Read this job offer at the job bank for a graphic artist.
You have to do all that stuff and go though all that schooling, and pay all that money for the schooling just for 9 dollors an hour to start. Some one can be a manager at McDonalds in the same price range, and dont have to pay a red cent for all the schooling. There was one job offer that would only pay up to 10 dollars an hour.
Here is the link:

To be a graphic artist, the pay don't seem all that great for all the stress you have to go though... |

Artists are at the bottom of the food chain because we put ourselves there. Artists are making the same wage they did 30 years ago when all other professions have gone up.
And it's entirely because artists are so eager to undercut each other and make art worthless. If everyone demanded to be paid what it's worth, there wouldn't be that problem. Instead, you've got artists willing to work for $5 an hour just to have a job and kids on the internet doing things for free, just creating a new generation of people who don't think art is a valid product. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. So true. not many appreciate good art. what do they think, that it grows on trees. Someone has to make those images with their own sweat and tears. I try real hard to draw some of my art and expect to get what I deserve.
The only thing I don't ask to be paid for is making an avatar for someone. they're so easy to do and most are just made for some other image or official art work. Paying for that doesn't seem right to me. _________________

Work in the art field is thankless, difficult, and you don't get paid squat.
People are never artists for the easy money. People are artists because we have a driving ambition to be. We *can't* do anything else and ever possibly be happy.
And as for the schooling and all the money and everything...well, sure, you could possibly teach yourself everything, sure. But when you're a professional artist you are selling a product, and that product isn't your art, its yourself. That little slip of paper you get from your school of choice marks you as a "quality" product, it indicates that you are willing to do the work. Its not a new concept, after all way back when if you wanted to be an artist you had to apprentice with someone else, after all.
*shrug* And with some areas of art you really do need to get that knowledge from somebody else, fields like animation or computer graphics that are changing and evolving constantly.
