William Harnett has got to be one of my absolute favorite artists aside from Raphael and various manga people. What absolutely gets me is that it seems like nobody's ever heard of him. The baby Jesus cries now. He mostly painted still lifes, and some of the most realistic and beautiful ones I've seen. Anybody else hear of him?

Here are a few of his more famous paintings:

I absolutely love his still lifes. Pity no one knows about him.

There's also a bit of controversy about his art: He had a friend named Peto, and they both painted together, and developed extremely similar styles. However, Peto didn't becoma as famous as Harnett did, and eventually just scratched out his name on his paintings and replaced it with Harnett's signature, giving Harnett the credit. Today, people are discovering that their supposed Harnetts are actually Petos.

That would suck. :B

Anyway, anybody else hear of the guy?

His wins the "Why the hell didn't you just take a picture?!?!" award. Way too realistic for me.

although, since he was before the invention of colour phtography, his work might have been more popular... Ultra-Realism isn't very popular now. Too bad, it would have been interesting to see more of them nowadays.
