First: which have you played?
Second, though evidence points towards Shadow being the prequel to ICO, meaning they are part of the same storyline, they can't really be compared game play wise. Is Splinter Cell better than Halo would be just as valid an argument. Both involve shooting guns, but are executed in such different fashions as to be impossible to compare objectively in the manor you are suggesting.
But, since you asked, I'm not really one for conventional puzzle platformers, and Shadow is just so different from anything else I've seen on the market lately. It is truly an epic game.

I honestly haven't played ICO, but I've seen trailers and such. A friend lent me SotC, even though I didn't ask for it. He was crazy over it. So am I, now that I've played it. I agree with Will. I loved it. Unique gameplay, interesting storyline, great battle system. And since I mostly play RPGs, it was a very nice change.
Plus, killing and eating lizards was fun. |

I wouldn't call ICO "conventional" since it was the "basis" of what other games that made it conventional. If you checked the development of games that had "similar" gameplay to it,they actually were inspired by ICO's gameplay...Games like God of War or the Ubisoft Prince of Persia series did say so in their developer diaries.
On thinking which is better is kinda pointless since they have different gameplay styles, actually "Shadow of the Colossus" was made to whet the missing elements what the ICO fans were looking for in the game.I think both games were meant to complement each other, two sides of the same coin. |

I sorta agree with John there. The games do complement each other. Both have certain feel to them, that you won't find in a standard adventure game. What Fumito Ueda had in mind for both was simplicity. Both have a very high level of artistic beauty. Honestly if you liked SotC then you owe it to yourself to buy Ico. Ico does have one of the sweetest endings I've ever seen to game. So yeah, instead of asking which is better just get both. You can find a used copy of Ico for dirt cheap. |
