So I'm sure most of you know that "The Ring" was an American remake of the Japanese movie "Ring" (known as "Ringu" in the US for whatever means)

Now we've got the sequal to the Ring coming out (there are 4 or 5 movies in Japan of this series) AND "The Grudge" (aka "Ju On")

So why is it we've got all these remakes from Japan but we've got the straight-up movie from China ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" or "Hero" for example) or France ("Brotherhood of the Wolf") etc etc?

Personally I liked the original of "Ring" a lot better than the remake (made me laugh at some parts, actually....) and already I like "Ju On" better (simple for the fact that it doesn't have Sarah Michelle Geller in it T.T;;;;)

any thoughts?

ringu was aslso a manga, I read it once.

Hell, I'd go to see "The Grudge" just cuz Sarah Michelle gellar is in it! But somehow I cant picture that movie as a japanese movie.
Dunt know why though.

"The Grudge" looks pretty eerie.

Whoa deja-vu... me and a friend of mine were just talking about this earlier today when we were in Blockbuster. And it's not just remakes there are several movies that have heavy influence from Japanese pop culture and anime (Kill Bill and Sky Captain for example). Not only that but I have noticed a ton of subbed Japanese movies one the shelves, can't really recall any of the names... I think one of them might have been like "Facing the Ocean" or omething but don't quote me on it.

hi ^_^ . ya know what I went and saw The Grudge and well to be honest.....it wasnt scarry.(to me) but there were a few(annoying) <_< Grr! ppl down in da bottom rows of the theater who would SCREAM and some ppl kept making comments very loudly and well all in all, I basically said at he end of the movie that it could pass as a comedy rather than a horror.

I had such high hopes of being scared, but alas It was a dissapointment.(Hows a 15 yr old suppose to have some fun!?) oh well saw comes out tomorrow. guess whos going Very Happy
comedy rather than a horror
Yeah, considering there was ZERO comedy element through the whole film. <_<

My personal take on this is, Hollywood is simply running out of good ideas, that they need to pick up stuff from other countries and "adapt" them, Whorelywood style.

The most recent, and reallly decent movie I've seen is The Incredibles from Pixar. You can say this was for kids, but hell, I've enjoyed more mushy moments in this movie than the recent "drama" crap coming out of Hollywood.

What really ticks me off is, Jennifer Lopez playing the dance instructress for the Whorelywood version of Sall We Dance! What a friggin travesty!

I've only seen a trailer to the american version of the Grudge (it's not out here in Holland) so I can't say anything on that. But I liked the Japanese version. I have Ju-on 1 and 2 on dvd. They were kinda scary. And judging by the trailer they didn't change the story much.

And I did like the Japanese Ringu better than the American one.
But I also saw the other parts of ringu. Ringu 2, Ringu 0 basudai and Spiral. And they get more weirder every part. Still I don't regret watching them.

I'm a big fan of Japanese films, especcialy Japanese horror films. So I don't get why they have to remake them in America. Just release the original ones is my opinion. But I guess I don't have much to say in that.

Which film will be next? Dark water perhaps? Or Kakashi?

Yep yep!

The Incredibles RULE!!!!

By far the best super hero movie I have seen. Great characters, a James Bond-ish setting and enjoyable story. What is refreshing to see is how the usual comic book powers we already know were done on a not so usual fashion.
