These haven't bothered me much until just recently, and now their just frankly pissing me off.

I'm almost always sitting somewhere sketching with my CD player handy, my headphones practically glued to my head. Occasionally I get a What are you listening to? and I normally reply with one of the following: The Beatles/ Rolling Stones/ Guns N Roses/ J. Geils Band/ The Eagles/The Who/ Alice Cooper/ etc(basically any classic rock, heavy metal, or the occasional Motown ^.^ I am from Detroit ya know)

And then I hear it: Whos that? By then Ive just about died. Whether or not you like any of those artists, you should have AT LEAST heard of some of them.

But see, thats just part of it. Eventually I tell them about whoever Im listening to. We start discussing musicand the topics of Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, New Found Glory and the like come up. I personally dont like them, but then again Im much different from teenagers my age (Praise the lord). However, I put up with Good Charlotte is the best band ever! and Simple Plan is awesome far too much. And even though I like some of their music, I hate it when people praise Linkin Park. Sure, theyre pretty good, but I can think of so many more bands offhand that are tons better!

Basically what Im saying is that good music no longer exists( either that or its very hard to find), and it drives me CRAZY! Ive had to resist gouging eyes out because of it!

The second thing that pisses me off is popular bands/singers remaking old songs Most covers nowadays just plainly suck. Not only that, but some are a disgrace to the original artists!

Disgraceful cover songs:

Behind Blue Eyes- Limp Bizkit (originally by The Who)
American Pie- Madonna (originally by Don McLean)
I Love Rock n Roll- Britney Spears (originally by Joan Jett)
Back In Black- Shakira (originally by AC/DC)
Sweet Child of Mine- Sheryl Crow (originally by Guns N Roses)
Hey Jude-N Sync (originally by The Beatles)

Please add to this list, because there are A LOT that are not listed here.. Excuse me while I go pukewriting those names with those songs has made me sick..

Thanks for reading this mindless rant . . . ." Whew, I need to rant more often. ^__^ Its rather helpful.

Yep yep, they do. I found that out when my step-dad was telling me about how they slow danced to that song when he was a kid (about 500 B.C. Razz) I love that song, though. There's quite a few covers I like. The Punk Goes Pop album thingie makes me laugh.

1. Good Charlotte will never be the best band ever.
2. You're right, all of those cover's suck.
3. The coolest cover I've heard is Nirvana's take on David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World".

damn Rachey that was the one I was going to mention.

thier are a few that were very well done...I guess you may think they were the originals these are so old

Mr.Tambourine Man - the Byrds (originally Bob Dylan)
My Back Pages - the Byrds (again Dylan)

let me put it this way Dylan could write some great toons but God did he suck as a singer. So his songs have been covered so often but they usually are hits where his were shits!

Vanilla Ice's cover was from Bowie, I think.

(the Queen/Bowie song Vanilla Ice ripped off is Under Pressure. Not really a cover, just theft)

Oh wow this is so funny. We watched the LSD trippin' episode of a "History of Rock" series in AP US history today (test is over, we're slackin' off till the end of the year). Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Dylan, all that good stuff. I mentioned I like a lot of Dylan's stuff.....when performed by other people. Razz

And Jinx...get used to it. I completely agree music has gone to hell, mainly (in my opinion) because of the industry. There's still great bands out there, but they're never signed because the big labels all want the next Britney or Good Charlotte to make them a bunch of cash before they can find the next one. Anything "new" or "progressive" is scary because it might not sell, and that would be bad. It's all prepackaged little acts that can dance for a month, sell a few records, then be dropped as soon as their name's out of mtv circulation for a week.

Shakira covered BACK IN BLACK?! I had no idea. Don't follow what she does. I know her performance of Dude (Looks Like a Lady) was horrifying, though. I wanted to stab myself with a spork. She sounds like a goat. And Britney had the balls to even think of touching a Joan Jett song? That's almost worse.

I've heard the Sweet Child cover. Hate it. Thing about Sweet Child is it's really an incredibly corny song, but Axl makes it work (especially live). Sheryl just amplified the cheese. The part in Big Daddy where they use her cover makes me cringe. I can think of several good covers, but no recent ones. I don't pay much attention to who's covering what these days because it's usually horrible.

There needs to be an official ban on covering Knockin' on Heavens Door. Enough already. I'll have to think about the worst covers I've ever heard....

(nice choices, by the way, Jinx Very Happy )

Oh, God........just wait for someone like Hilary Duff to cover "Catholic School Girls Rule" by Red Hot Chili Peppers.

sorry the kids in your area are musically retarded, jinx. that kind of thing happens to me too- i am often surprised when my peers don't even recognize the names of what i consider classic bands. i think most of our generation have a natural dislike of anything "old." this may stem from the constant speed and motion of our culture, or perhaps from young people's reluctance to grow old, which therefore explains their obsession with everything being "new".

damn i was going to make a topic about good covers... obviously you guys are more preoccupied with the bad ones...

but yea britney's covers suck- both "i love rock and roll" and "(i can't get no) satisfaction." (and actually, joan jett's "i love rock and roll" was a cover of the arrows). umm other bad covers... bleh i'm bad at this b/c i really love covers and of course, i'd only listen to good ones... so i can't think of any at the moment.

shakira... back in black? wh-why... WHY??????

Yeah, but you know she was copying Joan. Maybe little Brit digs chicks, too. Cool

*twitch* Britney Spears...covered.. a Rolling Stones song?!!?... X_x Oh dear god... and I thought the Shakira 'Back in Black' thing was bad..

If Hillary Duff EVER does a cover on ANYTHING, I will wait in her closet with a nice Uzi and then shoot her till she doesn't move...then I'd shoot her again, just for the hell of it.

Yep, Man Who Sold the World was a really good cover. ^_~

another thing that bothers me.. teens that say they're big Metallica fans, and when you ask them their favorite song, they say "St. Anger". Thats because they DON'T KNOW any of their other songs.. <_< My sister and I have a personal vendetta against St. Anger... we think the CD should be burned. Their older stuff was so much better.. ;___;

Rachey and DaBear, if I hadn't read your posts I would have mentioned I'm a Believer too. I remember back in 6th grade or something, someone was humming that song and I said something like "that's a cool song", so they start up with "yeah, I know! smashmouth rocks!" Uhhh, no. Smashmouth can't write music so they are forced to take someone elses and call it their own.

I was washing cars two different weekends a while ago for a school charity fund raising thingy, and for 3 straight hours I was force to listen to girls singing pop and rap playing on the radio. When I asked them if they had heard of 102.5 (local rock station) they all said "no, what'd they play?" After repeating names like AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, etc... they all give me this weird look and ask who those people are. Okay, who has never heard of Zepplin? Those people are living in a hole. After 2 hours of the second car wash I ask if I could change the radio to my station for a sec. Remember that this is a school club function. What else is the first thing that plays but The Wall. Teachers changed the station after one song. <_<

Another time on the bus in middle school all these kids are debating on the lyrics of Taxman (being waaaay off, of course) because they heard it playing on an H&R Block commercial. I join in the conversation and say how it goes, and they're all wondering how I knew the words. My sister (I love her. She knows music.) mentions that I have the song on a CD, and all the other kids ask "why would you have an H&R Block CD?" Stupid stupid kids.

Tis a sad sad world that we live in ;_;

Your teachers deprived you of Pink Floyd?!?! O...o That's just wrong. They used Taxman for an H&R Block commercial? ;__; does it get any worse?

Yes. Jon Bon Jovi physically in a battery commercial. I never even liked him much to begin with, but the haircut, Bounce, and that is just horrid. Not to mention This Left Feels Right, which....well, it just sucked, let alone the fact they were trying to cover up how they originally wrote everything to make it "cool".

Don't worry, I've been subjected to the first two episodes of History of Rock in AP US history (Beatles and LSD trip), yet Teach is refusing to let us watch "The Wild Ones" episode with Bowie as the feature artist, let alone the one after about 80s metal. BOO! But he's letting me borrow them. It's a start, but I wanna watch it in class, dammit.

Exactly. There's a lot of linkin park and britney spears fans in that class. Luckily they do like the Beatles, even if I don't. 'Least there was a bit of Stones on there. Woo. Too bad it was Altamont. Rolling eyes

why the hell would teachers not want to listen to rock from the '60s to the '80s? Amy's writting thier turning it off? how the hell old are they 12 or 92? I dont get it man. really that is quite wierd. I mean in work I change the radio stations to rock (or jazz) depending on my mood and since I run the place everyone is forced (unless they have headsets/ which are illeagal around heavy machinery) to listen to Alice and Sabath and everything else they call my death music...hahahahaha!

I think it gives a nice ambiance to the place.lol

I guess they didn't think such lyrics as "we don't need no education" and "hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone" was appropriate for a school function. Go figure.
