Gawd, when HAVEN'T I've seen Dir en Grey as a top favorite on a list of Japanese Rock bands? Er, whatever, I'll stop ranting and start listing:
Pierrot
Malice Mizer
L'arc~en~Ciel
Dir en Grey
I'd probably say more, but you said J-Rock bands, so I can't really include the artists. :X _________________ "Don't Worry, Just Because I Don't Talk to You, Doesn't mean I Hate You!"

I'm willing to bet Bowie has played a concert in Japan at one point or another, and he's rock, so David Bowie is my favorite.
 Don't question it. _________________

Luna Sea. But Psycho le Cemu wins for Variety and wider appeal. _________________ |

From your responses, I can't really tell if you've heard them or not. Now, I could go as far to assume that you haven't listened to a wide array of bands in the genre, considering one of the artists on your lists is of the J-Pop kind, not that I have a problem with either, but I digress.
Now, Luna Sea split a long time ago, I don't know the reason, one of the members probably died or something, I'm not very informed on intimate affairs in bands, but I digress. They were more than likely at the peak of their career before your time. One could say that L'arc is a newer version of Luna Sea-- I wouldn't, personally. Sea's vocals are much better, and L'arc as a whole pales in comparison. Though the instrumentals in L'arc are quite nice at times, but that's not relevant.
I brought up PLC beacause it's one of those bands that tends to appeal to everyone who likes Japanese music, Gamers, Anime fans, and Music fans. Though I personally thought they had a hit or miss thing going for them, alot of the songs were better than others and the like. The videos had a very nice Parody thing going for them, Ai No Uta seemed to parody a videogame or Anime, and Gekai Merry Go Round seemed like a direct spinoff of Phantasy Star online. But the costumes were quite fabulous (I loved the Journey West costumes ).
Malice Mizer wins on some, but very few levels for me, There's the "OMG GACKT AND MANA FUTA FAP" factor, but that's not one I care about. The Klaha era was the most elegant and really was "Goth Music" at it's finest. The Gackt era seemed to churn out more sex appeal and poppy type songs, though. But such is the fate of anything associated with him, some of the songs from that Era were pretty damn catchy, though.
Dir en Grey seems to be a band that relies on Visiual shock more than anything, though. :\ The vocalist is probably very skilled with Autofellatio judging from his..odd vocal stylings.
 I'm done. _________________ |

I think this thread sucks already, but that's just me. I mean, five posts in and it's already got spam (Tyler... ).
I don't listen to music based on bandds, anyway. If I like a song, I'll listen to it. The band it belongs to doesn't mean anything anymore.
Especially since WAG only has one good song (吹きすさぶ風の中で). Suckage.

yeah, I think I'd actually have to agree with you. There are a few bands where I absolutely love every song I've heard, but just listening to what you like is best!
having a "best band" is impossible anyway...reccommendations based on what people personally think are the best bands/songs would have been nicer... |

Ride on Shooting Star from The Pillows seemed pretty nice to me but all the other songs they play during FLCL doesnt sound right on a cd or mp3. It only seems to go with the show. |

Dir en Gray is over-glorified.
HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR is by far better. _________________
