Ok, so I was going through a bunch of old sketches of mine and I came across one I did of an OC named Rei'Shivah. She was an rp character of mine that I had drew over a year ago during my Calculus II class (because, let's face it, the only reason they have it is to teach it to other people). So anyways, was thumbing through the sketchbook, saw the pic, and thought, "gee, I bet I could redraw this and make it look sweet-spiffy", so I did. Observe:

After:

Anyways, post your own examples of radical improvements/changes in styles, characters, etc. _________________

Did you share that first one when you did it? Or were working on something else involving it at the time? 'Cause it looks so damn familiar...

Um, the old one? I think I posted it on FAC. I know it's somewhere in my dA gallery. _________________

'k, so I'm not crazy.
I have you watched on DA, so that's probably where I saw it.
I'd redraw an old picture, but...no time. Too busy with finals and essays and drawing prison bitches about to be sodomized n' all. Ya know, the usual.
But...
http://www.fanart-central.net/pic-2034.html um...7th grade. So, 1999-ish. The very first, so it doesn't get much rougher than that.
http://www.fanart-central.net/pic-181448.html Earlier this year. Mmmm Taime...
And yet I think people still prefer http://www.fanart-central.net/pic-6097.html from 2003. Peaked so early in life. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Hm. I have a lot of improvements that show in my gallery, but I guess I'll just stick to my original characters.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v686/joo...ou/HPIM0223.jpg THE OLD ONES.
Same basic characters, but I tossed some, altered a lot, gave outfit changes, yadda, yadda. Look, kids! It's generic sh*tty anime style! That particular style didn't last very long with me. :/ It wasn't personalized enough. It was just... generic. But looook! Attack of the giant chins! And bad lineart! Gawd, this picture is awful. ._.; I drew it a little over a year ago. I want to smack myself for it's badness. I really do. D: And even though my aim was always cliche for what I'm working on, this is just... sad. I really failed at outfit design, too. =D
NOW JOOU, IT'S NOT NICE TO MOCK PEOPLE YOUNGER THAN YOU.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v686/joo...oou/OCs-Kat.jpg
Newer version. I screwed up on Gatha's face a lot, so I make up for it with: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v686/joo...ou/HPIM0151.jpg.
If you missed them in the doodles thread, http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v686/joo...ou/bums-Kat.jpg are also my OCs, though the guy on the right didn't make it onto this picture. :/
But yeah. I dropped the anime style for a more realistic one (downward-pointing noses, eyes that fit on the head, lips, etc.), learned basic anatomy and proportions, and developed a shading fetish so extreme, my characters look black. ._.; I need to work on that. Or maybe I should give Milo dark skin...
No! Mustn't alter characters anymore! >_<
But huzzah, I think I've shown some improvement. _________________ FAC |

There are rather few characters in my gallery I've drawn multiple times. Of the ones I have, however....
Dracans
My complaint against the "man-in-a-lizard-suit" syndrome suffered by many fantasy reptilian species. Catalyst for this idea was the box art from Everquest: the Ruins of Karnak.

v1.0 (circa 2000): http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures.php?pid=129798
Small (but clawed) feet, blue armor plating over the chest, belts and weapons. No other clothing of any sort, and back then, that even freaked ME out
v2.0 (circa 2001): http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures.php?pid=129800
Improved the wing/arm structure, and changed the body armor to look more like natural body armor (which it is), than something crafted and added on later.
v2.1 (same): http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures.php?pid=76727
Different leg structure (more like typical hind legs), and now in color, too! Awesome.
v2.2 (2004): http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures.php?pid=142674
Nothing radical, just general improvements in technique.[/list:u]
Dragons (general)
Your typical fire dragons, nothing special.

v1.0 (circa 1999): http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures.php?pid=78308
Round and plump with thin wings and stubby legs. Very sparse decor on the tail here.
v2.0 (circa 2000): http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures.php?pid=80614
Less fat, more muscle. Still a little short in the decor department though.
v2.1 (later 2000): http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures.php?pid=83573
Even leaner and meaner, and now with larger, much more noticeable tail designs.
v3.0 (2004): http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures.php?pid=90267
A few more horns, and a LOT more spikes added to the design, plus nice scaley textures and a (then-)experimental veiny pattern to the wings.[/list:u]
Dragons - Feathered
Dragons with feathered wings, and a feathered body too.

v1.0 (circa 2000): http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures.php?pid=83573
Save for the beak, and the bare legs, looks much like the other dragons. I was still learning how to do feathers at this time.
v2.0 (later 2000): http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures.php?pid=83584
Much improved after taking some very close studies of my year 2000 Eagles calendar. Improved tail design, and a pair of 'split' wings to fly with.
v3.0 (2004): http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures.php?pid=99366
Much improved in the feathers department, changed to a swallowtail design for the tailfeathers, and split the wings much deeper this time, painting an impression that these dragons have four wings instead of just two.[/list:u]
Elemental Dragons
Since there are eight of these guys, I'm just going to pick one and describe him: Ice.

v1.0 (circa 1999): http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures.php?pid=147673
Basic dragon shape, with a standard sized (small) tail design, only apparently made of ice (notice the wings are translucent).
v2.0 (circa 2000): http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures.php?pid=148550
Leaner overall shape, nicer colors, improved horn and tail designs. Looking really icy now.
v2.1 (later 2000): http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures.php?pid=80019
Much shinier and a larger tail design. However, the lack of body decor (aside from the spine/tail and stripes of color) made him seem like a bit of a naked dragon....
v3.0 (2004): http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures.php?pid=152863
Holy did I improve a lot in four years![/list:u] _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Good to see other people like to put a new spin on their older work. And love seeing the changes in people's styles as they grow as an artist.
I did a picture awhile ago of my first creations in the original style I drew them (still amazed I could mimic my million year old art style) and then drew them around it, in my more current. I have also a seires of picture I call Evo, that is just oen character I drew years ago, then redrew few years later, and so on.
Here is History Class, the one with the old and new in one.

What a great excuse to post this little 'chart' thing I made a bit ago.
It's three pictures of my OC Manta side by side, one from 2003 (Crayola pencils! @_@), one from 2004, and one from 2006.
http://fanart-central.net/pic-291304.html
But even since then I've been workinh on 'evolving' my style a bit. I've always been worried about it looking like generic anime, so I've been changing how I draw faces (the eyes mainly but tere are some other subtle differences). I guess I'm going for a more 'American' look now. :/ It still looks anime though ^^;

Wow, drawing into the future! What talent! XD
Myself, I'm still growing, so my art style is fluctuating almost constantly, which makes it hard to say how I've improved, other than general proportion (still need lots of work, though...) So, yeah.
Jay, on that last post I'm kinda sorry to say it, but I liked the first one better. The newer one looks the same, but stylised, and with an added belt addiction. |
