A Story To Tell Or Just For Looks?

I chose story behind it because some of the comments I get are "Oh wow, it looks like this happened and this and this..."

beside, I like Storybook-like illustration, much more appealing to me than some random character staring blank at you in front of a white background.

I like to look at art for its beauty. I'm not superficial, but pretty art catches my eyes. When I see a story behind it, it adds even more. If I see a not so beautiful piece (yet masterfully painted, it can happen), and then I read the meaning behind it, I love it if I believe the same message the artist is portraying.

As for those anime poses staring blankly off somewhere, beautiful, yet done so many times before already! But, I have to admit, it is hard to do something new when practically everything is done in the art field.

I like seeing a mix of both, really. When drawing a character for the first time, it's easy to picture them in "do-nothing" poses, because you may be already preoccupied with just deciding on what you want them to look like.

I guess that's my curse, since I'm always drawing new and different characters every time and I don't stick around a certain type of character or creature long enough to depict it doing anything more than just "posing" for the camera.

There [i]are[/i] exceptions though.

I can tolerate utterly junky artwork as long as the message it's getting across is entertaining and worth observing. I would take a scribbly post-it note comic that Don Hertzfeldt drew with his left hand over a dime-a-dozen pretty piece any day.


This is why I love Simon Bisley... he can do really ugly art for the sake of a joke and then just switch over to gorgeous (or at least what I consider gorgeous... Simon Bisley is an accquired taste) paintings at the drop of a hat.

I always look for jokes in art, as I am not a huge fan of the 'beautiful' arts. I see a lot of perfectly CG-ed anime-art at DA, with the perfect anatomy and all. But that doesn't do anything for me. Second of all, I mostly look at comics/cartoons/doujins (and GaaXLee-thingies, but that's another story ^^) on DA. I don't care if it's sloppy drawn, for me it's important that the joke comes across.

i like the tell a story aspect a lot about 85% but looks are nice too to make it 95% and to get full 100 i need to actually like it which are pretty good odds

When it comes to my own art, I [i]wish[/i] I could make it so there was a story, but I'm such a terrible and generic artist that all I can do is "just standing there" art. D:

When it comes to looking at stuff, I like to se a mix of both. I like seeing something with a story behind it, but I'd also like it to look nice.

When it comes to my art, I'm quite a lot like Strata. I prefer to get the design for a character down in a static pose so I can easily adjust the clothing/features/ornaments, etc., then I like drawing it in more dynamic poses in other pictures "with a story behind it". But since I can't keep my attention on one character for very long, most of my art comes out to static poses.

Except for my dragons. But I've been drawing them for quite a few years now, so poses/environments for dragons aren't a problem for me. :0
