some web design after work. There really are no easy art related jobs.

And yeah, you do have to be the best. There's also a lot of jobs that you're just not going to get. Anime (if you're American), gallery fine artist (all about luck, odds are extremely against you), traditional 2d animation like the old disney movies (basically gone), etc.

Anyone who wants to be Thomas Kinkade should be shot.

Well, I've memorized how they look just fine, but...I don't know. For awhile, I'd draw them really well once, say who that person was, memorize everything about it, but when I'd try to draw them again, it wouldn't look anything like them. e.e But, now, I can finally draw characters more than once. At least with Shianne I can. ^_^

I dunno, I'd bet against you, American manga-like substance artist maybe.

Anywho, I never planned to take Art as major, I'll be realistic, people who are in the business and is breaking new grounds in artistry were a lot better than me when they were in highschool. Either I stop studying and drop out of IB and only focus on art. (which won't happen) or just have art as hobby, which I'll try, but working traditional costs a lot of money, especially markers...

Hnnh. Having a career in art is so not the thing for me. Especially seeing that I'm nearly out of college already, with a degree in computer science and biology...

Art's never been anything more than a hobby to me. It's something I enjoy doing on the side for my own amusement. I have no impractical dreams of becoming an animator or a manga artist - those are kids' dreams.

I'd still like to make enough clay dragons to try entering a craft show someday, but that's about as far as my ambitions go.
