In England, when your 16 you sit your GCSEs, they're supposed to be the final exams before you leave school, but you have the option to stay on for another couple years.

General Certificate of Secondary Education - you take about 10 of them in various subjects at 16, after which you can either leave school or continue to sixth form and take A levels.
GCSEs won't get you into university, but they're a guide for employers and educators as to how well you did during the compulsory years of your education.
They come in grades A* - G
EDIT - Can't answer the original question as I didn't take art. Would have liked to though. |

Thank's for the explanation! I guess it's kinda obvious that I haven't done this GCSE thing, but I did make a portfolio when I was applying for art-school. There was no anime art in it, though. I don't think I would have gotten in if there had been. In Sweden, anime/manga style art isn't really considered a real artform. My teachers always told me I had to do more "real art". Much hate on you, teachers. _________________

I was? Wow, that was lucky. In Scotland you get Standard Grades, and for my Art & Design coursework I had to prepare a portfolio containing pieces relating to Japanese culture. An excuse to draw anime, if I've ever heard one.... _________________ "You know what? My squirrel instinct tells me he's even more of a bastard than I first thought." - Gene Hunt |

You're actually allowed to do anime for your board examinations? My art teacher said that was a no-no. I'm trying to impress her, though. The last time I drew anime she told me that it was too unrealistic. |

Once I had to give my scrap book to the art teacher to have the evaluation but I forgot a few anime draws in it and after that, my teacher was trying to give me a brain wash and asked me why I loved anime so much. I was so pissed off I also told him that if he could give us a more interesting class I would get so bored.. I really love arts but the class is so booooooooooring! <_< _________________ A life with love will have some thorns but a life without love will have no rose |

GCSEs are a British qualification (not used all over Britain - Scotland and Nortehrn Ireland generally have their own). They're used in some other parts of the world in schools that follow the British education system (some Indian private schools, for example) but no, they're not a standard in the US |

O.k GCSE's are only in europe sorry to confuse everyone,
I got a C in my GCSE (gradeing scheme) Art but if i had done something boring like a bowl of fruit or a real human i would of got a A '''', how annoying is that lol anywayz i still think that is a very good grade because i didnt hand in any coursework as well (portfolio) and for an Anime painting.
(The painting was of my own characters and the theme for the final design was shields, so i did them surrounded by soldiers and they have a magical barrier around them)
It took me the full two days to complete the painting (loads of detail '') |

The problem with anime is not that it is "unrealistic", it's that it is... IN GENERAL... a terribly flat, stiff artform. Even if you're trying to get into an animation program where all you do is draw unrealistic things, anime is a BIG no-no on the portfolio.
It's not because the profs are against it, it's because 90% of it looks... well... pretty much the same. I can pretty much guarantee if you draw token cookie-cutter anime art and nothing but, no self-respecting art school will take you on.
However, if you make the effort to venture out and play with different styles, learn anatomy and composition, and develop a completely original anime~esque style that is unique to you, people will respect your art that much more.
Think Peter Chung's stuff. It's anime, but it's dynamic, flowing, well-proportioned anime. Just look at the Animatrix, all the shorts had very distinct, beautiful styles.
As one of my profs put it, "It's not that I'm against anime, just bad anime"
... Or something to that extent. |
