Kevin Spacey has his moments, doesn't he?
I just realized that though I think Robert DeNeiro (ugh, total butchery of name) is an interesting guy--he lacks different roles. Like Al Pacino. He always plays the bad guy--whether it be pschotic gang lord--to murderous taxi driver--to the (and this is the one I notice he ALWAYS does) burned out CIA agent. It gets old after a while. Granted, he's cool to watch, but seriously, where's the flavah? _________________ What does it all MEAN? |

I think the best actor would have to be Hugh Laurie. I've only seen him in House, but he plays that character so well, he even has a slight New Jersey accent.
My choice for favorite actress would have to be Mariska Hargitay in Law & Order: SVU. I don't know why, I just love her in that role. _________________ 14 is forever. |

I don't know WHY I didn't say this before--but I think all of us have forgotten about Jack Nicolson. Dear god, I completely forgot what an incredible actor that guy is. I mean, yeah, Johnny Depp has moments of brilliance (but is overrated), and Geoffery Rush is no slouch, but I think that when it comes to incredible acting, Nicolson takes the cake.
...And Christian Bale. The work that guy put into playing in The Machinist is absolutely amazing. The guy lost 63 pounds. 63! Michael Rosenbaum and John Glover, both from the Smallville TV series.

These two work off each other with incredible chemistry. Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor and Glover as his father, Lionel. In the early years of the show, they're relationship was a sort of oxymoron. They were on the same side yet enemies at the same time. Billionaire father and son who absolutely despise one another but, for the sake of image, respect, strength and power, need to keep the illusion of the perfect family. This gave them such a creative angle to twist and distort this machiavellian relationship into something audiences don't get the chance to fathom very often.
Lionel, always testing Lex, claims his reasons for being such a tough father were to keep Lex on his toes and to prepare him for the world of rich, hungry, power-tripping sharks that await ahead in life when it is his turn to take on the reign of his father. It was the only way Lionel knew to raise his son. Which, in turn, only showed the absence of love and gave Lex the conscious reminder that he is on his own with everyone against him, not being able to count on his own father for help. Lionel played his father part so well that it actually worked, turning Lex into the conniving genius we all know him to be. The downside to this horrifically ingenious plan is that Lex positioned himself so well in the high society that he gains such power and influence that he will one day become the president of the United States, devouring everyone he needs to in order to make it to the top.
The two characters clash on every occasion. Lionel turned his son against him, and the world. Because of the process Lionel calls "childhood" Lex became the "villain of this story." It only crushed any hopes of salvation that his best friend, Clark Kent, and his father had the ideal relationship of a father and son, along with the relentlessly futile battles he and his father create for themselves. These days, Lionel is on the good side. After playing the shows villain for the first 4 years, he now works with Clark, trying to figure out the meaning of life and the answer to happiness and all that good stuff. While Lex Luthor has indeed taken on his fathers reign and is now the undisputed bad guy. Another element of a beautifully crafted storyline; after so long of seeing Clark and Lex as best friends alongside one another like brothers, they are now arch enemies who's abhorrence for each other is quickly becoming the legend that it is known to be, the legend it has grown into the past 70 years of Superman mythology.
I couldn't think of any two actors who could play these roles anywhere near as well as Rosenbaum and Glover can. The way they have chiseled their onscreen relationship into an intense chess match of articulate mind-games with a mixture of tough love and tougher hate, the duo can put on one of the most satisfying performances since the Crane brothers. My favorite episode, mainly because of the Lex/Lionel battle, is Shattered. In which Lex finds out a truth from his fathers past that could cripple him with prison sentences of either life or death. And while Lex was on his search for this truth, Lionel was one step ahead of him. Slowly drugging his son through all the wine bottles in the mansion to reach a breaking point that calmly surpasses Jerry McGuire getting fired in front of a crowd. In the end, Lionel tries to justify this incredibly cruel act of committing his only child, first born son into a mental institution by insanity with the gliched reasoning "it was either him or me." Lionel lets it be apparent that this isn't the way he wanted this to turn out, yet just the thought that one human being could take away the sanity of his own child is... well it's just so damn entertaining!
Screencap from that episode.

David Tennant. Definately David Tennant He's brilliant. He's fantastic in Doctor Who, and completely different in other stuuf, like Cassanova and Blackpool and Secret Smile And he's brought the life back into my all-time favourite tv-program, so yay! _________________ |
