If you have a job, where is it at? Do you hate your boss/manager? Is it the most incredible thing you've ever done? Use this thread to talk about the the in's and out's of working.

I'll start first, I reckon.

My job is at a place called Bath Fitter. I know absolutely nothing about bathrooms, but I answer questions all day about remodeling baths. It's pretty lame but it pays the bills. I'm an Executive Assistant, which just means I shuffle papers all day and talk on the phone to annoying old people.

My General Manager loves me because she thinks I'm insane and my Branch Manager is pretty much a douchebag.

My main pet peeve is the customers. Our customers are mainly people over 65 who can't hear a damn thing on the phone and in general are just angry because they're going to die soon. Living in Florida has given me immense hatred for all people 65+.

And thus is my job.

Oh, Grimmy, you live in Florida? Sad Now I know your life must be a living hell.

Don't have a job. Too young. Three more months and I can get one. Am considering being a lifeguard, since swimming's been my forte forever, or working at Chipotle, the local burrito joint. Smile Or working at Borders, where they have a gazillion books and I get discounts because I work there.

I work in a supermarket called Scotmid. Wages aren't great, but the standards of the shop are pretty low, so you aren't really pushing yourself in any way. I work 4 nights a week, mainly helping unload deliveries and putting stuff out onto shelves. But on Saturday nights I have to help out on tills. Fuckin hate it. <_< The local area's full of jakies, junkies, chavs and decrepit old buggers. A real shite-hole.

I don't really do paid work, but...

I "work" at Girl's Inc. I went to that center for 8 years, and when I couldn't anymore, I became a volunteer to get my community service hours for school. I only need 60, but I now have well over 600.

Anyway, I basically mull around and do nothing unless I'm asked to. I pick fruit, organize files, help with the kids, sweep, change the toilet paper, fix the computers if they develop minor problems, and other stuff. It sounds like a lot, but it really isn't. 8D

In return, I get a place to hang out after school, free food and drink, high-speed internet at my disposal, and something nice to put on my resume. :3

It can be annoying, but I'm happy with it.

Well, besides FAC... :P

I work at Fuddruckers

Generally it's a pretty good place. I'm a GSR (guest-service relations... or something like that..) Basically, it's just helping the customers with stuff, like helping them set up a table for 12 or something. The number one thing that I do is just generally hang around the dining area and do some bussing. Clearing tables, etc etc. And after each major rush (lunch, supper) I usually have to refill the napkin dispensers, make sure all the salt and pepper shakers are filled up, and make sure that there are enough condiments, fill the ice in the pop machines and stuff. I have to constantly check the coffee, to make sure that there's enough made.
Every once in a while I do a few errands for the bakery. Like, help make milkshakes, serve the milkshakes to the customers and such.

Yeah, it's a pretty cool job. Really slack at some times. One thing that is super cool about it is that sometimes I get tips. Even though Fuddy's is a restaurant, it's... different. Kind of a mix between a restaurant and fast food place. There are no waiters/waitresses that help certain tables, so people usually don't leave tips. But every once in a while, there'll be someone who does. Usually it's just a measley $0.05 or something, but hey, it helps bus fares sometimes.

Actually, once, there was this one time when it was SUPER busy and this lady's son was celebrating his birthday there. She didn't call in beforehand (like people are usually supposed to, just so we can prepare and reserve a table for them) but I helped her out loads. I got some balloons for them, candles for the cake, and just helped them out lots. And when they were leaving, she left me an $8.00 tip. That was really quite generous and it made me SUUUUUPER happy.

There are four managers. One general manager: Doug. Three assistant managers: Jodie, Dan, Greg.
Doug is pretty cool I guess. He's nice and all. And.. yeah.
Jodie works in the morning for the most part, so I don't see her that often, only usually on weekends. She's alright. Kind of nice sometimes, but she can be a real bitch. I'm only on her good side because I don't see her often and when I do, I work hard. :\
Dan is pretty cool as well. He looks sort of intimidating, just by the way he looks at you. I thought he was a moron at first, but he's actually pretty nice and funny. He has a kind of odd sense of humour, but it's awesome. He's kind of creative; when it's really slow at work, he'll come into the bakery part of Fuddruckers and "create" a new type of milkshake. Like... cookiedough-peanut butter. Which turned out to be rather tasty.
Greg... somehow I'm related to him. :\ It's rather long and complicated. But... we found out that we're cousins of some sort. He's pretty cool guy. Really funny.

The people I work with are generally nice. I've only worked at Fuddruckers for like 1.5 months, so I don't know everyone too well. But it's all good. There's only one person that I CAN. NOT. STAND. He does dishes for the most part, but every once in a while, he'll come out to the dining area and clear plates from tables, just so he can go wash them. He's basically doing my job. He's just supposed to stay in the dish area where he belongs.
Today was super busy and I was cleaning off a table when a girl from the bakery asked me to go serve a milkshake to a table. So I abandoned the table for a short while and the dude comes up to me and was like "Do you have a cloth so I can wipe that table down?" And quite frankly, he did a lot to piss me off tonight, so I just looked at him and totally snapped. I was just like "Excuse me, but that's my job. I'm getting to it. Quit telling me what to do, because I already know. I just happen to be busy. You're a dish boy. Do the dishes."
Yeah. I know he doesn't sound too bad, but believe me.. he is. He walks funny too. :\

I get funky shifts sometimes that usually throw off my sleeping schedule. lol. But it's all good. I get about 20 hours/week which isn't that bad, considering that I still go to school. I still manage to fit in quite a few hours for video games and the computer ^^ It just sucks having to work almost every day of my break. And ever since I've had my job, I haven't had one weekend off. Not one.

Beside the fact that I have to pay for the internet bills and save up, I get a good deal of spending money now. ^^

Edit:

HOLY s**t! I didn't think the post would be THAT long. Waow. Long, pointless babble. Sorry! wtf... O.O;;;

Woot, zombie country. XD

And wow, Enix, I think I know your job inside and out now. ;)

And I think you should get the Border's job, Meg. It seems the most suiting of you. ^_^ Although, swimming is always nice too, but then you have that "don't let people die" weight on your shoulders. It's a bit much for me but some people like it.

school.

It is a lifetime job. No matter what, we will always be in school. Life is a classroom...For some of you, that is the worst thing to find out. Me, I think that's ok. It's good to learn.

This is some time ago, but I use to work for a company that clean shopping malls. I was a janitor or porter as they called it. It was very basic work; just have to clean whatever section of the mall you assigned to along with a few bathrooms and stock up on soap, toilet paper etc. You have to be fairly quick, as you have to time yourself every time you make your rounds. I remember once I had to go outside to clean off hardened egg splatter it was no fun and clean up a toilet spill from a clogged toilet. Weekends was nuts as there was tons of people and making a lot of messes through out the mall. I had a walky-talky on me to report suspicious stuff going on to the security guards that walk around, and they would contact me for any messes that would pop up. I also contacted the fix it people to report broken stuff that I happen to spot. It had its good days and bad. Id like the slow days where there was not many people around and so I mostly just walk round with my cleaning cart I pushed around, doing minor clean ups here and there. Their pay was close to minimum wage, but it had its perks, like finding loose change on the ground, and the garbage compacters sometimes had good stuff being thrown away. Like one time this lady from a store was throwing a way a perfectly good scooter that was worth 50 bucks and the only thing wrong with it was a missing screw/bolt or something. The lady said I could have it, as long I didnt tell anybody. I took it to my little work area where my supervisor was and showed the security guards the scooter, at first they thought it was stolen and I told them what happened and they gave me the OK to keep it. The bolt that was missing only cost 5 bucks to get and its a perfectly good scooter. It was one of them small push scooters that you can fold down. I found some of the stores just cheap and kind of mean You can find perfectly good brand new shoes and only find a bunch of left or only right shoes, and once there was a bunch of cups all broken at the handle as if they where done on purpose so nobody could get a free cup. There was very nice looking clothes in the garbage with big black felt marks run though it just so people would not get free cloths. But yah it was a ok job while it lasted, I quit after a couple of months as my hours was cut back severally and this new guy got more hours then me and I was there longer.

Quite alot of interesting jobbers here, to be honest

I work at Asda on the night-shift.. it's fun. (British Wal*Mart.. though not as big) The people there are great though some are dodgy as f**k.. I stack shelves on a constant cycle over 7 hours and 15 minutes. We have to get out the whole delivery before the morning shift gets in otherwise the dayshift managers will be all "You only had a little to do, why is it not done!?" though they have like 4 cages each at best to work. And they don't even have enough staff to work them so they just work pallettes of promotional gear and the drinks 'cause drinks are bulky and move pretty fast. I used to work on the Dayshift and I got kicked off 'cause the very cool lady (who loooved me) manager we had couldn't cope with the stress of me being late every single shift so they moved me onto nights. I'm still late every single goddamn shift but I work alot of overtime. Hopefully they won't bring it up anytime soon.
I have to walk to work, too. 20minutes of walking is a pain in the arse when you don't have a sense of urgency. Seriously. I'm too laid back to get somewhere on time. I can usually talk/joke my way out of punishment too so it's kinda a win/win deal. But yeah.. my usual aisle is the homebake aisle. Aisle 6 : ) It's a pain in the arse 'cause there's so many tins of custard/rice pudding and all the canned fruit etc. The thing about that aisle is noone wants to f**king do it. The delivery for it is ALWAYS chilling halfway down the foreign foods/canned veg/soup&oil aisles delivery and it's such a f**king pain in the arse. Noone breaks the pallettes down so we don't get our stuff until halfway through the night so it gives us about 5 hours to work on delivery... Aaaanyway yeah. I should have been fired a long time ago. 3 times, even. First I jumped into the big crusher machine. The compacter. I jumped into it to use my body's weight to push the stuff further into it to clear some room to get my own crap in. Well someone told on me and I could have got fired then, too. The next time was just for severe lateness. You're allowed 45 minutes total of lateness in a month. Well a few times I came in 30minutes late and apparently this didn't fly with management. Plus I'm a s**t worker so they didn't quite like it. Called me in and went through the process aaagggaaaiinnnn.. so boring. Anyway the last time it's happened was when I was on days too. I've not been in trouble before on nights 'cause they're all 'the boys'.. they're cool. Most are anyway.. Anyway yeah I got in trouble last time 'cause I called my boss a f**king liar when he said I'd had all my breaks and I knew I hadn't. Plus there was a bunch more lateness and some absenteeism.. meh. I'm still there. In 3 years of working there I haven't had a single bonus pay Razz 'cause if you have a disciplinary warning, you don't get a bonus for that year... so.. yeah..

Anyway that was my life. I can now die happy <3

I am a student (2nd year) at Art School, with as major Animation Techniques.

I do have a parttime job as mail(wo)man. It's fairly ok to work there. I don't have many complaints. Only problem is that the internal communication is fucked up. I mean....really fucked up. They never tell you anything and than point out your mistakes. I hate having signed letters, that makes you have to cycle all the way back to work again.... Banghead

I work for freakin shoprite with a bunch of circus people and a few tool bags to boot. But you know what, for the most part it's damn good. I got a pay raise, i'm part tiem looking to go full time so much that our district manager is trying to push it htrough for me instead of waiting. Although i work full time hours (45 hours this week)
I started out a year ago actually from this month, got promoted after four. And could get another if there's an opening for second in command of customer service manager.
My boss is all cool. She deals with the worst of customers great. Will be nice but if they bite, she'll bite back Laughing funny as hell to watch especially when the store manager comes down for it. Only thing hat sucks is the customers. I have to deal with all the scammers and we have a pervert stalking a cashier and coming in and harrassing her. So that's real fun dealing with that. And i have to listen to people complaining and girls crying because they didn't get to go block the shelves first when they got their before so and so (seriously)

It's entertaining though.
