I could've made a much longer list. But....too much. :(
Just leave Poison on there twice, and one will be with Blues on guitar. Fuck Kotzen, Native Tongue ain't that good. But Crack A Smile is. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Did you miss the threads full of MCR hate (and the few nutswingers who like them for whatever mislead reason)?
They're a horrible trend, worst thing to come out of Jersey since Bon Jovi. Sooner the emo kids get tired of them the better. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Just worst thing since, not saying Jovi is quite as bad. They are now, but weren't at the time.
But, they still weren't very good. Although I just don't like them, and musically it was all Richie making them respectable. Same reason I didn't include Def Leppard. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

In what? Including nu metal and a bit of grunge/alternative? La di da. And the self righteous pricks, U2, who haven't done anything worth being so self important and arrogant in years.
NIN and Placebo pretty much cover anything worth listening to in the genres. Perhaps Jane's Addiction as well, but I don't think they're that great.
I rather like Nirvana, but since everyone and their grandmother include them, I left them out. No sense adding to the hype.

Like I said - I didn't think I'd do so well in this thread.
I like U2 - scratch that - I like all the bands I listen to for the music. I don't know a lot of history behind the bands. Hence why I said I'd do so bad in this thread.
Like I said, I'm uneducated when it comes to older bands. |
I don't think there is Narvana Hype.
There's a huge amount of Nirvana hype, partially due to the fact they're still relatively current and applicable to modern teens, and partially because Kurt died in his prime.
As far as still being current goes, many kids claim to love Nirvana without even really understanding the lyrics. They just drool over how Kurt was "so deep" and "really speaks to me", but if asked to explain any of the songs, they couldn't go beyond a general explanation of what the song's about. The subject matter, though, is still current. Most teens don't want to go out and be anarchists or party all the time or wear glitter. They still want to complain about how much life sucks, and sit in the dark writing crappy poetry. So Kurt's writing still appeals to them, prompting the mindless fandom of "omg nirvana is the best ever!!!!".
And as if this isn't enough, Kurt dying in his prime simply made Nirvana far more important than they would have been. Had he lived, he would have followed the natural progression of artists. He'd have hit a peak and followed with less than fabulous albums that always failed to live up to his best. Eventually he'd have grown out of the style he was writing in, or simply abandoned the music business entirely, since he never enjoyed it. But because he died, all there is of Nirvana is the good stuff. Most other bands have the few really good albums and then those ones that suck. Nirvana seems better than they truly were because there isn't anything that's a complete failure, Kurt never got the chance to write it.
There's a ton of hype. They were nowhere near as influential or talented as people make them out to be, purely because of the reasons above. And on a semi-personal note, the fact Cobain had a large role in the still thriving trend of DIY rock stars is horribly irritating. Yes, Kurt was a fine guitarist in the sense that he understood you don't need a 2 minute guitar solo to make a good song. A song with strong writing can be great with very simple guitar, and after 10 years of complex guitar gods, that was a powerful statement. However, 12 years later, we've still got kids playing two chords (and playing them poorly) and thinking that's good guitar playing. It's just lazy and a lack of skill! Cobain had a purpose for it, "musicians" today in the nu punk bands just suck. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |
