New Layout On Main Site

It looks really nice and a lot more professional. Really nice. I'm kinda surprised I couldn't find a thread about it, but maybe I overlooked it. Anyway, just felt like saying it looks really good.

I saw a few screens from Lasher and all i could think to myself is "by the gods, I cannot wait to see this!"

It looks so nice, and I LOVE the color blue. It's a sad but true fact of life.

So, Denis, you did an amazing job with this. It looks really nice.

Also, it seems to be loading a lot faster, as well! ^.~ *claps*

My suggestion would be the main font used for the site. Times New Roman seems a little out of place. I think something a little softer and sans serif might work, like Arial, Verdana, or Tomaha (erm... sp??). Whatever you have used here in the forums would work nice!

I, too, LOVE the new layout and was about to make a topic about it if somebody else didn't beat me to it ;)

But, knowing me, it didn't take long for a few suggestions to come to mind:

1 - The "Add Fanwork" and "Edit Profile" buttons appear [i]even when[/i] you're not logged in to the main site. If you're not logged in when you click on one, you should get a message saying that you need to be registered and/or logged in first. I tried clicking on it and simply got the form about FAC's content policy (agree/not).

2 - In that light, how about giving the "Login" button a slightly different color? Make it more apparent when somebody's not logged in.

3 - I, too, miss the "Approval Queue". Hmm... what about putting that stat on the Add Fanwork page? Like, after the "you have submitted # pictures today . . ." part, there could also be a line saying "There are currently ### pictures pending approval from site staff".

Other than that, I notice the auto-resize threshold has been knocked down to 600 from 650.

But, I have to say again that I LOVE the new color scheme. Blue is such a [i]cool[/i] color! In both ways Very Happy

.......wow, denis man, thats one classy site. it looks pretty for my eyes. i like how it matches the forums colors, makes the forums look more in place with the site

I like the blueness of the site, but I don't like how there's no approval queue and no list of recent pictures/writing. I mean, you can still access it, but it's not right there. I kinda' liked the old layout better, but I'll get used to this, and I do like blue! Razz

Responses to some of the comments

I didn't make a thread about it because I wanted to just surprise people. Just put it up and say nothing.

AP queue went because it doesn't fit nicely in the bar at lower res, but I do like strata's idea of it on the add picture page.

The new layout shouldn't be any faster than the old one, actually it should be a little slower because its more graphics intensive...at least until you cache the UI graphics. Also, in improving the thumbnails I had to purge their cache so expect the site to run slower for a few days while the thumbnail cache gets rebuilt. Fortunately, for the last several days, FAC has been running off of 2 servers which does make a speed boost so it will probably even out for now and get faster later.

I'm not very good at choosing fonts and stuff so I'll consider this, any other suggestions in this area?

I will experiment with the buttons not appearing when not logged in or making them change message when not logged in. There may be aesthetic problems with moving them; they were very hard to make look nice.

The auto resize has to be moved to 600 to fit on the new layout. The left bar here is a bit wider and less squishable.

I will probably eventually mod the forum for more closely match it, by sticking on the header. Not yet sure how to effectively do it yet.

Yeah . . . recently when I go to check a thumbnails listing (any thumgnails listing), my modem's transfer speed goes bobbing for apples... normal transfer for 20 seconds, does nothing for 20 seconds, normal transfer again for another 20, and repeat . . . can't say for sure what the culprit is but non-cached thumbnails seem a prime suspect.

I, like some other people, don't like the fact that there is no queue. I've actually uploaded a couple of pictures almost. . . 36 hours ago, and none of them are up. That's a lot longer than I've had to wait before, and I'm curious is there are a lot of images to go through, or if they're just not going up, or what? This is the biggest issue with the lack of queue. I have to say things like this and sound like a jerk. : P Hopefully it's just been a long line and they'll be up soon.

It just looks so much more professional, clean, uplifting, etc.

In comparrison the old one was a bit too industrial T.T;; kinda dirty (never noticed 'til now)

But yeah, I'm sure we can understand it'll be kinda awkward for the next few days/weeks (finding kinks and improvements and stuff) but that's what the forums are for right?
