This really belongs in the Serious Anime talk subsection.

I don't quite understand your question, but, this is how people evaluate your anime taste:

From highest to Lowest:

Ghibli Films
Philosophical works by major studios: Haibane Renmei
Action/Fantasy Series with dark setting: Hellsing
Mecha Anime
Shojo Anime
Comedy Anime
Kid Anime
Harem Anime/Maid Anime.

You said you liked the last two.

Do u mean wut makes a anime feel real? If that is it its prob coz they show many different ppl with very different personalitys and i dunno, quite a few r based on real ppl.
Plus if it has fantasy stuff or whatever, u gotta have enough information about it to make it clear and easy to understand, that can sometimes make it realistic.

I think it has to do with the way its drawn. Or how popular it is. Or how Japanesey it is. Or- I give up.

The original Japanese version of One Piece is awesome in an 'oh my god this series moves so slowly and doesn't go anywhere, but Luffy's so darn cool!' sort of way. Hard to stop watching. I think that it suffered greatly when it was brought over to the States because of the heavy editing that it went through.

The closer that you can get to the source (ie. Japanese versions, fansubs), the more 'real' an anime is going to seem. It's just not the same once it's been chewed up and spat out by 4Kids... And of course, anime for teens and adults is always going to be more highly regarded than 'kids' anime.

o_O; Kanon's a shoujo anime, not harem. Harem is basically anything by that dude who does Love Hina. *twig @ Brian*

And I don't rate anime tastes like that (but mostly because I think Ghibli is overrated). Razz I frankly don't care what someone watches so long as they keep it out of my face, y'know? :P

Anyway. I can't quite connect the whole "Hamtarou gets s**t on; what's real anime?" question. o.o; Hamtarou is still anime. Anime is anime is anime, no matter what its genre is. No such thing as "real anime", unles you're comparing "american anime" to "japanese anime". The "anime fans" you're talking about haven't quite grasped the concept of "individual interests", I see. I hate that kind of person. >O

The issue is about quality, in the same way that a Disney purist might claim that the stuff airing on Disney channel these days aren't "real" cartoons (when compared to earlier and higher-quality wok, like Gargoyles) .

In this case, they're basically saying "that stuff doesn't deserve to be called anime!", because it doesn't meet their expectations of quality, expectations which they developed by watching other (generally higher quality) anime.

Kanon's not an harem show? Sorry, those dozen girls only differenciated by their hair colors confused me

Actually, there's only about 6 or so. And one of them is actually a fox (literally).

Well, there's been a debate (actually, several) on sub vs dub, so I'm sure you already know all about that. Razz There are reasons why people prefer the sub to the dub (especially when the dub happens to be one of 4Kids'...). Razz
