Popular music is very easily accessible, but have any of you ever ventured into the lesser-known genres? There are just some things worth trying.

Heard of Bollywood?
It's India's answer to 'Hollywood'. Think Indian music+popculture+movies add it a lot of musical elements and you get Bollywood.

Now, to many the prospect of listening to Bollywood is odd and unappealing. That's why I'm here to plug a relatively unknown genre that's interesting enough to get some attention.
I have to admit it...I own several Bollywood CDs. It's so unique and fun and I was hooked from the first taste.

If you want to hear a bit or get a better perspective on this slightly humorous (at times), very fun form of music go here

I hope you guys have interesting suggestions. I'd like to see some intersting music showcased here ^_^ That was mine...your turn.

hmm i know what bollywood is, but i haven't really been exposed to it. always seemed like an interesting idea, tho.

uhh lesser-known genres... well, i'll plug ska bands any chance i get, so here i go! ska is punk-type music that uses trumpets, trombones, and saxes for melodies as well as guitars. the lyrics are usually pretty light, so it's great to listen to and just dance around and it really lightens the mood. just fun music. some good bands are catch-22, reel big fish, the hippos, save ferris, old-skool less than jake, and asob (a local band but they're just so awesome). if anyone is actually interested, i could supply a couple links with music samples and videos

hmm... that's all i can think of. genres confuse me too much. one of the more concrete ones is ska, so i know i'm safe with that one

Tuff
Danger Danger
Hanoi Rocks (doesn't count if you've only heard of them from my most recent FAC upload Wink )
Funny Money
Shotgun Messiah
Jackyl
BulletBoys
Roxx Gang
Sleeze Beez
Dangerous Toys
Bang Tango

Of the ones you can actually hear, meaning physical copies of their albums still exist somewhere (other than my closet). Um...try to look past the stupid names. Rolling eyes Most of those sites have some form of audio sample. They're the population of 80s rock bands that got stuck in the middle, often a lot better than the extremely commercial junk that ended up overly polished and prepackaged (*cough*warrant*cough*). They still have that undiscovered artist vibe (well, you could argue Bang Tango doesn't count, but none of you have ever heard of Bang Tango. Blow me.). They've all got their own unique sound, and while I can tell the difference between Warrant and Winger, most other people can't. But you can definitely tell the difference between Danger Danger and the Dangerous Toys. Very Happy

Sex, drugs, and guitar solos. I don't really know of any extremely freaky music. Hanoi is from Finland, and Michael Monroe features sax in a lot of their tunes. Meh.

There was a chick wearin' a Flogging Molly shirt in my Humanities class today. And another in a Devo one. And me in Van Halen. We were a very motley bunch.

You have? Wow, and here I thought you were such a little punk rocker. Traitor! Bang Tango doesn't surprise me as much as Bulletboys (woo, smooth up in ya...). How 'bout Buckcherry? :P

EDIT: I just made Buckcherry my 2900 post... wow....

I think it is supposed to be unknown genres, but I'm putting all the signed but unknown glam metal groups in their own genre. 'Cause there really are two different kinds (well, three, but we'll go with two). The super polished commercial stuff like Warrant and Def Leppard and Bon Jovi and then the rougher, more unique Tuff, Roxx Gang, etc. etc.

Get something by Kitaro. Listen with lights off. I'm not even sure what genre it is, there's nothing like it.

Personally, I'm pretty attached to the Swing Revival. You know, that big wave of swing and big band that hit during the 90's. Saying that, go check out Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. They're probably the best of the new-swingers.

Ska is good, check out all of BAMF's bands...

Generally I listen to rockish music, and that usually results in liking a lot of unknown bands.
Dream Theater, Tsunami Bomb, Hammerfall, Younique...
Im trying to find new bands now, Im downloading albums from X Japan, Iced Earth, Shadow Gallery, LTE and Mullmuzzler...

swing revival? that's so awesome, kfelidae! don't know too many swing bands but i am a fan of the music. i'm joining my skool's jazz band next year, and they play a lot of swing music

o hurray for tsunami bomb, chux! i have the ultimate escape and couple songs from the invasion from within ep. and i have this cover of "wise up janet weiss" from rocky horror that i'm pretty sure is by them. it's really good! weird to have a girl singing tim curry's part, but i like the change and they even do all the voices of the other characters and stuff.

and hammerfall... i know that name... o cool i have one of their songs! wonder where it came from. listening to "metal heart" right now. sounds good

Oh mah gahd...Alex likes good music...I didnt think Id ever find someone like you Very Happy
If you like Hammerfall, try Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt. 1 or Cover My Eyes. Hopefully you'll like them too.

I have Tsunami Bomb's Ultimate Escape, but nothing else unfortunately. Maybe I should try some more. Where are they from by the way? She (M) sounds English, but Im sure theyre not...
