This book was written in the 1960's by Gabriel Marquez, who later won the nobel prize for the book and related works. It is the founding stone in the magical-realism genre. This book is avoided in many highschools but my grade 11 class is reading this book for our IB world lit paper on December 9th Banghead

It is a story about a family in a metaphorical town in South America, probably somewhere in Columbia. It cycles through 6 generations.

It isn't exactly written "hard" except that the flow of time isn't constant, there is absolutely no climax, and every words are written in one tone.

and by magical realism, I mean:

Flying magic carpets
Young Prostitute who is capable of 50 men a day
Child born with a tail, who later gets eaten up by ants
People living for 200 years, while some maturing in 4,5 years.
Blood flowing for hundreds of meters from the execution site to inform the wife of the killing.

I'm supposed to finish by end of next week, has anyone else read this book?

Unfortunatly, I have not. I was at the NHI today, and my "coach" was telling us about it, and highly suggests we read it. Sounds good. By the main points you gave, it sounds a little wierd also. A kid gets eaten by ants.... WTF?

Anyway, I was looking for a new book to read and I guess this is it! I had totally forgotten about it 'till I saw your post. I might try to read it in spanish also.... Sorry I couldn't help ya out, but I just felt like putting down my opinion. Smile

Read half of it as of today, it's actually a lot easier to read than most people say. :)

maybe because I don't read many novels anyway and I'm not used to specific style.

I've read 16 now, 6 of them being Harry Potter. :)

BTW, the main theme of the book is incest, a family who is incapable of meddling with other families, so they love each other for generations, and thus, 100 years of solitude.
