Red Hot Chili Pepers. New album. May 9th. 28 fucking tracks with a rumored 10 bonus tracks.
Oh, and FYI, I'm getting the black box edition of the album wich includes, quote: "the 28-song, two-CD set, plus a DVD with the "Dani California" video and behind-the-scenes "making of the video" footage; a one-hour band interview; a 28-page booklet; original artwork by the band; and 'special space-age discoveries.'"
I am counting down the days, people. _________________

This is one of the most highly aniticipated albums of the year. I can't see it dissapointing anyone, it's going to be a wonderful thing. |

Given that most bands write/record 20-30 songs anyway and then cut it down to 10 of the best because they're only paid for 10....most large releases are 10 good songs plus filler.
But given what nutswingers some people are, filler is all the same to them. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

actually, they condensed what was going to be three different albums released over a span of about two years into one big one
i'm actually a little worried. i don't know if they are making this their Grand Finale of what. _________________

Again, really doesn't change anything. Because aside from perhaps 15 100% quality albums out there, 10 track albums are also a couple great songs and 7 "yeah, it's good" or "...eh...." songs.
So you still don't have much more than one album. Plus fluff.
It's a nice package, don't get me wrong, but not the second coming of [s]Robert Plant[/s] Jesus. Good marketing strategy, though.
And no matter how they planned to release it, it's still the same basic concept. Write/record a whole bunch and then edit it all into releases, be it one great album or five ok albums. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

I hope this is their farewell.
Then
1. I won't have to hear them or of them anymore
2. You'll cry. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

It's not fair. chili Pepper can release all that, but Nellie McKay left her record label cause they wouldn't let her release the 28-song version of Pretty Little Head? _________________ |

Not really.
It's all about money. Bands only get paid for 10 songs, thus why most albums hover around 10 and anything over is a "bonus track", but out of 30-40 songs, most bands only have 10 good ones anyway.
But packages like what RHCP are releasing cost a lot more to produce and promote. Without guarantee that they'll sell, it's not worth it. And 28 is a lot, unless they're really small songs, it'd be a double disc. Even worse, money-wise, for small artists.
