Yes I know what you're thinking "Oh noes... not another lame spin off from that book."
This series is absolutely fabulous. I love it. I don't like the way the CG some things, but other than that, it's a really good anime.
First the first time in a while when I character is about to die, I'm yelling at the screen for them not to die.

I'm not sure... what that is...or rather who that is. I suppose that is the author of the book, but i haven't read the book so far.
So I guess you'll have to watch it for yourself to find out whether or not it's faithful.
