This thread died a while ago. However, since new people have joined, thought it would be interesting to see what people believe about classical music. Personally, I love rock and techno, but the classics are always nice. Personal favorite is Chopin and Mendelsohn.

Well? Anyone else? If so, why?

I'll give almost anything a listen. I have a pretty extensive song collection and my classic collection is a fair size. My favorite genres are generally Metal and Industrial, but I don't limit myself at all. :P

Bach is one of my favorite classic musicians. I'm a sucker for his cello suites.

I'm a fan of classic, too, but really, anything performed by an orchestra I'll probably like. :0

Orchestra music is the best. (Orc dork, what can I say?) Do you play any instruments? Bach was a genius. His inventions get pretty evil, but he really was brilliant. Same w/ Chopin. But Mozart? I think he's overrated.

Me too, heh. I always end up getting the score to movies and never, ever the soundtrack. Except for maybe Labyrinth...but that's special. :x
But Mozart? I think he's overrated.
Just remember that he played piano amazingly when he was 6 and when he was 9 he had already written two symphonies(sp?) and was touring all around Europe playing for the courts of many kings.

I think he deserves being overrated. Wink

Classical music is great if you can see a live concert.

(At my school we're trying to mix together Mozart and M.C. Hammer...we have no supervison!)

Mozart is soo rolling around is his grave right now. M.C. Hammer might just pop a cap on yo' ass. ^_^

Hmm...Maybe so, maybe so, but also remember this: Chopin wrote this incredible polanaise when he was only 7 years old. Bethoven...well, Beethoven did start a little late, but he wrote the 9th symphony completely deaf. The only real reason I don't like Mozart is because when I play the rondos and sonatas and sonatinas and blah blah blah...it's too happy. Mozart just doesn't have the soul or compassion (I think) that other composers of the same era had. Even Medellsohn had some soul, and he mimicked greatly after Mozart and other happy-pants composers.

Again, though, it's all a matter of taste.
Hm.... I've been one for piano pieces that sort of touch a certain emotion in a way.
Yeah...piano is like that.

Cellos and Violins, ftw. ^^

I can start out not liking a song, classical or not, and then once I hear a well played cello or violin I usually just fall in love with it. Moreso violins than cellos, but they're both beautiful instruments. I'd love to learn to play either.

You like celtic stuff like Enya and Lorainna McKinnitt (spelling?) or actual true celtic instrumentals? Eh, both are pretty good anyway. Razz

Celtic stuff always is fun to listen to. Impossible as hell to play, but it's amazing to listen to how fast those violinists can crank out sixteenths. Kinda disturbing, in fact.

I believe the cello is a beautiful instrument, but, like the violin, it has moments when it becomes overrated. The one symphony I was in (I quit after 3 months) had 6 cellos, 20 violins...and 2 violas. It was really, really sad. Sad

Yo-Yo Ma makes the cello look so cool though. He's the one cellist who changes my perspective on the overrated instruments.

Ah, I took band instead of orchestra when I was in middle school and I regretted it a lot because I realized I was not a fan of brass instruments, which of course is what I ended up playing (trumpet). Maybe I prefer orchestra to band simply because my ears had to hear the horror of first year band students trying to play tubas, trumpets, french horns, etc.

Wind instruments I can still stand. Who knows though, maybe if I had taken orchestra and played violin I might've hated it and liked brass instruments. hehe.
