What a good music video for that song "One Way Ticket to Hell". Justin Hawkins makes a very disturbing looking demon. I love the way their rolling across the plains on snowmobiles. It's just a one way ticket to hell.....and BACK! |

Because the song Two Way Ticket to Hell would sound pretty lame.
I don't know why these guys aren't more popular, they bring glam rock back to the masses. |
they bring glam rock back to the masses
I was ignoring this thread until this part.
The Darkness are not "glam rock", at least not good glam rock. They're a novelty, nearly a parody of themselves, and certainly a parody of every halfway respectable strip band from 86-92. Here's the issue. That first video they did with the squid and spaceship and whatever was amusing, slightly. It's clear they were going for that cheesy, over the top drama with bad effects that the very early videos had. It's very similar to that song 1985 and the video that went with it. The only difference is, Bowling For Soup are not a "glam band" and were merely making a joke.
Jokes are fine, glam rock can't take itself too seriously. It's pretty hard to wear leopard print spandex with a straight face. BUT, there has to be some amount of seriousness in it or the point is lost. People weren't laughing with the video, they were laughing at it. All the video said was "look how stupid these videos were". The point of glam rock is to make the music a show, a good show with pretty colors, and having everyone laughing at how stupid it is is not the point.
Times have changed, and if anyone is going to bring glam "back to the masses", it won't be done by referencing glam from the past. Over the top image is completely different than blatant self mocking. They're the spinal tap with a real record deal and less entertaining.
Not all that much wrong with being a comedy band, but...they're not bringing glam to the masses, except maybe to let some numetal kids laugh at it. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

I think they just like to have fun. I don't really think they are trying to be a comedy band. These guys are a seriously good rock band, and are not just one big joke.
The only real comedic bands I can think of right now are The Bloodhound Gang, where you can't take anything of their's seriously and some of the later Offspring stuff. |

All the worse because that's what they are.
No glam fan takes them seriously. When they first came out, at least on the forum I frequent (which can't get much more oldschool glam fan), everyone was just staring going "wtf is that".
Fine, they like to have fun, but it doesn't mean they're "bringing glam to the masses" because that's not glam. It's being silly.
Revlon Red is glam. Metal Skool is comedy glam with members from Danger Kitty.
The Darkness are just Jet badly copying a different genre. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

When they first came out, I thought they were a band heavily influenced by Queen. I've never really watched the "I believe in a Thing Called Love" Video. I've only seen bits and pieces of it, so for myself, just going by the music I have recently heard from their new album. I thought they were trying to bring back the music of bands like Queen and the One Way Ticket to Hell song kind of reminds me of something ACDC would do.
So maybe they aren't glam rock. I just kind of threw it out there. So, who is glam rock then? Gary Glitter perhaps. |

Actually, yeah, Gary Glitter is glam rock, but 70s glam. 70s glam was David Bowie and T.Rex, etc.
80s glam was Poison and Faster Pussycat and RATT and Hanoi Rocks and Warrant and TUFF...
Bon Jovi and Def Leppard will now deny it, but they were in there too.
Image-wise The Darkness are closer to 70s glam with the catsuits and bad hair. Music wise, they're closer to the 80s with cheesy songs and catchy tunes. But the fact they are not like either one makes them just another Jet, who I don't like either for the same reasons. Although Jet's not a joke, just unoriginal. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |
