I'm curious--who else saw and fell madly in love with this movie? It's got Best Animated Picture steamrollered for the Academy Awards this year, don't you think? Anyone got any opinions?

Aside from the Corpse Bride herself being awesome beyond all reason, because that's not an opinion, that's fact...~.^

Well...I didn't exactly fall in "love" with the movie, but I did like the general idea of it. Tim Burton is one of my all time favorite directors, like Beetleguise and others, and so naturally I did feel inclined to see the movie. I liked it. The dead seemed more lively than the living.

Though...It didn't have as much flair, I think, as the Nightmare Before Christmas...And there are waaay to many Tim Burton movie fangirls. Dear god, sometimes the emos just ruin that stuff. Black is good and everything (my fav color) but I hate their obsession with Edward Scissorhands, NBC and CB, among others. I go to look at stories and stuff, and there's like a bizzilon for just Tim Burton movies. It does ruin the Burton experience after a while.

Yeah, it kind of does. However, I don't like the movie because it's Tim Burton--I just like the movie for being the movie. It touched me deeper than NBC did--I liked NBC and everything, but CB had something that NBC didn't, to me, even if it did lack the same wacked-out flair...

Of course, that was the irony of it...^.^

It was brilliant. I loved Pastor Galswells, another fine Christopher Lee performance! I haven't seen NBC though, so I can't compare the two. I think my favorite scene is Viktor and the Bride playing the piano together. You know there were some talented people involved when two puppets actually have chemistry.

I enjoyed that both brides were likable characters. Emily was mindblowingly fantastic (her veil was incredible) in both appearance and personality, but Victoria was intensely likable as well. For a girl raised in the Victorian era, she had a lot of fire. You could actually see why Victor was so torn between them. And Victor was likable too, which was a real accomplishment.

And the ending was a complete shock, and a sad one, to boot... Sad

For such a great director with a unique style, I have to commend Burton on his success. All his movies have similar tones and color schemes that distinguish them as his work, something that is missing from a lot of directors.

However, I don't like CB at all. NBC was a somewhat novel idea, taking stop motion animation and creating this strangely enjoyable and fun film from a dark concept. But it was still rather dark, and I remember when it came out, how many people hated it (young people, mind you, who didn't care about the technical achievements or any of that). Burton was just taking his style and running with his trademark of fun dark.

Then years later, when angst and black eyeliner are all the rage, NBC becomes hugely popular because it is dark but fun. It's safe in that pop culture sorta way. Even the wimpiest of teenage brats can proudly proclaim they love NBC and feel "dark". That's not Burton's fault, and I don't hold the trendwhoring of NBC against anyone other than the bandwagon jumpers.

CB, though, is different. It falls right during the NBC craze and simply repeats the formula. Dark concept (this time made slightly darker through the dead/living thing) combined with Disney cute characters. Just another thing for kiddies to cling to and buy merchandise of. It isn't nearly as creative or unique as I expect from Burton, though I hesitate to say he's milking the success quite yet. We'll see as he moves on to new projects.

Basically, it's NBC warmed over, pulling from the lingering success.

(of course, none of this means you can't enjoy it, merely how the film ranks as a film)

It was a cute movie, but I didn't like it nearly as much as his other ones. It just wasn't as catchy. Although I did love Victor's design... (and not because it was Johhny Depp, that was a plus, but the character was just a great idea)

Mmm, I disagree. Perhaps that's what it was made to be, but I don't think that's what it comes out to be. It's obviously similar, and it's obviously not break-out-of-the-mold-with-dark-weirdness-for-the-time the way NBC was. It is cast from the same mold. However, the emotion in CB is completely different. NBC made me laugh and go "What the...?!" But Corpse Bride made me laugh and go "Oh my God..." in a completely different way.

Maybe I'm just a sap, or maybe I'm just splitting hairs. However, to me, CB is a very different movie which just happens to be clothed in the same shadowy mantle as NBC.

There's no "just happens" about it. It's a very deliberate recreation of a very similar theme and style. You don't make a huge effort like NBC and then make a second film and go "oops, they look similar...darn". Marketing 101.

I didn't get to see it myself, but I'd like to someday.

All I know is that a lot of those "punk" pre-teens from where I'm from went to see it because it was made by the "same dude who made Nightmare Before Christmas." . . . .

Not just happens from the perspective of the people who made it. I'm pretty sure you're right about that, and they were just trying to wring more money out of the public with the dark/ Goth feel. I'm talking about from my perspective--I didn't go to see the thing because it was Tim Burton, or because it was supposed to be Gothic, or because I had a spare ten bucks in my pocket I needed to burn. I just went to see it to see it, and from a watcher's point of view, it's just another movie. A good movie (to me,) but still just another movie. It happening to be like NBC is like Negima! being like Love Hina. Just because the creator was trying to bum off a past success doesn't mean I can't enjoy it if there's a good story behind that bumming. Or, to put it another way, as long as the cosmetic similarity doesn't interfere with the telling of a good story, it doesn't make a difference to me.

I'm not entirely sure that puts my point across right, but I hope it comes close.

And did I say people couldn't enjoy it? Nope.

But it doesn't change the fact it was marketed to Hot Topic kiddies, and that's the majority of people who saw it.

I wasn't overly enchanted with it.... I was largely dissappointed by the music. I was hoping for a catchy Danny Elfman soundtrack like TNBC had, but the music lacked the same hook that most Elfman songs have. I suppose I should have been tipped off that it wouldn't be great when they didn't even use it's own score in the trailer for it.

The only song that managed to catch me was Remains of the Day, possibly because that was the only one that actually had Elfman singing in it... come to think of it, that piece possibly also had the most dazzling piece of animation in the movie. Like the Skeleton Dance taken to the next level...

I dunno, the whole movie seemed to me like it was a pet project he was tinkering with at the end of the days of shooting Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Like "Well, I'm done with watching actors emote for now, I think I'll go play with my dolls."

Don't get me wrong, I love Tim Burton... it just didn't seem like he was putting as much into this movie as he could have.

Perhaps not...I dunno. For some weird reason it worked for me, but I'm starting to think it's more just because I'm a freak than it is that the movie itself is good... (shrug)

I had the ending of the movie figured out by the middle of the story.

It was extremely formulated and therefore predictable, but it was still enjoyable, as a one time thing. The animation was the best part of the movie. (But it certainly doesn't have the re-watchable quality that NBC has.)
