Virtually all image programs offer a resize option. MS Paint calls it "stretch" (don't use Paint, because it doesn't do quality resizes). Most other programs will call it "Resize" or "Rescan", and the quality of it varies according to the program. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

When I think about it, I could probably slap together a program capable of decent resize/rescan jobs (DirectX has a good resizing algorithm built right in) . . . . _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Wait a sec, are you referring to resizing or cropping?
Resize: To change the size of the entire image.
Crop: To Reduce the size of the image by trimming empty space from the top, bottom, and/or sides. The image itself remains at the same scale/resolution as before. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Here's how to do resizing/cropping in MS Paint. In Paint, go to the "Image" menu and select "Stretch/Skew", adjust the scale numbers, hit OK, that's how you resize an image. Let me stress (again) that Paint doesn't do a good job of resizing images.
To crop an image in Paint, use the rectangular select tool to define the area of the image you want to keep. Then go to the "Edit" menu and select either "Cut" or "Copy". Next, go to the "Image" menu, select "Attributes", and change the image width/height to 1. This will basically delete the entire thing. Then, go to the "Edit" menu and select "Paste". When Paint asks you if you want to enlarge the image, say Yes. Voil! Image cropped. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Another way to size up your pictures is with whatever scanning program you use. After highlighting the area you want to scan, the program should say somewhere what the size of the highlighted area is. Divide 600 by whatever the width of the scan area is, and that'll give you a resolution (generally about 50 for a full-size sheet of paper). Adjust the scanner resolution (aka image size, in pixels per inch) to that value and the scanner should scan it in at almost exactly 600 pixels wide.
The reason we can't give you much in the way of detailed instructions is that the exact commands vary depending on the type of program you use, so unless one of us has the same program as you do, we can't give you a step-by-step tutorial.
For example, I have two programs on my comp, one is an old thing called "iPhoto Plus" (best features: mosaic and quality resizes) and the other is an old version of LView Pro (best feature: wide support of image formats) and if I ever had a problem with either of them, I don't know if anybody would be able to help me.
And once again, Paint doesn't do quality resizes. I.e. if you shrink an image by 50%, you'll lose literally every other pixel from the image, and any nice smooth lines will become not-so-smooth lines. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA
